The parade at the end of the Sekaten festival to celebrate the birthday of the prophet Muhammed is mainly famous for masses of people tearing apart a pyramid of food in an attempt to get a blessed green bean or root. I'll share those festivities in future posts! But right before the pyramid of green beans was torn to shreds, I caught this photo of a woman praying silently, apart from the parade, under the shelter of this banyan tree. This post was inspired by Brent Luvaas's recent article "The Affective Lens," brought to my attention by @ethnodeb. I'm trying to live in the discomfort of photographing people in shared vulnerability.
