Too often I see when employees start to leave their companies, the owners/leaders start to panic and HR makes sure to schedule exit interviews to find out what the heck is going on.

Well, the truth is, I conducted many exit interviews in my day and honestly, they’re pretty close to useless most of the time. I personally don’t think most people are honest when ending most relationships, personal ("It's me, not you.”) or professional ("I have a new great opportunity I just can't pass up.”).

I am not saying it is always a bad thing to get feedback from someone who has decided to leave, but I think your time and energy would be much better spent focusing on creating a culture of transparency, doing period check-ins, training supervisors on how to lead people, etc. etc.
.
If you are aware of issues as they happen — and more importantly, take steps to appropriately remedy them — then you may just find yourself not needing to conduct exit interviews at all.

💥UNNECESSARY MEETINGS💥

We're all guilty of this one to some extent. When we have an idea that we're ready to execute, it's pretty standard practice to start lining up team meetings — planning, budgetary, status updates, pre-launch, launch meetings, etc. You get the idea.
.
And before you know it, you and your staff aren't doing much more than running from meeting to meeting. It's been estimated that 15 percent of an organization's collective time is spent in meetings. That's a lot of precious time, so it's best to not only keep it to a minimum, but also use it wisely.
.
When you do meet, have a predefined purpose and agenda. By the end of each meeting, write out a simple and clear action plan for everyone to follow.
.
Consider listing a "big idea" on the plan — this is the item that absolutely has to be completed in order to move the project forward to the next stage. Then list out the tasks — keep it to five or less — that will collectively accomplish the big idea.
.
And whatever you do, keep meetings short. Long meetings are the worst.

• I watch videos of entrepreneurs or leaders that inspire me. This gets me reenergized every single time.

• I lean on my family, friends, and coworkers…and they have this amazing way of getting my head back into the game.
.
• I listen to awesome music (you might be surprised what music motivates me) 😉 and get in a killer workout.
.
• I review my long-term goals and remember why I am doing what I am doing.

Many employers only conduct performance reviews annually. So in just a one-hour meeting (or less), the manager has to cover a year's worth of employee performance plus cite specific examples, provide short- and long-term goals, offer resources, etc. It's a lot of ground to cover in a short time.

And the real clincher here is that managers can fall into the trap of looking too heavily at past behavior — and often honing in unnecessarily on negative behavior to boot. If a manager is on top of things though, the reality is that both negative and positive behaviors should have already been dealt with or acknowledged in the moment they occurred so a deep rehashing during the review can be superfluous.

So if revamping your entire review process seems overwhelming, start by focusing on the following four things:

A: An employer is obligated to provide reasonable accommodation for religious reasons. So it’s best if you can give the employee the time off, unless you can show that the accommodation would result in undue hardship for your business.

Q: If I pay non-exempt employees for their day off on a holiday, and they work 40 hours that week, do I have to pay them for overtime on the paid day off❓

A: Paid time off doesn't count towards hours worked when determining whether overtime is due. Therefore, unless you promised otherwise, the employee wouldn't be entitled to overtime under federal law.

My family and I stopped to grab a bite to eat at a well-known restaurant. We ordered our food without a problem. When the food came out, we found we were missing one item. No big deal.

After explaining the issue to the young man working the register, he called out to the kitchen to let them know what item was missing. To our shock and dismay, the manager exploded in anger, shoving the kitchen employees away from the prep line, apparently ready to make this into a one-man show.

The manager threw together the sandwich, marched up to the counter, and tossed the wrapped sandwich down onto the counter. He then abruptly turned on his heel and marched out of sight without a word. It was awkward and excessively aggressive to say the least.

Management must take this all in stride. Employees are looking to the restaurant's leadership team to help them navigate these inevitable hiccups, so managers need to be able to let the stress literally just roll off their shoulders. If they lash out at the employees, or customers, they're setting an extremely poor example. These things tend to snowball too, infiltrating the entire establishment as an acceptable way to interact and behave.
