Hi 👋🏻 ✨
We had a little fright this evening and I feel I must share. ✨
Baby is loving BLW and growing in confidence every day!
On the flip side his new found confidence means that 3 times in the last 2 nights he has swallowed chunks of food that are a bit too big. ✨
Tonight he got a piece of soft pear stuck in this throat and could not clear it. ✨
Don't get me wrong, we are used to gagging and little chokes here and there. It is all part of the process! But tonight he couldn't breathe in or out, he tried to breathe several times and then he started to panic and looked to us for help ✨
Hubby jumped up and started faffing around with the highchair tray and clasps, trying to get baby out of his chair...I go 'what the fuck are you doing?' (😂) then I lean baby forward and tap his upper back firmly, maybe 10 times? I looked at his face and thought the blockage was clear but wasn't 100% sure. By this time hubby had unbuckled him so I threw baby over my shoulder and did some more firm upper back taps.
I looked at him again and he was smiling and babbling away, oblivious to my utter terror!!! ✨
What would you do if your baby choked?
*** I have discovered that both what I did and what hubby planned to do were wrong!! This is not a how-to guide, we just got lucky. Please do some research!!*** ✨
It's not just BLW, spoon feeding has risks too in 2 ways:
1. You are placing food BEHIND the gag reflex, increasing the likelihood of choking
2. Baby has to learn how to move food around their mouth and what size is ok to swallow, spoon feeding just delays this process until babies are more adept at biting big bits off.
Please don't let this put you off BLW but do learn from my mistake! ✨
Be prepared!! ✨
I have done 1st aid training before so I am right now going onto YouTube to refresh my memory. If I am still unsure I will do another first aid course through St Johns Ambulance.
Much love to you all!!✨✨✨✨✨✨🌈 ✨
***I found some great YouTube videos for anyone who has already done first aid but would like a memory refresh. I have shared them on my Facebook page - Vegan Baby Led Weaning***
