Historically, there has always been something exceptional about the land we know as Beverly Hills. The original inhabitants, the native Tongva, recognized it as an enchanted oasis in a semi-arid basin. They whimsically called it "the gathering of the waters." When the Spanish explorer Don Jose Gaspar de Portolà, during his expedition of 1769-1770, happened upon the Tongva's oasis, he recorded the locals' name for it in Spanish, El Rodeo de las Aguas. The expedition of Don Gaspar de Portolá from Mexico passed this way in route to Monterey to begin the Spanish colonization of California. Portolá and his party camped near this location on Thursday, August 3, 1769: 325 South La Cienega Boulevard between Olympic Boulevard and Gregory Way, Beverly Hills.
