I felt like the "Cheers" theme song was playing in the background throughout our whirlwind weekend trip! ⠀
We got to spend the weekend watching my cousin who I have always been the closest to growing up get married. There were nights with so many extended family members I haven't seen in years, and we managed to squeeze in a quick couple hours to attend church where I grew before before bolting back to the airport. ⠀
It's amazing how your life can completely change with a new everyday, but how amazing it is to go back to your childhood and reconnect with dear friends and family members that make you want to belt out "SOMETIMES YOU WANNA GO...WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NA....AAAA....ME!" ⠀
And my only regret, there just wasn't more time to see so many people I love so much or spend more time with those amazing mountains and fall leaves. ⠀
But that 71 degrees over 21 had me okay with that flight home too! ⠀
“Although I deeply love oceans, deserts, and other wild landscapes, it is only mountains that beckon me with that sort of painful magnetic pull to walk deeper and deeper into their beauty.” – Victoria Erikson
Last May I stepped way outside of my comfort zone and experienced the rush and empowerment of rappelling down a 100ft canyon in Moab, Utah. I immediately knew it would be the perfect activity for a SheLift retreat. Rappelling requires teamwork, it encourages camaraderie and it provides ample heart-racing excitement. Many people think you need two hands to do rope sports like rappelling and rock climbing, but it isn’t true. With the help of a guide, you can rappel with no hands at all which is exactly why I wanted to dispel the belief that girls with one hand can’t go rappelling and show them that they CAN. And so, three months later I had recruited four inspiring young women all born with upper limb differences to take a leap of faith… on themselves, on me and on SheLift. Last month we set out to Moab for the second SheLift retreat, and I’ll let the video do the story telling from here. I’m so proud of these beautiful young women and the mentors that got them through the experience stronger and more confident than when they arrived. Major shout out to @allie_stark_wellness for coaching the girls to overcome self-limiting beliefs, @meganambrose_ for capturing our stunning memories on camera, @sarahfhubbard for lending her camp mentor talents, @emmadcalderon for being my amazing life support and @dylan.h.brown for shooting yet another captivating and beautiful film. With the help of videos like this, SheLift is going to show women of differences all over the world what they’re capable of doing and that they are NOT alone. Please, help us share the video and read the full blog recap (link is in my bio), the quotes and stories shared by these women deserve to be heard! Thank you to all of our generous sponsors and contributors for making this weekend the adventure of a lifetime. PC: @dylan.h.brown
