Happy Windy City Wednesday! 🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭 Today I will be talking about Chicago Style Hotdogs!
Also known as "Depression Dogs" because they were made popular in Chicago around The Great Depression where a hotdog only cost a nickel.. it can be easily served in baseball parks & street markets, and is said to consist of many cultures mixed together to create such a beautifully constructed meal (German Franks, Jewish kosher, Italian toppings.. but this dog is 100% American)
It consists of a red hot, cushioned in between a poppy seed bun, and it is decorated with chopped onion, sweet relish, tomato slices, a pickle wedge, sport peppers, mustard, and topped off with celery salt.
It's a great combination of soft to crunchy, from hot to cold, meat to veggie, and everything in between.
If you're looking for the best dogs in Chicago, Portillo's Hotdogs is probably your best bet, I also really LOVE Super Dawgs (served with green tomatoes & has a smokey dog flavor), or if you enjoy a good char-dog with service that will put your ego in check, id check out The Weiner Circle in the Lakeview neighborhood... while you're there, get yourself a famous $20 "chocolate milkshake"
It's true what they say,
You are what you eat.
Take it from me,
A real Chicago Hotdog.
