Drawing roses is only possible for me, when I turn off the part of my brain that names things. There are no petals, hips, stamens and stems. Just different qualities of light, dark, distance and angle. Here is page 2 in my #leuchtturm1917 : a hearty hybridized shrub rose.
I want to tell you a story about this picture right here. I know it looks like a random picture to post on some photographers' Instagram. "Is that the groom? You can't see his eyes. He's looking down. Why would they share this shot?" But let me tell you why this picture is so special.
I (Melaina) was further back in this ceremony, shooting the bride's entrance when she first started down the long, curving aisle to the gazebo and her waiting groom. And there was this moment when her face changed, when her emotions began to seep through. She had been smiling at seeing all her family and friends there for her wedding, and then she had the slightest shift of her expression, where she began to tear up behind her smile. And that's when I knew she had locked eyes for the first time that day with her love.
I turned and snapped this picture of the groom. He may be looking down but not because there wasn't anything to look at in that moment. He looked down because he is the epitome of the stoic cowboy, and being overcome with emotions of seeing the love of his life walking down the aisle to marry him, he looked down to hide his tears.
Maybe this image wouldn't be considered "pin-worthy," but it's a captured moment that will live on declaring the love story of this bride and groom.
When we shoot a wedding together, I stay with the bride while Jason will go with the groom and his guys. I always look forward to seeing the images Jason comes away with since I wasn't there myself. I love that we capture all those moments before the ceremony, that we forever preserve the moments of a bride with her bridesmaids and the groom getting ready to marry his wife. And that the bride and groom can look back on these images to see what the other was doing in the moments before they said "I do."
When a bride puts on her dress and all her girls beam with love and squeals of delight...I love it. A wedding is more than just the love story of two people. It's the love story of all the people who love the bride and groom as well. And to be in the presence of such love and support? It's one of the best parts of what we do.
