Love to discover new emerging artists and this year I think it's @lyleashtonharris as this piece is immensely powerful and thought provoking with it's blood red patina over the unbendable metal to maybe represent the endless bloodshed within a community? Strong symbolism with the ring of thorns like Jesus was sacrificed with, to the binding handcuffs and the tattoo of urban lingo but that can be interpreted to mean 2 very different statements. Brilliant and I guess that's why the Whitney has bought 15 of his pieces very recently. Proud and happy for @lyleashtonharris! #chicagoexpo#maruanimercier#creativeminds#artiststruggles#blacklivesmatter#chicagoart#chicagoculture#expochicago#expo2017
I make this face every time I step on the train or bus. There's always something gross happening; someone is masturbating across from you, someone is eating food that smells like a dead body, a homeless person is peeing next to you, someone is puking on the train, etc. This story is about the man who has taken the #1 trophy prize of grossest CTA rider that I've ever encountered. Read about it on yungmiga.com/theblog !!
Midwesterners are supposed to be these super welcoming and kind people. Having grown up in the city of Chicago my whole life I didn't think that stereotype was true... until I visited the Twin Cities in Minnesota for a writing conference. Read about my strange encounters on yungmiga.com/theblog !!
The excitement is real 🙈I've never ridden inside a manually operated elevator until I discovered the Fine Arts Building 🙊!! This is probably the only building in Chicago that still has two working manually operating elevators!! What an experience, there are no "doors" so you're literally in a boxed cart moving between floors and it bounces up and down every time it stops (they say it "thuds"- whatever, just don't get nauseas.) I'm not going to lie, I was scared the first time it stopped. This building was built in 1884 and the woodwork and elevators are original- could you imagine?!?!? It's stood the test of time for 133 years!! Today this building is the home to many artists, art galleries, dance and theater studios, recording studios, interior design firms, musical instrument makers, and many other businesses associated with the arts. If you haven't had a chance to check it out, please do! I promise it's a once in a lifetime experience!! #PureHappiness

In honor of Fred Hampton's birthday, I present Solidarity.
If I think I'm better than you and you think you're better than me, then
how will we ever become united and almighty?
This isn't about popularity.
We were all once royalty.
What happened to loyalty?
Where is the solidarity ?
Too many of us face the penalty, living in poverty.
We barely own our own properties. How did we allow this to become our reality?
This can't be our destiny !
Are we too preoccupied to see that this cannot be justified?
It used to take a village to raise a child, how did we allow thits to be nullified?
Black people we must become solidified.
We're too complacent and pacified.
Not nationwide but worldwide.
There's no way we can be satisfied.
Are we too petrified, to testify, and modify?
We all derived from one origin.
So how did we end up living in a margin?
If I advance and move forward in life, I leave my brothers and sisters behind.
It's no wonder why the rest of mankind doesn't feel inclined to help our own kind.
We can't keep using race as an excuse.
There is a bigger issue at hand and it can no longer be eschewed.
So I'll ask again where is the solidarity?
Do we not know our worth ?
We were kings and queens from birth.
Where is the pride?
Why did we allow it to die?
Why did we allow someone else from outside to guide, then strip us of our rights.
Why did we abide?
Why didn't we deny?
It's not because we aren't fortified rather it's because we aren't unified.
So I'll ask one last time, where is the solidarity? #thestreetjournalist#unorthodoxcitizen#poetry#chicagoculture#chicagoartist#southsidechicago#fredhampton#lentertainment#media#solidarity#art#writer#humanitarian#philanthropy#unity#journalism culture #diversity#blackart#blackculture#alllivesmatter#positivity#higherconsciousness#inspiration#influencer#spokenword#spokenwordpoetry#spreadingknowledge#keepingitreal#theunorthodoxway
