Detail of Lucienne Day’s 1964 ‘Squares and Diamonds’ carpet design, just reissued as a runner by Alternative Flooring.
To celebrate the Lucienne Day Centenary year, Alternative Flooring has launched the initial two carpets of their forthcoming ‘Authentic Lucienne’ collection. Samples or lengths of ‘Squares and Diamonds’ and ‘Octagon ‘ may now be ordered online from the Alternative Flooring website.
Squares and Diamonds is a rich and complex pattern conceived on a smaller scale than Octagon. Design historian Lesley Jackson comments: ‘Although apparently simple, this design is characteristically subtle and multilayered, with each shape containing a smaller replica, and the basic pattern overlaid by larger motifs.
Squares and Diamonds was one of Lucienne Day’s designs for the Wilton Royal ‘Architects’ Nova’ collection, an advanced modern contract range. The new production is woven in the same Wilton Carpets factory in Wiltshire on original 1960s looms, continuing a great tradition of British design and manufacturing.
