SURRENDER OR ELSE!! Many of us when we hear the word surrender may think of the concept of giving up, hoisting up the white flag, losing to an opposing army, or getting arrested lol. 
Isvara Pranidhaha (Ish-va-ra-pra-nid-hah-na. Sanskrit tattoo in pic) which can be translated as surrender, has a totally different meaning. Instead of what might be looked upon as weakness, Isvara Pranidhaha comes from a place of strength, that of letting go, or to give up control of. It has a positive connotation and many benefits to the person who practices this type of surrender in daily life. Isnโ€™t it true that there are so many things in life that we just cannot control? What people say, think, and do, things that go โ€œwrongโ€ in our lives? Its in these instances we need to let go. In order to keep our serenity and help us to respond (and not react), yupโ€ฆ..we need to surrender. The older I get the more precious peace and serenity is. Having come to understand that these are a by product of Isvara Pranidhaha Iโ€™ve been trying to integrate this gem on and off my mat in my daily life. โ€œWorry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow,ย it empties today of its strengthโ€.ย - Corrie Ten Boom

For instanceโ€ฆ.letting go of negative beliefs about myself. AKA โ€œthe stories I tell myself.โ€ Surrendering so I can slow down and respond rather than react. Also letting go of expectations of how I want life to beโ€ฆ.my way or the highwayโ€ฆ. trusting that things are just as they should be. This helps me live in the moment and one day at a time. โ€œSurrender is the simple but profound wisdom of yielding to rather than opposing the flow of life.โ€ โ€“ Eckhart Tolle

Us Westerners may need to make a bit of a mental shift when it comes to Isvara Pranidhaha. Knowing if we do and practice it, we get closer to a sweet freedom that we may have never experienced before.

We always have excuses... "I have no time" and "Im not flexible" are 2 of the biggest excuses I hear...
As i always respond;
Flexibility comes in time, it is through the regular practice that our body becomes limber ... a beginner muscle builder isnt going to have bulging biceps before he enters the gym?  Nor will he have strength to push 100kg in a bench press... it takes time, training, routine and discipline... As for time... well if you really want to heal bad enough, if life is miserable, if illness has befallen you, if work is stressful, if you suffer anxiety, if your body is in pain, if you've exhausted other avenues....then give yourself 1 hour a week to give Yoga a go..... even try a class on-line...you don't have to go anywhere and its free!

Disclaimer: Always seek advice from a GP first before trying Yoga out to be sure it is safe for you. A real class would be better to attend so the teacher can observe you.... but failing all that... if you cant leave the house... get on youtube and try a class and do the postures carefully safely and without pushing yourself.

I am planning on launching a Youtube channel soon with short classes for those students who have asked if I have any DVD's. Full classes will be available soon after via subscription. So as a Promotional Demonstration I thought I'd record one of my own personal practices and 'fasten' it up to show the grace and beauty and rhythm a Yoga Practice can have... Many students never actually see another performing the postures so unless you are a Teacher observing the students, which is quite a privilieged position, watching bodies move through time and space can be quite fascinating. Moving the body through all its ranges of motion, as the ancient ones explored...Not only keeps the physical vehicle in good shape but through regular practice starts to free us up of emotional and mental baggage...and so much more... The physical practice of Hatha Yoga (postures), in essence was undertaken in order for the body to be open and relaxed so that one could sit for longer periods in meditation without pain. In the modern era the west uses it for exercise and keeping the physical vehicle healthy enough on all levels so as to be able to move about in our day to day busy lives and not 'break down'. Whatever your reason for doing Yoga - May it bring you good health and prosperity... May you discover the Peaceful Warrior that lives within you and may it be a useful tool that you remember to use in lifes most challenging periods.

Wonderful feedback from a male client who had never tried yoga before.

He comes from a sporting background but plagued with injuries.  So to find an 'exercise program' that is challenging yet not too taxing on the joints and body was a revelation.

When we teach yoga, especially in this kind of setting, we should teach from an inclusive position so that all students in the class can achieve. 
Yoga isn't about wrapping your legs around your head in expensive tights on a fancy matt.  That is the commercial side we are sold on instagram and this more often than not hinders those who would benefit most from moving their bodies and training their minds to be still and focussed. "Im not flexible enough/ I could never do a handstand/ im overweight".... 3 of the most popular mantras I hear when teaching first time students.

By all means wrap your legs around your head and wear what you want but remember being a more experienced yoga practitioner is like being a bigger sister or brother.  Those younger and fresher will look up to you and either feel overwhelmed and excluded from ever being as flexible and 'good' ... or you can demonstrate humility and tell them what you can't achieve, how you struggled too.... everyones bones and bodies are different... there are many postures we will never achieve... but this is the beauty... do the postures and practices that bring about the biggest change for you... its your journey!!! Journey well and be kind!

ASS TO GRASS I Performing this stretch can appear a little weird in an open gym environment, but there are so many benefits to it! Really improves my squatting range as well as giving me a nice lower back stretch and freeing up spinal tension through rotation. Saw this on @aliceliveing @lukewtraining and can ofc be performed without boxes as well depending on your ROM.

Sometimes just to sit is enough.

There's an old Buddhist saying about mediation. If you have the time, sit for twenty minutes. If you don't have time, sit for two hours.
.
Now between time for my wife, my child, and the needs of my job, sometimes meditation falls to the wayside. But man, when I make it a priority to sit in peace, just for myself, for even five or ten minutes, I never regret the time spent sitting...even if it's in the downstairs kitchen.

And sometimes, that's enough.
