This gift was from someone almost 9 years ago. She wanted me to keep this on my dorm table when I left BD for my undergrads. Came across it during fall cleaning . ☺️ #birthdaygift#2008#innocentlove#clock
The beautiful Lucea Town Hall is located in Bustamante Square, in the heart of the picturesque town of Lucea, in Hanover, Jamaica.
It was constructed in the 1800s and was built in what many historians say, is an outstanding Jamaican-Georgian style.
History has it that the clock at the top of the building, was intended for the island of St. Lucia, in the Eastern Caribbean. However, the captain of the ship confused both places and took the clock – a gift from Germany for the people of St. Lucia – to Hanover. That was in 1817.
Lucea residents, refused to let go of the clock although they had originally ordered a more modest version and together, they raised money to pay the difference and claimed the clock.
A German landowner in the parish offered to erect the tower, provided he had a free hand in its design.
Today the clock, with the top of its tower in the shape of the helmet worn by the German Royal Guard, remains a landmark in Lucea.
It is perhaps the only centuries old town clock in Jamaica, which always tells the correct time.
