Once upon a time we lived in a small town in a big red brick farm house. Down the road from us lived the Pastor of the church we were attending. During the time that we lived and attended church there, the Pastor got very sick and had to take a leave of absence. As God would have it, in his place the church received his brother as temporary Pastor. His brother is a Pastor in South Africa. He was a very active man, and would run passed our house every day. If he saw us out he would often come trotting down the long driveway to talk for a bit. One cold day we were having a bonfire and Pastor Sparrow came running up the driveway. He stared at the bonfire then looked back at us, then back at the fire. Dan noticing his confusion said “we’re having a bonfire.” Pastor S replied, with shock in his voice, “Do you do this often?” “Yes” Dan replied. “Do others do this?” The Pastor inquired. “I believe so. Everyone I know does.” “And it’s called a what?” “A bonfire”
“Yes. Have you never seen one before?” Asked Dan.
“Well fire is used to heat or cook. And you’re doing neither. Unless you are trying to bring on global warming?” *the group chuckled* then he started back on his way.
I think of that conversation every time we have a bonfire now. So, here in Canada, sometimes we start a fire not for heat or for cooking. Sometimes we start a fire for entertainment. We gather around it, share stories, talk, laugh and feel its warm glow as the night darkens and pulls in around us. As the world darkens and the fire grows brighter we usually end up staring at it and letting the hypnotizing flicker of the flames enchant us.
There was a healing wind on the air this weekend. All three of us benefitted: family togetherness, books, chilled noses, a warm house, and lots of left-over spaghetti. After the last storm, we had downed tree limbs and brush in our city yard, so Joe cut everything up, and we hauled it out to the farm for a bonfire. We lounged, and I read a book about Dandies, Joe read one about dragons, then we argued over who had the better subject. Ha! (I somehow lost!!). My farm is where my heart lives ❤️ But we couldn’t stay. Now, it’s Monday, and if I make it through the day, I’ll be set all week. I have PT in a few hours. History: I slept through appt 1, went to appt 2, cancelled 3 & 4, then THOUGHT they cancelled last Friday. They had not, and I just didn’t show. 😞 I feel like a downed warrior. I’m humiliated and don’t even want to call and talk to the receptionist. I examined my fears, I confronted them, they won, and now I feel like I’m back at the starting line. Where has all that Xena-esque willpower gone? I just want to stay home. And I probably will. I have atrophied muscles and a desperate need help, which I was offered, but was too mentally ill to take. That’s...not cool. I also have reason to fret, after yesterday, over developing a SEID(CFS/ME) flare. I could hardly keep my eyes open after about 9:30 yesterday morning and was in bed long before 9:00 last night, then still slept past 5:00 this morning. It’s troubling. I had the characteristic sore throat and fever with it. This is a bad week for me to be bedridden, (obviously). Have I mentioned (no 😂) that we’re going to have 16 people over Thursday. I’m soooooo excited. I just CAN’T BE SICK! #spoonies#spoonie#agoraphobia#farmgirl#bonfire#cfs#cfsme#systemicexertionintolerancedisease#fibromyalgia#bridesheadrevisted#anxiety#gad#mentalillness#physicaltherapy
