We love learning about the history of our surroundings in The Rocks and discovering more about our art and culture at the local @bangarradancetheatre. The dance theatre provides deeply moving performances and uniquely Australian contemporary dance and conveniently it's just around the corner, so you can start your night with us for an aperitif and meal before the show.

Cool to see a pic of @ellahavelka and I At the Opera House, Can’t believe this was 5 years ago - to dance with @bangarradancetheatre opened my eyes to the beauty of our indigenous culture. And to Dance it in New York that year was icing on the cake. Also just sayin my pic is next to Patti Smith and the National🕺😃⭐️#telstraballet #ausballet #bangarra #indigionusebeauty #connectingwithculture #shapeyourstory #thenational #pattismith

“Ochres” is a Bangarra @bangarradancetheatre production, and a four-part contemporary dance work - “yellow”, “black”, “red” and “white”- which is a portrayal of each colour of this earthy substance, its myriad of purposes and of spiritual significance to Aboriginal people. Raw ceramic materials such as kaolin and ochre have been painted on human bodies in sacred performances throughout Africa, Oceania, India, and North America. Perhaps the most well-known group of people utilising such materials are Aboriginal Australians. Bangarra, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation and one of Australia’s leading performing arts companies, applies ochres prior to their performances. “We never dance without ochre on … because that’s what we have been doing for a long time …” says Djakapurra Munyarryun of the Bangarra Dance Theatre. Stephen Page, Artistic Director of Bangarra expands upon this … “For Indigenous Australians, spirituality centres around the land. The nurturing and life-giving capacity of even our hardest terrains has been the mainstay of indigenous religious beliefs. Incorporating the earth into spiritual ceremonies is done by many tribes using various ochres … we are currently in our 28th year but our dance technique is forged from over 40,000 years of culture, embodied with contemporary movement. The company’s dancers are professionally trained, dynamic artists who represent the pinnacle of Australian dance. Each has a proud Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait islander background, from various locations across the country. Our relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are the heart of Bangarra, with our repertoire created on Country and stories gathered from respected community Elders. In all its forms and colours, ochre is essential to the life of Aboriginal communities.
