German soldiers round up the last Greek Jews in Ioannina for deportation. Approximately 1,950 Jews were living in Ioannina in April 1941. Of these, 1,870 were deported by the Germans to concentration camps on 25 March 1944, during the final months of the German occupation of Greece. Nearly all of the Jews deported from Ioannina were murdered on or shortly after 11 April 1944, when the train carrying them reached Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in German occupied Poland. Only 181 Ioannina Jews are known to have survived the war, including 112 who survived Auschwitz and 69 who fled to join the National Republican Greek League (EDES); Greece’s largest resistance movement. Approximately 164 of these survivors eventually returned to Ioannina after the end of the war.
In November 1940, Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler decided to create an SS estate around the camp creating farms for raising food, animals and fish. To implement this plan, many Poles in the area had to be forcibly driven out. There were many ponds in the area of Harmęże that was just 10 minutes south of Auschwitz Birkenau.
Testimony of Janina Perun, prisoner number 22013 we translated from the archives: "....You could see the Nazis burning the bodies of murdered people close to Birkenau in Harmense. You could smell it very easily in our sub-camp.
When the transports from Hungary were coming to Birkenau to be killed, the litter from Kanada was brought to our camp. It was the food leftovers, including dates and raisins. We were going through them and we found lots of things that could be eaten. We had to do different jobs. In separate sheds we were breeding geese and ducks. Except for chickens, geese and ducks, we also breed rabbits. When I was assigned to work with the chickens, I was responsible for 300 of them. The rabbit hutch was located in the cages that were standing in a row. There was so much work that I had to do my jobs very quickly from early morning to the evening. There was a palace in park in Harmęże, and half of it was occupied by the guards and the SS administration and the other half was occupied by the prisoners..."
In the photo, you can see the Harmeze Palace building opposite the Auschwitz Sub-Camp of Harmeze, and agricultural and SS farm close to Birkenau. (Text and pic by @auschwitz.study.group) ------------------------------------------------
