Behind the scenes: I took this picture when I went to visit the long neck tribe near chiang mai. Without having done much research initially, I though that visiting such a different sub culture would be an amazing experience. However, it was nothing but dissapointment. Firslty, when getting there, you quickly realize that these women are kept within a closed premises, closed off by a wooden fence. Upon entry, an outrageous fee is asked from people to "help maintain the long neck tribe people". However once upon entry we quickly realized that it was no true. The long neck tribe women are kept in captivity by the tourism industry that feed off from their profits. It was clear as soon as I stepped inside that this is just a form of human exploitation.
It might not seem like it but this is Modern slavery. I know they smile and look happy there but thats not whats behind this human circus.
Human trafficking is a huge issue with the Long Neck Karen. They are often kept against their will for the purpose of making money off of tourism. Tourists need to exercise caution when visiting places that want to sell a cultural experience.
All of this is to say, that I wish I had done more research before heading off to such a place.
As tourists, I feel that it is our responsibility to understand that we support industries like this with our interest and dollar. If more people knew about this human trafficking, I doubt that these women would still be captivated and exploited.
Let's just be conscious travelers 🌈
