jeans details! hardware is a gold zipper fly kit purchased from @closetcase.patterns awhile back; fabric is a stretch denim from my local fabric store (I have some Cone Mills waiting on my stash but wanted to try with something cheaper first); pockets are some @birchfabrics quilting cotton I bought ages ago before I realized I don't wear prints 😂
I made jeans!! these are part #selfdrafted / part #gingerjeans and made using the @closetcase.patterns jeans ebook + fitting guide (both AMAZING resources, highly recommend). I drafted some jean shorts this summer and then hacked the ginger legs onto them for these and made some more fitting adjustments to both the crotch and legs while I was at it.
fun fact: I've never bought a pair of high waisted jeans because my booty to lower back curve is nuts, but sewing is magic ✨
if you're scared of making jeans, I highly recommend starting with jean shorts first! less fabric wasted if they don't turn out amazing (cuts down on the anxiety at the very least), and you get to practice crotch curve fitting and all the techniques and hardware installation on something a little smaller. then you can try again with legs like I did 😊
Started my #morganjeans by #closetcasepatterns and did the basteing thing to get a preliminary fit. Except I realize I have zero clue about interpreting these clues. However, I’m forging ahead with the knowledge the second pair will be better! Will still baste and try stuff on as I go. These worries have the benefit of canceling out my rivet worries! 😁 Obsessively hanging on every word from @closetcase.patterns in the Sew Your Own Jeans ebook and pants fitting PDFs. #jeanuary#sewingjeans#sewcialists#sewersofinstagram#handmadewardrobe
Still not sure whether this cropped #kalle shirt by @closetcase.patterns is more 'futuristic replicant' or 'retro geisha'. Either way, it's got nice guts (despite the lack of ironing involved) And i think it might me a liberty of London print from @wearethefabricstore with non-matching vintage buttons so I guess it's pretty fancy #closetcasefiles#closetcasepatterns#libertyoflondon#kallecroppedshirt
It’s time to choose an outer fabric for my waterproof #kellyanorak . My favorites are the first 2 swatches in the first photo. The peacoat navy sample is thinner and a little stiffer than the 2-tone charcoal. The job of this jacket will be to serve as a light winter layer for traveling so I will add both a fun lining (ideas anyone?!) and either thinsulate or wool batting for insulation (ideas anyone?!). #decisionsdecisions#technicalfabric#closetcasepatterns#sundaysewing
After listening to @lovetosew.podcast and @closetcase.patterns talking about facing your fears with sewing, I stopped procrastinating about sewing myself a garment (because it won’t be perfect or I won’t like the way it looks on me) and just did it! I’m so happy with the result. It’s an Appleton dress by @cashmerette ❤️ Thanks for the great podcast and the pep talk girls! 😊👍🏻 I even pushed past my overlocking disasters (last pic) 😩#lovetosewpodcast#cashmerettepatterns#closetcasepatterns
I’m ready to wear my @closetcase.patterns Ginger Jeans 🙌🏼 I finished them last month, but the Cone Mills denim I used doesn’t have as much stretch as the denim I had used for my previous pairs and they were superrrr tight on me 🤦🏻♀️. But I’ve been eating vegan food exclusively and getting in workouts with @ml_intrinsicresistance and now they fit 😹🙌🏼🎉🎈Also, I’m calling these my True Love Jeans because I was listening to the band True Love and I used @libselliott True Love fabric for the pockets and waistband 💁🏻♀️ #madebymisscrayolacreepy#closetcasepatterns#truelovefabric
#closetcasepatterns Morgan jeans cut out and basted up, ready for a jolly good fitting. Learnt from my ginger experience by cutting a larger size at the waist but reckon they’ll need some taking in. I just went ahead and did a sway back adjustment already. Wish me luck 🤞#ilovesewing#sewinginleeds
I'm very pleased with my new gingers but as with about all my previous pants I wish I made them a bit tighter. I even skipped prewashing hoping to fool myself to make them tight enough. So there's a whole lot of pattern adjustments in these;
*moved the inseam 2cm towards the back at the ankles
*flat seat adjustment (tried the fish eye dart but somehow it just made the back wrinkles worse 🤔)
*scooped out the seat and crotch curve and added some at the hips instead (back only).
*shortened the legs 4cm.
I think it worked, finally 🤗💃👖 Now I need to get my hands on some more denim.

Beginnings of a #clarecoat . Managed to cut out all the wool and interfacing before cutting fatigue set in. Best to stop before any mistakes get made! (Charity shop green wool, interfacing from stash)
👋🏻 Hello! I’m still here, and still sewing... just more slowly than before. Baby is now a toddler 😱 and I’m back at work, so I’m sewing here and there for 10 minutes at a time, rather than hours at a time.
I made this #kalleshirt a couple of months ago before going back to work. I went with the covered placket because I’d never done one before and love how it turned out. I love the cropped shirt length with high waisted black jeans, and this crisp cotton gives the shirt a nice, structured look. 👌🏻 #sewing#imakemyownclothes#handmadewardrobe#canadasews#torontosews#closetcasepatterns
A HUGE thank you to @closetcase.patterns (Heather Lou) for such easy directions. And also to my husband who tightened things where I couldn’t 🙂 love my sewing table. Let me know if you need the link #sewingtable#closetcasepatterns#cuttingtable
Ginger update! I almost never cut the seam allowance in corners. If it is a 90 degree angle it most likely will be sharp anyway. The key is to fold it tightly and for the waist band in jeans I want to keep the extra body. Then I'll just hammer down the bulkiest parts.
For this pair I chose to sew an extra row of topstitching in a coordinating color to see if it will prevent wrinkling (the first pair pictured for comparison). I did a second fitting before topstitching the inseams and it seems ok. Almost done now 😌👖
As promised I present a whole bunch of pictures of ginger jeans in the making. First out is a finished front and some machine maintenance. I had no canned air and this proved to work pretty well too 😀 and all lint is now removed 👏. The first fitting was ok in the front and a bit more wrinkles than I hoped for in the back (sorry no picture). Sigh, this is version 5 trying to get rid of that problem 🤷🤦At least a small fix made it somewhat better, we'll se how it turns out. I also rushed ahead and tried out the flowery rivets and I think they'll work well.
1)Back pocket detail. The outside and inside of the same seam. I'm pleased with the outside but it's a good thing that the inside is hidden. .
2) My most used presser foot, although not ideal with the open toe for straight stitches it works so well as an edge guide and lets me use the built-in walking foot on my Pfaff, IDT®
3) A bit of interfacing both here and there. I used a woven one for durability. I have lengthened the pockets a few centimeters, they were so small on the original. Maybe I'll even manage a princess seam finish inside the pockets this time.
I think I’m about 75 percent to the finish line to finishing my first pair of jeans! 👖Everything is constructed except the waistband and finalizing the fit and back pockets. I survived that zipper fly and the pattern instructions and sew along were super helpful that it was such a less intimating process than first imagined. Crossing my fingers that I can make the fit adjustments needed 😬 but if not it was a great learning experience and I will definitely be tackling another pair! #sew#sewing#isew#isewmyownclothes#memade#handmade#handmadewardrobe#gingerjeans#closetcasepatterns#jeans#topstitch
I'm going to be doing my #makenine2018 a little differently (and hopefully more effectively) this year. For the next nine days I'm going to document a pattern (or concept) with a textile pairing that I already have, and on day ten do the standard retrospective grid. I'm a terrible planner for my hobbies (I use it all up on work I think), and I'm hoping this will actually make this challenge more achievable for me than just throwing a bunch of beautiful patterns into a grid with no logical thought. 😹 So here is the first (which is a bit of a cheat since I started these this weekend): make one of nine - #closetcasepatterns#morganjeans in a scrummy #conemillsdenim from the original Morgan Jeans denim kit (better late than never?!). #sewersofinstagram#sewcialist#2018makenine
As you see, I’m not one for creating within the appropriate season. I wanted to make a wearable test pair of #Gingerjeans . My previous pair fit horribly. This one is much better! I see I still have to accommodate for my sway back, make the waist band a bit smaller around, and perhaps consider backing off the extra 1” in waist height. What can I say, I’m in love with a high-waisted jean! I’m looking forward to my next pair!
For those interested: my ill-fit issues for my first pair of Gingers were in the waist. It was waaaaaay too big. Also, following my size as per the envelope got “my size”, I think, but a size that was much to big and baggy for my personal tastes. .
Finally managed to decide on my #makenine2018
1: The Drop Set by MadeIt Patterns (which was free with Simply Sewing Mag). 2: Bettine Dress by Tilly and the Buttons 3: Overalls by Burda-Young. 4: Kelly Anorak by Closet Case Patterns. 5: The Jenna Jump Suit by Cotton and Chalk. 6: Ginger Jeans (skinny) by Closet Case Patterns. 7: Ultimate Trousers by Sew Over It. 8: Agnes Top by Tilly and the Buttons. 9: Ultimate Shift dress by Sew Over It. I’m so pleased with my choice and these are definitely wardrobe staples for me. The one I’m most looking forward to is the one that I am most terrified by and that’s the Kelly Anorak!!!! “Feel the fear and do it anyway!!” Lol 😆 I know I’ve made an Ultimate shift dress already but I’m going the make the longer sleeve this time and fit it a little better! Wish me luck and feel free to poke me with a stick if I’m lagging behind a little! 😁 #closetcasepatterns#sewoverit#tillyandthebuttons#burdayoung#madeitpatterns#cottonandchalk#dressmaking#dressmaker#sewing#makeyourownclothes
