Under California law, the perpetrator of yesterday’s mass shooting in Tehama County, California, which left six people dead including his wife, couldn’t legally own a gun, and would have been required to relinquish all of his firearms, because of a restraining order following an assault in January. A recent study co-authored by #BUSPH researchers looked at the “relinquishment gap,” at the lives saved by relinquishment laws, and how even states with the strongest gun control laws fail to effectively keep guns out of the hands of those subject to restraining orders. Obamacare, like Romneycare before it, was “conservative means to liberal ends,” a compromise that seemed like it would be palatable to both Democrats and Republicans, David Jones said at this afternoon’s launch and discussion for his new book, Exchange Politics: Opposing Obamacare in Battleground States. Jones is assistant professor of health law, policy & management, and sat down with us ahead of the event to talk about why 34 states ultimately rejected an exchange, how “repeal and replace” became a central plank in the Republican platform, and what lessons liberals wanting to resist the Trump administration’s policies will need to learn from the Tea Party. November is National Native American Heritage Month! Massachusetts has a long, rich history with indigenous tribes. Stories of victory, defeat, deceit, courage, collaboration, and heart break. And the story has not ended! The indigenous population is very much active and involved with cultural preservation, education, and much more.

This month we'll be posting about health disparities among this population and how you can get involved/learn more!

A six-week abortion ban (before most people know they’re pregnant) is being discussed in a House Judiciary Committee subcommittee today, while two weeks ago a leaked White House budget memo highlighted efforts to also significantly reduce access to contraception—even as contraception access has led to a steadily declining abortion rate across the country, both in states where abortion is more accessible and in states where restrictions make it less accessible. Two problems: 1) immigrants disproportionately live in poverty, despite often speaking multiple languages fluently; 2) the right to a medical interpreter is often ignored, with family members or unqualified bilingual hospital staff pulled in to translate, or clinicians stumbling through shaky communication. "These two social problems, if they're aligned right, can actually solve each other," says student Maria Verkin, who started Found in Translation. Conversation in the bio link 👆.

When Michael Patrick MacDonald became a community organizer, bringing together survivors of violence, addiction, and poverty together across race and neighborhood, he was able to say what he couldn't growing up under Southie's "code of silence." MacDonald's best-selling book, All Souls, chronicles his childhood in South Boston, the highest concentration of white poverty in the country, where he saw inequity, racism, the beginnings of the opioid epidemic, and the deaths of four of his eleven siblings, in what he still calls "the best place on earth." The book was this year's SPH Reads selection, and MacDonald visited this afternoon as part of the #BUSPHDiversity series to talk about community, trauma, gentrification, the tangle of race and class, and why, where there is shared pain, you can build a movement. .

Public health is sometimes accused of trying to limit individual choice (like by limiting soda sizes), but, Dean Sandro Galea argues, public health needs to also take on big-picture determinants of health (like water contamination in Flint, Michigan, where a bad choice about the health of a whole population was made over their heads, leaving little up to individual choice). Systemic bias in politics, like in epidemiology, throws off our understanding of how something—from smoking to certain genes to guns to vaccines to the Affordable Care Act—affects our health. That was the argument Daniel Fox, president emeritus of the Milbank Memorial Fund, made at this evening's Public Health Forum: Using Epidemiology to Study Policy as Well as to Inform It. Epidemiologists have learned to identify bias in research, and can and should turn those skills toward government policy—especially, Fox said, during the current political moment. Canadian healthcare can rise from mediocre to good, and the US could leapfrog every nation to have the greatest healthcare system in the world, C. David Naylor said at last night's Public Health Forum—Slow Learners: Cross-Border Lessons in Healthcare Reform. Naylor, professor of medicine and president emeritus of the University of Toronto @uoft , said even though the US and Canada share a border and a ton of culture (see: all of these famous Canadians), the two countries have failed to learn from each other's healthcare systems and have fallen to the bottom of the rankings for healthcare among high-income countries—but they could make tremendous improvements if each recognized what does and doesn't work in their own and the other's systems. Researchers at the @bostonu CTE Center have reported Aaron Hernandez, the former @patriots tight end who committed suicide during a murder trial in April, had a severe form of the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)—and Hernandez's lawyers announced a $20 million lawsuit against the Patriots for failing to protect his safety. Meanwhile, another team of researchers, including two from #BUSPH, have found participation in tackle football as a child is associated with much higher risk of problems with behavioral regulation, apathy, executive functioning, and depression than participation in late teens.
