Sunrise: Gossamer cobwebs of mist rise from Gastineau Channel, floating south in the early morning air flow. View from the Douglas Bridge, that connects downtown Juneau to Douglas Island (see previous post for more about the bridge and cities). The sun will rise another few degrees above the horizon, then drift west to disappear behind the Douglas Island mountains to the right by noon. A cloudless winter day, minus 5 C (23 F). Froze my fingers taking this vid.

It’s low tide: along the right side of the view, Douglas Island’s exposed tideflats show as a black shadow between the sunlit water and the snow above the high tideline. Gulls and shorebirds will be feeding here among the blue mussel-kelp beds.

Dark, weighty clouds in the distance nearly hide the mountains of Admiralty Island. Although the wind is light here, the thinly banded clouds between the dark bank and the blue sky look like they could be shaped by higher winds, probably coming down Taku Inlet. More: http://www.hansonalaska.com/

Photo: Sunrise as Mt. Juneau (3,576 ft.; 1,090) m rises straight up from sea level to tower over Douglas Bridge.

The Mt. Juneau trail is a stiff climb, with option to follow the alpine ridgeline and descend using the Perseverance Trail (13-mile round trip). Juneau & Douglas, Alaska were originally separate competing cities. Treadwell gold mine on Douglas Island, and the Alaska Juneau and Perseverance mines on the Juneau “mainland” (North American continent) were the largest hard rock gold mines in the world from the late 1880’s thru the first several decades of the 20th century.
The Douglas Bridge opened in 1980, replacing the first bridge (built in 1935. Juneau became Alaska’s state capitol in 1906. Juneau-Douglas unified into a single municipality in 1970.

We live in an age where
everything is staged
Where all we do is fake our feelings
I've been scared to put myself so out there
Time is running out, yeah
Need to let you know that...
Last night I woke the fuck up
I've realized I need you here,
as desperate as that sounds...

RP-Human Hand vs. Bear Track (Post connects to 11/15/2017 post-Brown Bear in Snow, Southeast Alaska): It’s hard to beat the track of an Alaskan brown bear (aka grizzly farther north) for making you feel insignificant in the wild. My buddy Michael compares his hand to a fore-paw track (front foot), which is about half the size of the rear paw. Claws (3-4 in.) are more rounded than the sharp claws of black bears, since brown bears use them primarily for digging and don’t climb trees much as adults (sows kick the kids up trees if threatened). This track isn’t fresh—the edges of the print aren’t crisp and sharp. It has melted over at least a day or two and frozen at night. Still… it gave Michael and me pause… “Do we really need to go this way? I don’t see any tracks coming back out.” Long ago, I asked the Alaska Department of Fish and Game when bears denned up to sleep for the winter. “Usually around November 1,” was the answer I received in the 1980’s, along with: “… but some bears can be out a lot longer.” These days, when climate change has already increased our average winter temperature 2 degrees C, I expect to see bears anytime.

For me, the REAL message of these tracks is: when there’s no snow around, you’re probably walking in bear tracks fairly often in Southeast Alaska--- you just don’t know it. Natural light. No filters.

1) Brown Bear in snow, Southeast Alaska. (See next post in my profile screen for more about bears.) Just returned from 5-days of hunting for Sitka black-tailed deer. Keep your eyes peeled when bushwhacking along deer trails in the Coastal Temperate Rainforest of the Alexander Archipelago! Like nearby Admiralty Island, Chichagof Island has a high density of brown bears, with average weights of 250 kg to 360 kg (551 to 794 lbs.). The bear was using its 2-3 inch claws to dig for roots in the wet vegetation of the open muskeg. I didn’t try to get close enough to identify the specific food, but bears eat much vegetation, especially before the go into dens for the year.
2) My friend, Mike, compares hand to bear paw print. (See next post in my profile screen for more about bears.)
3) First snow of year falling in muskeg covers Shore Pines (lodgepole pine), Sitka Alders, blueberry, and thick carpet of other herbs, mosses, shrubs. Deer can still find food here, but additional snow will soon prevent them from getting food here.
4) Green ground cover of herbs, small shrubs, and mosses is still available under even the small trees. Deer like these places for beds and food. The dense brush provides “cover” habitat, where they can hide from hunters and other predators. With high snows, this too will become inaccessible, forcing deer into the big trees of the rainforest. Mount Fairweather and the Fairweather Range from the deck of the M/V Aurora, Alaska State Ferry, as we headed west in Icy Strait toward Gustavus and Glacier Bay last week.
Mount Fairweather (4,671 meters 15,325 feet) is one of the boundary peaks between the United States and Canada. “Fair” weather here is spectacularly beautiful; storms are epic. It was named by Capt. James Cook of the British Royal Navy in 1778, but carries the far more ancient name “Tsalxhaan” of the Tlingit people.
As with other coastal mountains like Mount St. Elias (5489 m; 18,008 ft) a bit farther west along the Gulf of Alaska, it shoots skyward from sea level, with a steep vertical relief. The wall of mountains helps shape the weather of the Gulf, where storms that begin in the Aleutians rev up, so perhaps Capt. Cook had a sense of humor. More likely he was lucky enough to name it on a beautiful day.

First snow on Sitka Spruce & Sitka Alder, Chichagof Island, Alaska. Natural light. No filters. Black & White of spruce and alders is an illusion of dark trees against white snow. Temperature of 23 degrees F and winds to 40 knots that night made camping in a wall tent interesting. High winds continued for 3 more days. November is a remarkable and challenging time to experience the Coastal Temperate Rainforest.
