I'm writing this post as a little bit of awareness as I do see a little about it but not as much as there should be.... Well this afternoon I nearly lost my little boy while he was eating his most fave things jaffa cake little did I notice he had stuck a full sized one in his mouth and tried to swollow it whole!!! As I said I didn't notice I thought he just took a bite like he normally does because he never usually tries to eat them whole, anyways next thing he starts getting all panicked I go over to see what's wrong but he was standing there not breathing starting to turn blue and purple with his eyes all blood shot and filled with so much fear that's when I realised my beautiful little boy was nearly choking to death!!!!!! I immediately sprung into action because I did not want to loose my son not today not on my watch, so I started the back blows as fast as I could but as this point I was starting to panic thinking oh no this isn't working I need help and was about to call 999 when finally after a big back blow he took a deep breath and coughed and I managed to get the object out.... Basically if I didn't know what to do OR how to do it my little boy would not be here... I can't stress enough that all mums and dads should learn first aid or baby first aid it could save a life like it did today with my son ❤❤❤ #learnfirstaid#babyfirstaid#chokingcankill#savealife#silentandblueisdeadly#learnhowtohelp
Ok so one of my biggest fears with baby led weaning is Sophia choking. When I was pregnant I attended a British Red Cross first aid course - first aid for babies and children which covered such a scenario. Hopefully I won't require the skills I learnt but I feel happier knowing what I'd need to do in an emergency... 1) up to five back blows holding the baby as pictured then 2) up to 5 chest thrusts holding baby as pictured and if this does not clear the blockage then repeat steps 1&2. If blockage doesn't clear and baby becomes unresponsive then call 999 and commence CPR #britishredcross#firstaid#babyfirstaid#blw#babyledweaning
The dangers of children swallowing button batteries are a hot topic in our parent first aid classes.
We have done a small experiment to show what a button battery can do to a piece of ham in such a short space of time.
The results are alarming.
Button batteries are found in toys, books, weighing scales, key fobs, tea lights and many other places. Sometimes they are safely screwed in, sometimes not. Where do you keep your spare batteries? In a drawer? Or locked away?
If a button battery, (particularly one containing lithium, like the one in the experiment) is swallowed and gets stuck in the throat, oesophagus or stomach the energy from the battery can react with saliva to make the body create caustic soda. This can cause serious internal damage.
If you suspect a child has swallowed a button battery - act fast and phone 999 or go straight to A&E.
Do not make the child sick.
Do not let the child eat or drink.
Do not wait for any signs or symptoms to develop.
If you have the packaging of the battery take it with you.
THE SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF A CHILD CHOKING:
• clutching the throat
• coughing, wheezing, gagging
• difficulty in breathing, speaking or swallowing
• making a whistling or ‘crowing’ noise, or no sound at all
• blue lips, face, earlobes, fingernails
• loss of consciousness

I did an amazing Daisy First Aid parent class today, only took 2 hours of my time. I learnt so much from how to put a baby in the recovery position, how to deal with fevers, head injuries, meningitis as well as baby resuscitation & CPR and choking. EVERY parent needs to do one!! www.daisyfirstaid.com thank you so much @jennie_daisyfirstaid
This is so simple & so very important! Kids are such curious creatures & see things very differently to adults.
Almost 2500 children are admitted to hospital every year due to poisonings, with 2 year olds most at risk.
If you think a child has been exposed, contact the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 for assistance.
