QUICKLY SQUAT MORE COMFORTABLY

When we squat, the hip needs to flex. That's a no brainer. But a lot of you may have found that you feel a pressure or pinching in the crease of the hip as you get down there.😣
.
Now I've talked about technique changes in the past that can help this, and if it's really bad, you may have to resort to swapping in a new exercise temporarily. But another thing you can try is this quick band mobilization.
.
By adding some distraction to the hip as you stretch it, you can make getting into flexion feel a lot better. And then over time, by working on squatting with that new motion, it'll start to stick and you will be able to sink deeper even without the stretch. So try it out. Here's how you do it.⬇️

Test your hip flexion with your ✋ hand under your low back to maintain the lumbar curve and neutral pelvis. Then do the band mob (my band is a heavy band from @team4kor) for 1 to 2 minutes and retest. You'll find it much easier to glide into hip flexion, and your squat can instantly feel more comfortable.

1️⃣ Pretzel stretch ➡️ one of my favorites for stretching the rectus femoris

2️⃣ Standing stool stretch ➡️ a great standing variation of the hip flexor stretch

💥3 Self Myofascial Releases for Improving an Overhead Position💥

While there are many areas of tension that may limit overhead motions, the “Lat” is a major one and can be broken up into 3 different releases.
.
1️⃣ Teres Minor, or the “Little Lat” runs the entire lateral boarder of the Scap. The motion you’ll use is lifting the arm overhead keeping the thump pointing up (or behind you at the top).
.
2️⃣ The entire lat spans from the low back to the shoulder. To get the belly of the muscle by the shoulder, I prefer to roll side to side with your hand behind your head. Then reaching up and away from the roller for the rest of the belly of the muscle. Performing this on the wall will make it easier for those who find it hard to manage the increased pressure that comes from performing this on the floor.

3️⃣ The junction of the Lat and Tricep is an area that is often locked up. A smaller SMR ball is better here. Find the lat tendon and tricep tendon and place the ball in the junction of the two. Start with a lat motion, and finish with lengthening the tricep by reaching the hand towards the opposite shoulder blade.

Always test/retest with a press or range of motion before and after this!

I’m sure you’re sitting there saying yeah right, no way that that light tool work could be doing anything. Well, I’m also sure that most of you saying that have also been smashing and stretching your neck for months and months and not really getting anywhere, so, let’s try something new, shall we? With this feathering stroke we’re tapping into interoceptors which help provide a general sense of well-being and also reflexively decrease fascial tone by decreasing TGF Beta-1 concentrations (whoa…science). If you don’t have a tool…use a serving spoon and some massage cream…really though.

Next we look to activate those neck stabilizers with isometrics. The general goal (some giraffes will never be able to do this) is to be able to get your chin to touch your chest and each clavicle (yes, I’m serious). Once in these positions we’re applying GENTLE pressure at the forehead in an effort to ‘untuck’ our chin while we simultaneously resist this force with our neck muscles. Hold each rep for about 5 seconds and hit each of the 3 positions 5 times. (yes, I totally just gave you sets and reps because I know some crazy people out there will literally do a million)

How well your shoulder moves depends greatly on how well the shoulder blade moves!
.
The shoulder joint (glenohumeral - ball and socket joint) provides only half of the movement for the upper limb
.
If the shoulder blade has 1️⃣ strong and flexible muscles around it, 2️⃣can move  freely and controlled, 3️⃣sits vertically on the rib cage and mid back and can 4️⃣ rotate to 90+ degrees, your shoulder should be healthy!
.
But if the mid back or thoracic spine and rib cage are dysfunctional and SHIFTED, it is almost impossible for the shoulder to be healthy .
Structural shifts in the spine and CORE PROBLEMS with the nervous system can greatly affect the function of the shoulder:
.
1️⃣ Anterior Spinal Shift causes the shoulder blade to tilt forward.
.
This increases the chance of impingement in the shoulder and shoulder pain with overhead movement
.
This spinal postural shift has to be fixed to perfect the shoulder to allow more room in the glenohumeral joint
.
2️⃣ tight muscles attaching to the shoulder blade with restrict its movement and out more stress on the shoulder joint and more chance for injury
.
3️⃣ stress on the nervous system will reduce muscle strength and sensitize the nerves to make it then more sensitive to pain .
The point is that if you have shoulder problems, the 🔑 to fixing the issue long term is to fix the spine!
