I thought long and hard about posting this. My youngest daughter has my genes and has learnt her eating habits and relationship with food from me. Thanks @wellnessmama for clarifying this for me this week by reminding me that I am “the CEO of my children’s health”. Abigail has had a battle the last few years where she has struggled with bullying at school and generally feeling sad due to friends leaving (we are expats) and has turned to food for comfort. She is a twin - so the study of nutrigenetics is live and well in our house - she reacts very differently to food than her twin brother who burns it off faster than I can put it in!- Now I’ve been asked if I fed her too much as a baby.... but you know what - they were both weaned in the same way - with the same foods - their environment has been the same... yet their bodies metabolise this food in very different ways. So that’s my first observation on bio-individuality. But if you look at her relationship with food as emotional comfort - well I hold my hands up! That is a learned behaviour from me. And something that I have changed for myself over the last 18 months and we have worked together to help change this for her. I am fully responsible for her health. I am working on providing healthy, portion controlled food without a feeling of deprivation... without a “diet”. As you all know - I am not about “diets”. And we are very active... cycling, swimming and netball. Teaching her to enjoy physical activity and its importance to her health. These photos are taken 3 months apart and 4kg less in the one on the right. I feel like we are winning - as the CEO of her health I am running an efficient business. I feel like transforming my own health and studying to be a healthcoach with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition has  given me the training I needed to deliver results as the CEO of this household. Although we are all susceptible to subjecting ourselves to the crippling self-criticism that stems from 'failing' to flaunt a 'flawless' figure, our preoccupation with portraying society's perception of perfection can sabotage more than just our silhouette. 
In fact, something as simple as screaming at the scales and/or religiously reiterating that we're repulsed by our 'revolting' reflection can not only trigger belittling behaviour in our tot - the innocent but influential mind of a minor often mimics mum's (and dad's!) mannerisms - but force our offspring to follow in the same self-sabotaging footsteps as they approach adolescence and adulthood - children who perceive their paranoid parent's abnormal actions towards their figure (and food) as acceptable are at an increased risk of developing a distorted definition of dieting, and a persistent preoccupation with their ('imperfect') physique. 
Instead of fixating on your 'fuller' figure and/or skipping substantial snacks and meals in an attempt to shape the slender silhouette that society says you 'should' strive for, focus on shielding your youngster from toxic thoughts of body negativity by banishing your belittling behaviour, and bombarding their brain with the belief that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Although society's perception of 'perfection' may pressure them (and you!) to resemble a skeletal bag of bones, it's how you and your youngster feel on the inside - healthy, happy, confident and comfortable in your own skin - that matters the most. 
Final thought: children are like a curious sponge, they learn from listening, watching and copying their carers, whilst acknowledging and absorbing the actions of the adults around them - this includes how they treat and talk about their body, as well as whether they choose self-acceptance, over self-sabotage.

Although many minors are starting their day with a bowl of breakfast cereal, this favoured (and often overeaten) food source commonly contains a substantial amount of salt and/or sugar per portion - the latter largely linked to obesity, dental decay and type 2 diabetes. 
In order to highlight how much one standard 30g serving of cereal can contain, we’re taking a closer look at five of kids favourites... 1.Frosties: although tots’ may be tempted by the talking tiger, the frosted flakes that he promotes are far from ‘great’ - particularly when they contain a staggering 11g of the sweet stuff and 0.25g of salt per serving. 
2.Chocolate coco pops: coco and friends may claim to make breakfast time more fun, but they also make morning meals far sweeter than they should be - this chocolatey concoction contains a colossal 9.0g of sugar and 0.23g of salt per serving. 
3.Crunchy nut cornflakes: nuts may well make nutritious nibbles, but not when they’re coated in honey - this crunchy corn and nut combo contains a shocking 11g of sugar and 0.23g of salt per serving.

4.Kellogg’s Krave milk chocolate cereal: although these chocolate filled favourites may tickle our tot’s taste buds, they also contain 8.4g of sugar and 0.29g of salt per serving making them a far from sensible way to start the day. 
5.Nestle cookie crisp: with its chocolate based biscuits and captivating character, it should come as no surprise that this child targeted breakfast cereal is bursting with 8.0g of sugar and 0.23g of salt per serving. 
Final thought: although wholewheat cereals such as weetabix (sweetened with age appropriate milk and/or fruit) can create a beneficial breakfast, it’s important to ensure that an infant’s daily salt and sugar intake doesn’t exceed recommendations.

Joseph Vivens came to talk about his book mini series, Chunky and Friends, created to help parents jump start the conversation with their kids about the importance of healthy eating and active play.  The current adult obesity rate, just updated by U.S. government researchers, stands at a record 39.8%. The rate in children and teens is 18.5%. Ashley and I met almost a decade and a half ago in Weight Watchers - when we were both way too goddamn young to be there. Most adolescent and teenage girls worry about boys, hair, and makeup, while her and I worried about things like whether we would fit in the desk we were assigned at school or questioning whether or not we would live to see the next day. 
I moved away, lost 100 pounds, and didn’t see her again for years. Until one day after I moved back and she came in to the salon to have me cut her hair. It wasn’t until years later that she told me she would never forget me because she was so afraid and embarrassed to have her hair cut - and “I treated her like a normal person and made her feel beautiful”. I cried, because nobody should ever have to feel GRATEFUL that another human treated them with basic kindness because they were so used to being treated poorly because of their appearance. 
Over the years, Ashley and I continued our battle with obesity. 1000 times she reached out to me, and 1000 times I reached back with love. Few people will ever understand where I’ve been, but she did. And every time we spoke, I saw myself in her. 
Yesterday I fit in to a pair of size 5 jeans, for the first time in my entire life. And yesterday, at the age of 25, Ashley’s body gave out and she passed away. 
I did not know her well, our in person conversations were only a handful. But the two of us knew the most broken, vulnerable parts of each other in a way that nobody else could possibly understand. She was the kindest, sweetest soul and her passing has impacted me in a way that words can not even adequately express. 
Be kind; we never truly know the demons others are fighting. Spread love; because this world can never have enough. Love yourself; because at the end of the day that’s all we truly have. And if you have a spare moment to send positive vibes and prayers to all who loved this beautiful girl, I would be so grateful. 
Fly high, sweet girl. I’ll never forget you or the part YOU played in MY journey. 🖤✊🏽

Poor diet is now the greatest threat to health and well-being in the UK. Government guidance suggests we should be eating seven portions of fruit and veg a day. But a recent study by the Food Foundation showed that 95.5% of children aged 11-16 aren’t eating enough vegetables.

And with only 1.2% of food and soft drink advertising being spent on promoting vegetables to children, it’s not surprising kids find other, less healthy options so tempting.

This is simply due to the fact that low calorie food (and fluid!) sources can still contain a substantial amount of salt, sugar and/or saturated fat per serving (think the 89 calories and 15g of sugar found in six wine gum sweets and the 45 calories and 2.3g of saturated fat found in a ‘kid friendly’ creamy cheese triangle), and resembles a root reason why we should be focusing on promoting a positive relationship with food (and what beneficial nutrients certain sources contain), as opposed to teaching tots’ to fixate on figures by banning them from specific food sources simply because we’re told that they contain too many calories for children to consume.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY AND JUNK FOOD ADVERTISING DISCUSSED IN WESTMINSTER HALL DEBATE

The growing problem of junk food advertising and its effect on childhood obesity was one of several issues discussed in a Westminster Hall debate attended by Reading East MP Matt Rodda.

Various health studies have shown the impact of junk food advertising on the rise in childhood obesity. Children are 'bombarded' with television advertisements during prime-time television shows and at viewing times where the audience is predominantly child-specific. Studies by Liverpool University have highlighted instances of up to 12 advertisements per hour are being shown during prime-time periods where children are part of that viewing audience.

Taking part in the debate, Matt said:
“The effect of diet on children's health is a serious and substantial problem facing our country. If unchecked, poor diet could undermine the health of millions of children; and I believe it risks setting back the historic advances made in children's health in recent decades, including since World War 2. Child ill-health is such a significant problem that it is notable in my constituency where there is a higher than average rate of child obesity and there are also significant differences in life expectancy between different parts of the constituency - and that's in a relatively typical town in the south-east of England.” “There are also a series of other issues related to health inequality; there's been a growth in the consumption of unhealthy food, and I want to raise the challenges faced in particular by families who are struggling with this issue. So this imagine haunts me! I had my appendix removed at the age of 11 and the weight started to pile on from there. I was the kid called fat, bullied because of my weight and told frequently from even close family members that I was ugly and gross because of it! Never once did they mention how horrible it was for my health only that I looked bad and I was unattractive. (I don't think children should have to worry about being attractive but hey what do I know) to those of you who called me names and tortured my feeling when I was young...I hope your fat kids are not made to feel like a piece of shit they way you cut into me daily!! Today I got tears in my eyes when I realised my lifestyle choices are becoming my child’s lifestyle choices also! 
I wasn’t always fit and healthy, I was an overweight child/teen who was self conscious, hid in baggy clothes and suffered with bad acne. 
I try to set a good example for my kids, encourage them to make good food choices, to live a healthy lifestyle which means activities as well as Xbox 🙄. I don’t dictate (well not all the time 🙈) I let them choose for themselves, this sets them up to be healthy adults. 
They have treats, they have veggies. They play ball and they have ipad time. Everything in moderation.

As the percentage of overweight and obese primary school leavers continues to rise, with increasing awareness of the equally troubling figures regarding pre and Type II diabetes in this age group, the UK government has issued this new guideline. But is this truly the answer we’re looking for 🤔.

Optimal childhood #nutrition is something I am exceptionally passionate about, and in my opinion this falls far short as I believe educating our children about #healthyeatinghabits is far more powerful, and offers a long term fix, when compared to #caloriecounting 💛 My considerations would be as follows:

{PICKY EATERS}
Children have naturally sweeter tastes however if savoury foods are introduced earlier the palate will adjust. You are also far more likely to have success before a child becomes mobile as then they become wary of new foods due to an innate protective mechanism that would have guarded them way back when we foraged for food 🌿 this will then revert back to increased inquisitiveness around 5 years of age.

Encourage children to be involved, let them pick and try things with you, smell fresh herbs and introduce as many new flavours as possible. Take them shopping if you can and allow them to choose something new they’d like to try (fresh produce only!) 🥒🍐🥑 Avoid making meals a battleground however, if they don’t want something don’t shout, just leave it there and lead by example, they may come round to it later 👌🏻.

The idea of ‘feeding up’ children runs deep - from the moment you bring home a newborn you will keep note of the weight they are gaining, being encouraged that bigger is better. Yes absolutely you don’t want a baby losing weight, but also be mindful to make meals in proportion with their needs. Carbohydrates equal to their fist, protein their own palm and 2-3 handfuls of vegetables are easy guidelines 🍽.

{HUNGRY, THIRSTY OR NOISY?}
Approximately 50% of the time a child tells you they’re hungry they’re actually thirsty so first up always make sure they’re drinking plenty of fresh water (cooled herbal teas are also great and make a far superior choice to juice) 🌱.

Have healthy meals prepared ahead of time or have quick options at home like whole grain turkey sandwiches, microwaveable/oven ready vegan or healthy meals. -Eat every 2-3 hours and consume enough protein 20-25g per meal & snack. Eat 5-6 times a day small portions. Ok had a good giggle?  Now let’s talk childhood obesity.  This is me aged 10 modelling my school PE t shirt feeling super insecure because even the largest t shirt was tight. Sure to my parents I looked cute and cuddly but to my school mates and other kids around me I was the “fat one”, slow one”, “the one not to pick on their team for class races”. You see within my home I was loved and in my culture a big part of that love is being fed unlimited amounts of your favourite foods. I now know the satisfaction mothers get when their child clears the plate because as a mum you feel calmer knowing your child is full. However, we often overlook the damage this is doing long term because that child adapts to big portions of hearty meals with the constant need to finish everything on their plate inevitably leading to more weight gain over time. 
I spent a very long time thinking that I had no control over the way my body looked, that I was just a big girl, that I was genetically disadvantaged 😒and born with some fat gene. 
The truth however was so much simpler... I was overeating and not moving enough. Just as simple as that.  Once I figured it out and stopped blaming everything else around me, my body started to change and I eventually emerged from the shadows of insecurity.  What’s your story?
