The Battle of Blood River (Afrikaans: Slag van Bloedrivier; Zulu: iMpi yaseNcome) is the name given for the battle fought between 470 Voortrekkers ("Pioneers"), led by Andries Pretorius, and an estimated "10 000 to 15 000" Zulu on the bank of the Ncome River on 16 December 1838, in what is today KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Casualties amounted to over 3,000 of king Dingane's soldiers dead, including two Zulu princes competing with Prince Mpande for the Zulu throne. Three Pioneers commando members were lightly wounded, including Pretorius himself. "The year 1838 was the most difficult period for the Voortrekkers since they left the Cape Colony, till the end of the Great Trek. They were plagued by many disasters and much bloodshed before they found freedom and a safe homeland in their Republic of Natalia. This could only be achieved by crushing the power of the Zulu King, Dingane, at the greatest battle ever fought in South Africa, namely the Battle of Blood River, which took place on Sunday 16 December 1838."
In the sequel to the Battle of Blood River in January 1840, Prince Mpande finally defeated King Dingane in the Battle of Maqongqe and was subsequently crowned as new king of the Zulu by his alliance partner Andries Pretorius. After these two battles, Dingane's prime minister and commander in both the Battle of Maqongqe and the Battle of Blood River, General Ndlela, was strangled to death by Dingane for high treason. General Ndlela had been the personal protector of Prince Mpande, who after the Battles of Blood River and Maqongqe, became king and founder of the Zulu.
Вот на такую необычную красоту мы натолкнулись на пляже Police Bay😱вообще без понятия что это за озеро (или река) и почему красная вода🤔просто ещё +1 к впечатлениям от сейшельских островов🙌
The entirety of the West Maui Mountains, also known as the ‘head’ of Maui, at night under a super moon, with the Island of Lanai in the distance.
Maui is known as “the valley isle” because two volcanoes are joined by an isthmus creating a valley, seen here. From above Maui looks like a being lying in the ocean with only a head and part of a body above water. It’s said to be the demigod Maui himself.
This view is from Upcountry Maui where it actually gets cold at night as evidenced by the lens fog that I didn’t notice until after these shots. The lens fogged up and produced really cool light flares that I wouldn’t have captured otherwise.
In 1790 King Kamehameha, chased warriors into those mountains and killed them all creating a literal river of blood and dammed the water with the dead soldiers in the Iao valley. He would eventually kill all the highest chiefs and thus unite all 8 Islands under one rule.
It’s very peaceful here at night, but at one point more blood was shed on this island than almost anywhere else in the Hawaiian Island chain, in what is known as the most bitter battle of Hawaii. #westmauimountains#westmaui#maui#mauinokaoi#kingkamehameha#kamehameha#lanai#stars#night#nightphotography#nightphoto#nightforday#valleyisle#supermoon2018#supermoon#kepaniwai#battleofkepaniwai#bloodriver#isthmus#foggylens
A monument...a structure built to pay homage to any person or event..And this is how our day started yesterday....a visit to the Voortrekker Monument...being a throurough bred South African born and bred in Pretoria I have never visited the Monument before, purely because back in the the apartheid era Indians were only allowed to visit the monument on certain days..and I stand to be corrected i think it was a Tuesday only..something our children will not understand or even comprehend....Built to honour the Afrikaner and Great Trek from 1835 to 1843 ...The journey of the Voortrekkers..#history#vibesfromthepast#southafrica#apartheiddays#afrikaners#bloodriver #
Happy new year everyone! I hope you had a great start into this 2018 thing. Also hope all of you will have a rewarding year twelve months filled with plenty of time with loved ones, mindboggling adventures and a jolly good number of encounters with strangers along the way that make the journey special.
Talking about mindboggling adventures. I am currently compiling a little ‚must read‘ list of books that are filled to the rim with inspiring ideas by people who just rock. Here are three books that will make it onto that list, for sure: @annamcnuff with #pantsofperspective , @mrjamiemcdonald with #adventureman and Tim Butcher with #bloodriver . All the others are still a secret. But soon the list will be up on #theactiveamputee homepage. So watch this space.

Yesterday we took a LONG road down memory lane....South African history-a place called "Blood River" In 1838 a war took place between the Boere and the Zulus. Its a long story with many sides to it. In a nutshell 10 000 lives were taken. War is never pretty... Remember the past is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a GIFT!!! That's why it's the Present!! Here I am a Boere Meisie married to an Indian Man...What a wonderful Present I have!!!Look beyond colour people! Respect each other's ways, love each other because we are soul and not body! Our body is simply our vehicle to find absolute truth! and decide to be happy in the present! If we live in the past we will never be happy! We can only learn from it. Choose to create a happy world!! (family photos are the hardest🙈love my husband, pulling that funny face!) #history#southafrica#bloodriver#mixedcouple#lovethesoul#war1838#zulu#boere#indian#pastpresentfuture#happypresent#happyworld#absolutetruth
We started our South Africa journey with some history. Boeren history. We went to Bloedrivier to check out the battlefield of the boeren (Pretorius) against the Khoikhoi. The boeren (300 men and women) lost none, the Khoikhoi (12.000 men) lost about 3.000 men. Of course a fight of spears against weapons isn’t a fair fight. Neither is 12.000 against 300. A very interesting place where we heard a lot about the differences between black and white people in South Africa. They still seem not to be able to live together in peace.
This weekend only you can download the track “Amazim zim ayeza” from our album “Gevaarliste bende” the first ever Zulu/Afrikaans Black Metal/rap song ever created, #bloedrivier is in the past, now everybody dance!wall of death! circle pit!
