Hazy summer sunset from Little Jerusalem Island on Ross Lake during a 3 day canoe/camping trip this summer. The weather was perfect, but the smoke from the fires up north in Canada restricted visibility. Although, we didn't have the views of the surrounding mountains I was hoping for, we were treated to phenomenal sunsets and a blood orange full moon during the night. #canoe#camping#rosslake

Just sick 📷 by @outofthewoods - This photo was a labor of love! I absolutely loved this scene but to capture it wasn't as easy as taking one photo. It was really dark where my camera was set up, the rocks around me were very dark, to get the sky exposed properly meant the rock was straight black, and vice versa, if I exposed for the rock, the sky was white as snow. I see a lot of photos on IG with blown out skies, I know it's kinda popular right now, but I personally don't care for it much. I like capturing more like what my eyes saw in that particular scene. So here's how I made this one. .
- I took 4 photos of different exposures, one for the rocks around me, one for the stack ahead of me, one for the sky and one for the water. .
- I then used the hdr function built into lightroom to blend them, and it did a pretty good job, but not perfect. .
- I then brought the photo into photoshop. Here I fixed a bunch of spots where the merge of the different exposures wasn't quite clean enough. I spent a bunch of time with the clone stamp tool cleaning the rock (where I had a nasty sun flare at) and also fixing the water in the foreground, where the auto blend hadn't quite got it right. .
- the final step was to bring it back to lightroom where I did some final sharpening, Dodge and burning, and color correction.
Overall I'm very pleased with how it came out, and I hope you enjoy it as well! I will be posting on my story the photos I took that lead up to this final image. If you have any questions please feel free to ask!
