Promoting language & communication skills development during breakfast/meal time! 🙌🏽 Early language and communication skills are crucial for children’s success in school and beyond. Language and communication skills include the ability to understand others (i.e., receptive language) and express oneself (i.e., expressive language) using words, gestures, or facial expressions. Children who develop strong language and communication skills are more likely to arrive at school ready to learn. *** 1 They also are less likely to have difficulties learning to read and are more likely to have higher levels of achievement in school. *** 2. During the first years of life, children’s brains are developing rapidly and laying the foundation for learning. The interactions that children have with adults
influence how children develop and learn. *** 3 As a result, early childhood educators have a prime opportunity to provide children with interactions that can support children’s growth and development, particularly their language and communication skills.
As past research shows, when teachers provide children with higher levels of language stimulation during the first years of life, children have better language skills. *** 4,5 When teachers ask children questions, respond to their vocalizations, and engage in other positive talk, children learn and use more words. A study found that one third of the language interactions between teachers and children were the type that support children’s language development, while the other two-thirds included less complex language such as directions, general praise, and rhetorical questions. *** 6 Promoting more high-quality language interactions between children and adults provides children with the kinds of experiences that can foster their growth in language and communication.
Moose and Augie: When we lived in Bronxville, NY, Andy’s Dad stayed with us for a period of time while his local apartment was being renovated. Periodically a gate would be left open and Augie would happily slip out, which she loved to do. In Augie’s world, everyone was already a friend, or a potential one. I received a call in town one afternoon from a lovely gal that told me she had my “pets” in her car! Retrieved my Cell number off their ID’s... “I was driving along and saw this yellow Lab and a HUGE, beautiful Persian cat walking together along the sidewalk,” she said. “I pulled over, thinking they may be lost, opened my passenger door, and first your dog, and then your cat, happily jumped in! I’m crazy about them,” she went on. Afraid she’d be so crazy about them I wouldn’t get her whereabouts, I quickly found out where she was parked ~ several residential blocks away in our dear Village, I pull up to retrieve my wayward pets, sitting contentedly in the front seat. The astounding thing was when I approached her car, I saw she had two black labs in the back seat! “I know, “she smiled, “I couldn’t believe your cat jumped in with these guys in the back!” But that was the case! I opened her front door and the transfer to my car was quick and seamless...Moose would follow Augie to the Moon 🌙 #devotedtoeachother#wanderlust#outforawalk#cats#dog#dogs#dogandcatlove#yellowlab#persiancat#catlovesdog#walk#happypair#love#blessed#bronxville#lab#labrador#labradorretriever#cat#catsofinstagram#petstagram#dogstagram

#TBT ~ Happy birthday to my bestest college friend. She's not on IG but you should know how much I adore this bold, brilliant, brave beauty. We met in college back east only to discover we were both from The Bay Area (me, SF; her, Marin County). Oh the stories with this one. So many. I think of her & I just laugh & laugh. So proud of the woman, business mogul, wife & mummy she's become! She's my Petunia & I'm her Poof👯 (pretty sure our hangovers in this pic were pretty epic😎)
