Are you a winter person? I admit, of all the seasons, I tend to struggle most with enjoying winter. I love the outdoors, but when it's damp and windy and frigid, I can't bear the thought of moving out from under my down blanket! One particularly difficult winter, the most beautiful cardinal visited the tree in my front yard - his bold red color was like a burst of hope in the middle of the stark, gray landscape, and just what I needed to see.

I always was fond of the gouache painting I did of this cardinal I did last year and I had adhered it to a larger panel but then didn't know what to do with it. Sat like that for a few months. While I was supposed to be working on starting a large painting, I finished this instead. He looks like he knows a secret and he's not telling. ...
