I got pretty excited the other day: I was looking for a satellite image of the Great Icefall (Google's is overexposed...), and I discovered a few images that were taken when we where on Denali. Knowing the dates of capture, I zoomed in and found us!! Quite impressive knowing that the imaging satellites are 617 km above the earth. It's the first known image of me taken from space 😎
st image (width ~150 m): our entire group just toping Karstens Ridge. I'm the third person from the bottom (first rope with 3 person). The second and third rope (4 person each) are next to each other taking a break, while the fourth rope (top, 3 person) is about to top Karstens Ridge.
nd image (width ~150 m): camp IV at 3700 m on Karstens Ridge. It doesn't show at all, but it's steep on both side of the ridge!
rd image (width ~150 m): camp VI at 5250 m sheltered from the wind at the entrance of a crevasse.
th image (width ~300 m): the track (highlighted in red) of our crevasse slalom in the upper part of the Great Icefall. This was on the way down from the summit, and there was practically no trace left of our ascent track. We traveled at "night" and the clouds cover suddenly came down as we were taking a break in the trench on the left (where the arrow is). We then had to go through the rest of the Great Icefall in the fog, which explains the two dead ends... While it can look easy to find a route from this image, it's a totally different story once you are in this highly 3-dimensional terrain!
th image: identical as the 4th except for the highlighted track.
