Motivated by the ABC series #waronwaste and my philosophical approach to art making and collection, I have started a new project called 'AKA LandFill'.
Basically; I realized that a simple and everyday object (like a take away coffee cup) is designed to be not only single-use but had no future besides becoming landfill, literally becoming part of the landscape, and the ONLY way to prevent that, or change that waste/cycle was to make it into art.
So, drawing and painting a landscape on to these cups for me is a gentle and simple way to not only talk about these issues, but reflects a long tradition of 'decorated-china' and how culture and attitudes have changed over time etcetc.
I aim to return these cups to the cafes they came from, but if they don't want it I will make it available to the general public, so stay tuned!
This one I might call "Al-luminated" 2017, collage and water based paint and ink/pen on soda-can
Finished.. ‘The Remnant’ oil on canvas, the view from my lane looking towards Fernleigh ridge, captured on a dry, smoky spring afternoon. Locally the term ‘remnant’ refers to a tiny remaining pocket of The Big Scrub rainforest that once blanketed 900 sq km of this region. Due to land clearing less than 1% of TBS remains. I don’t usually work small and was surprised this small work absorbed the best part of a week but I enjoyed every minute of it. Hope this captures my love for this place. Now it’s off for a motorcycle ride through these green, rolling hills. Happy Sunday everyone... 💚#brooklet#fernleigh#australianlandscape#fineart
