"Life is about love." - George Daou of Daou Vineyards. Inspired by how he shared their story of how he and his brother came to this country with nothing, built an empire from scratch, and then started a winery in Paso Robles. We are proud to carry their world-class wines in our stores, a true reminder of the American dream. #daouvineyards#souloflion#cabernetsauvignon#bordeauxblend#pasorobles
2003 Chateau Musar (Bekaa Valley, Lebanon)
Chateau Musar has been making wine just north of Beirut since 1930 and is a bit of an institution among collectors. Made from varying quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignane, this is a fascinating wine with a lot of history that is delicious on its own merits.
Lebanon had been a source of wine for 30 centuries but the tradition fell out of favor in modern times. Musar was the first producer to restart making wine and now there are numerous producers.
Musar is well known for its aging potential and complexity and wines can easily age 40+ years. This 2003 is a relative baby.
The wine is medium ruby in the glass with intense aromatics. Black cherries, leather, olives and cedar aromas are harmoniously woven through the bouquet. The palate is characterized by just a hint of oak and vanilla, along with firm well-structured tannins and more ripe fruits. There are multiple levels of complexity as well as spiciness and earthiness. This does not taste like any cabernet you've ever had, nor does it taste like a Rhone. It's quite unique and a great representation of the unique terroir. At about $40-60 for back vintages Musar is a great value for those interested in a special wine.

This isn't what I was used to or expecting, I was ready for a massive Napa Cab. This was so restrained and balanced and seemingly cool climate I would have thought it was more Left Bank Bordeaux.
Dark fruit and linear acids were up front followed closely by graphite, bramble, and chocolate. The finish was long and elegant. Very nice! BOOM!
