Starting our morning today with breakfast in the popular Leopold Cafe which is looking rather christmassy.
Leopld Cafe is widely known for being one of the targets of the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, 10 people died and many more were injured here . Lots of people come to see the bullet holes in the walls which they have preserved as a reminder and a tribute to the terrible event.
The Cafe is also mentioned extensively in the popular novel Shantaram, which to be honest i hadnt really heard about but has just been added to my list.
I was feeling a little adventurous this morning and chose the Mutton Kheema grilled cheese, this is a breakfast special here and i am glad i did as it was seriously good.
Breakfast and coffee done and we are now off to tour the Slums.
A blown-out bunker covered in bullet holes on the shoreline of Jaffna, Sri Lanka.
I meet Robin and Kesha on KKS Beach in northern Jaffna - the road to which was only recently opened up by the government. Robin is from Jaffna, and he shows me his family home. He's ethnic Tamil and a Hindu, and he's lived here his entire life. At the beach, we talk about "bus music" and girls and his new engineering job. Somehow on the ride back to Jaffna City, we dip lightly into the past and what Jaffna was like during the war. His skin is ebony-dark, hair jet-black, and he wears an ivory-coloured Hindu emblem on his neck. The white eyes, big smile and bubbly friendliness suddenly changes when, even momentarily, he reflects: his whole life, until the war ended in 2009, had been lived under conflict. Bombs, guns, government military, LTTE (the "Tamil Tigers"), army fatigues, near-constant insecurity. In a lowered voice, he says that "times were not good" and that "there was nothing". But as quickly as he descended, his demeanor changed again into a bright, wide smile and he says, "But these days, everything is good. Everything is better." It's clear that while the recent violent history of Jaffna is worn on every corner, no one is eager to relive or remain in the past.
Lots of my brass bullet urns have been purchased as Holiday gifts this week. Been pretty busy in the Sacred Spirit Studio creating presents for my wonderful clients. 😊✨🙏🏻 I just love personalizing these gifts and seeing the flux in what different souls are drawn to. ❤️🌟
