I love frowning... not because I have things I need to frown about... but because of the memories this facial movement invokes. Here I felt stubborn. Recollections of being about 5 years old and not wanting have my photo taken. Sometimes a frown feels pondering. Some confusion wrapped up with intrigue. Hold another type of frown and i can feel sad - the one that rests a little higher up the forehead. Those moments I didn’t want to show emotion but had no choice... it was coming out anyway. 
Most of all.. I love how the subconscious comes through our body movements. Noticing its’ effect on my own mood and breath. Finding a way to breathe through an experience difficult to comprehend.

Cold exposure (admittedly one of the most difficult things for me to do) improves circulation, increases alertness, decreases depression, stimulates weight loss, and eases anxiety. I'm not a cold weather person AT ALL, but I make an effort from time to time to take ice baths and practice the Wim Hof method. Each time I'm amazed at how great I feel afterward! My first yoga class was Kundalini with focus on Anahata chakra 😍. It was extremely powerfull and i remember that i was amazed about the consciousness the practice  gave me and the tingly sensations from the #breathingexercises.

This quote is from a famous runner who uses it as a marathon mantra (sorry guys, I genuinely can’t remember who!) and, when I remember to use it, it really does help me when I’m a) running or b) having a panic attack 💭 The art of breathing consciously is something I’m really trying to practise daily so that when panic hits, it’s an automatic reaction to breathe from the belly instead of the gasping shallowness that sometimes takes hold. I’ve learnt a lot recently about how we can be running mindfully by focusing more on our breath in timing with our steps and it amazes me endlessly that something so simple as breathing can have such a profound impact on our mental state of wellbeing. I’m actually feeling super vulnerable this morning as I have a telephone consultation to recommence talking therapy. It’s odd how I can be so open on here with you all and yet it scares me to be on the phone and talk to someone about it in that format 🤷🏼‍♀️ Just to let you know that it’s ok to feel vulnerable, it’s ok to seek therapy, there’s no shame in that, only courage. ❤️ This turned into a somewhat rambling post, feeling very fortunate to have found a community I can be so open with! Have a brilliant Thursday.

Recently I have been talking a lot about #anxiety, #depression, and holistic methods I use to combat both without drugs or other conventional Western medicine approaches. Last year I had some pretty extreme anxiety related to going to the dentist, so I shared all of the things I used so that I could make it through the appointment. Those include: #acupuncture, #earseeds (dude, that "valium point" on the ear lives up to its name!), #passionflower extract, #yogic #breathingexercises, and #meditation. Whew, that's a lot! But let me tell you, taken together it was more effective than any benzodiazepines (and believe me I have a lot of experience using those from college and grad school) without any of the negative side effects. These kids are being taught to treat their anger issues and or emotional issues, by using mindfulness and learning  breathing exercises through yoga and meditation. I believe this would be a very beneficial adaptation to all schools, instead of giving kids pills to suppress their "add", "adhd" or emotional issues or anxiety.

As mentioned before, inversions will create calm, reduce anxiety and increase productive energy — all of which will change your mood, but also change your perspective and give you a moment to collect some clarity on any given situation.

It is important to be ale to see all sides of an idea, opinion or situation even if you disagree with most of the view points. Being able to see those perspectives can create a deeper understanding of everyone involved and form a better plan of action.

We see this a lot now a days, not only with #coffee with but medications, over prescribed #thyroid medications, #energy drinks and coffee. The common side effect is chronic hyperventilation. *
More chest than #diaphragm breathing, accessory muscle of #respiration become dominant with heaving shoulders, the chest rises rapidly, breathing is loud and faster. * 
Smooth muscles wrapped around BV spasm elevated BP and reducing blood flow to the brain. Skin is clammy with excessive moisture loss, bloating, #constipation, belching and flatulency, over heightened immune system, blocked nose and dry mouth, chest pain, rapid HR, cold extremities, frequent urination and increase in lactic acid. *
Solution: Talk to your MD about your medications if they are over stimulating. Make sure you need thyroid medications if you are on them. Taking T3 when needed is a recipe for disaster. Eliminate energy drinks as they do NOTHING for over all health…they take more away than what they give. *
Coffee: Water it down, drink espresso (less caffeine), only after a meal and no more than 1-2 day, never drink coffee past 2pm.

One of the best I've found comes from #elinesnel @academyformindfulteaching in the Netherlands, which is actually aimed at kids of all ages and focusses on the idea of acting like a frog (bear with), the animal reputed to be the king of stillness. 🐸
For now, here are some tips from breathing guru and yogi Michael Townsend Williams. Michael has an inspiring story which I'll share more of later and which led him to found @breathesync, a technology that allows to you to align your breathing with the beat of your heart and, in turn, breathe away stress.

1-Breathe in and out from the belly.
This is more energy efficient and helps to centre you.

2 -Breathe in and out through the nose.

The nose cleans the air and makes it easier to control the flow.  3-Breathe out more than you breathe in.  This triggers the body's relaxation response which lowers your heart rate and blood pressure, relaxes your muscles and helps you think more clearly.

Sometimes the accessory muscles can be doing too much of the work, and the main movers don’t do enough. This can make your breathing quicker and more shallow, which is the exact opposite of what we’d want for stress and anxiety. If you feel like it’s MORE stressful when someone tells you to “just take deep breaths”, or you have constant tension in your shoulders, neck, or chest making it difficult to get full complete breaths, then getting these muscles to relax will be extremely helpful.

Three years ago when I first met @iamunscared he was working on adapting the #Wim hofmethod to fit with #HIIT workouts, in the belief that the athletic boost you get after Wim’s fast breathing would translate into long term athletic adaptation.  I wrote about this in #whatdoesntkillus. 
It turned out through that HIIT-WHM protocols never materialized the changes we anticipated. While it works great for acute performance (for doing thing like achieving a PR) you need to train a different way to see long term adaptation. 
So I’ve spent the last two days learning Mackenzie’s new training protocols that involve on strengthening the parasympathetic nervous system and increasing CO2 tolerance to see if he’s finally cracked the code.

Three years ago when I first met @iamunscared he was working on adapting the #Wim hofmethod to fit with #HIIT workouts, in the belief that the athletic boost you get after Wim’s fast breathing would translate into long term athletic adaptation.  I wrote about this in #whatdoesntkillus. 
It turned out through that HIIT-WHM protocols never materialized the changes we anticipated. While it works great for acute performance (for doing thing like achieving a PR) you need to train a different way to see long term adaptation. 
So I’ve spent the last two days learning Mackenzie’s new training protocols that involve on strengthening the parasympathetic nervous system and increasing CO2 tolerance to see if he’s finally cracked the code.
