There are a handful of staggering viewpoints from above the rim at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, but my plan was to try to get into the canyon to enjoy it from below. High meltwaters dashed that thought as the normal boat put-in became inaccessible. So we did the next best thing - whitewatering at the newly inaugurated Browns Canyon National Monument instead. We were set to have a ton of spectacular shots/videos from on the water within the canyon itself... That is, until we reached Siedel's Suckhole... Coming in just a shade slow and shallow, the churning Class IV rapid took the front left corner of our boat nearly vertical and subsequently dumped our party of 4 into the relentless, bitterly cold water. Somewhere in the frothy mess of survival as we escaped the pull of the suckhole, the camera broke its mount and went floating on its own down the river, taking proof of our awesome ordeal with it. Of all the fun we had on the day of whitewater rafting, nothing can quite match the exhilaration of that single moment - staring up at the boat about to crash over me with rushing water just beyond my ears below... And coming out on the other side of it thrilled and in fits of laughter. #SiedelsSuckhole#ThatSucked#BrownsCanyonNationalMonument#USNationalMonuments#USNPS
We spent our Saturday exploring Browns Canyon National Monument and the Greater Arkansas River Valley. I've recently been hired as a graduate researcher by the Bureau of Land Management to conduct a public participatory GIS research project to better understand how this space influences how local citizens live, work, and play. So excited! #nerdingout#brownscanyonnationalmonument#mastersthesis#uccsges
It's Friday. And a perfect day to redeem a free raft trip. Introducing one of our 2015 Christmas Giveaway Recipients, Stella Chasteen, nominated for her hard work with Compassion International. Today Stella and her friend Sabrina enjoyed a half-day float, getting soaked and stoked about the amazing Browns Canyon National Monument.
