FINALLY! I have decided on pattern and fabric choices for my jacket. Originally I was all set to make the Tosti jacket, but having seen so many awesome Kellys lately (especially the one made by @guthrieghani ), I decided I want to have a go at this pattern instead. I’ve changed my initial fabric plan too - originally I opted for oilskin and was all set to make an order, but then I found this antique waxed cotton - its SO nice! The colour is copper chestnut. Plan is to line it with thinsulate to make it nice and toasty. Lining fabric still to be found #sewing#sewistsofinstagram#sewersofinstagram#imakemyownclothes#closetcasepatterns
Mix it up. So I’m working on the Kalle Shirt in View A and I’m so excited about it. I had three small pieces of indigo dyed linen that my mom dyed and gifted me. It’s hard to tell here but the folded one on the left is a lighter blue. I’m a big fan of squeezing a pattern out of the smallest amount of fabric possible and this time I knew I couldn’t get the whole thing out of the dark indigo. I went with the yoke and hem facings in shibori, which I think is fun. And now I have to decide how patchworked i want it to be. I could do the collar, button placket and sleeve cuff in the lighter blue, OR I actually have enough of the dark blue left for those which would make it more cohesive. Undecided. #bpsewvember#kalleshirtdress#indigodyed#imadethis#mindfullymade#handmadewardrobe#closetcasepatterns
#morganjeans Round 2: I wasn’t sure I wanted to do the pattern again because my first experience was a little disappointing...the denim bagged out so fast. But I figured since half the work is getting them to fit I might as well try again and I am SO glad I did. I think the problem with the first pair was the denim, not the pattern, and the fact that I should have interfaced the waistband to make at least that part fit snugly even if the rest bagged out. This denim from #blackbirdfabrics feels so sturdy. I took these pics after wearing them a full day (a day which included being on my hands and knees picking up Legos) and they still look good. I will wear the others still, but I prefer these a 100 times over and it makes me want to make another 2 pair while the pattern is fresh in my mind. A few adjustments: I copied the back pocket from old Madewells again, used a smaller seam allowance on the waistband to get a higher fit, and used the selvedge to edge the coin pocket. For some reason on both pairs I made, the pocket lining did not match up with the pocket correctly. I knew from my last pair that I was going to be bothered by a gaping pocket, so I decided to stitch them closed. The front holds together better that way and I tend to only use my back pockets anyway. One other mistake was that I topstitched too close to the bottom edge of the legs so that the hems fell down. I ended up trimming off the raw edge of hem and pressing the topstitching down, so there will be a combination hem/ fray, so it turned out to be a happy mistake. Finally, anyone interested in splitting an 8 yard roll of this funky Cone Mills denim? I kind of want to try a pair of Morgans in them. They could turn out clownish or cool...TBD.
I want to write more about the making of these jeans later, but first some thoughts on “boyfriend” jeans. I have loved skinny jeans and they can be fairly comfortable, but I’m starting to resent the idea that a woman’s leg is sexy only if the silhouette is as skinny as possible. I still like to wear skinny jeans when I dress up, but for day to day wear I want to be comfortable. Why should a comfortable style of jean have to be borrowed from our boyfriends? My legs don’t look as slender as they could in these jeans and I love the way they look. #bpsewvember Day 14: Tricky. Sewing a pair of jeans can be tricky due to all the pieces, the fly zipper, the pocket origami, squaring off the waistband, the pressure of perfect topstitching, the installation of hardware, etc etc. BUT the brilliant group of gals who took our jeans workshop this past weekend were so talented we were blown away by what they accomplished in two days. Here is Sheila’s pair of @closetcase.patterns #gingerjeans that are sheer PERFECTION I tell ya. And she learned to sew with us only eight months ago!! #jeansmaking#jeans#sewing#handmadewardrobe#closetcasepatterns#wow#gogirl
14: tricky| I have made so many items of clothing but never pants, they scare the...well pants off me. I just feel like they will be so tricky. I think given my post baby (now toddler) body I find it hard to buy clothes that fit my shape. this morning I have seen these on my ig feed and think I might have found a pair of pants to make. #bpsewvember#closetcasepatterns
Day 10 ⚫ Everyday I get so many sewing ideas from reading blogs, newsletters, vlogs or just seeing someone rocking an awesome top in the park. Lately I'm crushing hard on @guthrieghani version of the #kellyanorak @closetcase.patterns (I watched and rewatched her vlogs on this several times already 😅) and thinking of making one for next Autumn. There's a long list of supplies to get so I think I'm starting at the right time! 😆 Anyone know where to get good waxed cotton in Melbourne? (or any fabrics well suited for this pattern) #bpsewvember @bimbleandpimble
Finally finished my Ginger jeans! I'm going to get some photos of them on later today but here's some close ups of the amazing zip fly and back pockets - check out those rivets you guys! I used @closetcase.patterns Jeans Hardware kit, which was awesome (though I got a little stung on customs), so much easier to buy everything in a onner, rather than sourcing it all individually when I didn't really know what I was looking for. I used the 'Sew your Dream Jeans' online course, which was super easy to follow and made these a dream to make. I have fabric waiting for at least 2 more pairs and never have to go through the horror of buying jeans ever again!!

Started a new job and celebrating making it through my first week in my new #kalleshirt by @closetcase.patterns with cats. I’m normally a dog person, but I do like this print. And I’m pleasantly surprised by this pattern. I have another one in the making already. #sewing#closetcasepatterns
I’ve got my sewjo back! Yesterday I whipped up (for some reason I was in a hurry but I wasn’t really in a hurry, I just wanted to see how it turned out) this Ebony Tee from Closet Case Files. Can you tell I lengthened it by 10 centimeters?! Neither can I, to me it’s still quite cropped! I used scraps I had left over from a dress I made a few weeks ago, I’m extra happy with this test version because the fabric is just SO comfy. I’ve got a few meters of dark green velvet laying around and guess what I’ll make out of that? Yeps: an Ebony Tee dress PLUS cropped version like this one. Hope I can get that out of my 3,5 meters, because I found out there’s a huge hole in the last half meter, in the fold line 😭 Anyways. Happy Friday, people. Enjoy your makes & your making 😘
#bpsewvember winter plans...one of these winters I'll make this fabulous coat pattern by #closetcasepatterns#clarecoat I haven't tackled a legit coat pattern yet! But one day I will conquer this sewing skill 🧥 (This image is the one shown on the closet case site, I love EVERYTHING about it, the fabric choice, the contrast, the side zip!!)
#bpsewvember Day 7: Summer -- I kicked my sewing into high gear this summer because I had a deadline! I had a ticket to LA, in order to visit my best friend in the whole wide world. I helped drive her out there 10 (really???) years ago and had only visited once, in a blip of a visit for some crappy job I had. A legitimate visit was looooooong overdue (#kids ) I knew my "I've had 3 kids and completely given up" skirted tankini was NOT gonna cut it at the Palm Springs Ace Hotel so I dared to dream I could sew the #sophieswimsuit by #closetcasepatterns in time to chill poolside in confidence. AND I DID!!! I sourced, I tested cup sizes, I watched the awesome (can't praise it more!!!!) instructional course by @closetcase.patterns a zillion times and I sewed my own swim suit. And I felt like a goddamned superhero. I'm not scared of sewing jeans anymore because I did THIS. Coats, sure, bring it on! Like Heather (@closetcase.patterns) always says, anybody can do anything if it's broken down into small, manageable steps. The illusion is gone. It's not magic, it's just sewing. Oh yeah, and I also sewed two #kalleshirtdress (es) for the occasion. One out of black double gauze and one out of olive green Robert Kaufman Brussels Washer. Forgive the third photo--I'd just gotten a massage and was trying to get a photo of the dress but also not giving a fuck... #brusselswasherlinen#brusselswasher#doublegauze#memadeeveryday#slowfashion#handmadewardrobe
☀️D A Y S E V E N ☀️#bpsewvember Summer! I think pretty much everything I ever sew is meant for summer (less fabric = faster makes = hell yes). But I gotta say out of it all, this #bombshellsuit by Closetcase holds the #1 position in my ❤️. Hoping to squeeze in another one this winter before my trip to Hawaii in January! 👙 #summersewing
I finished (minus some hand-stitching) my @closetcase.patterns #kellyanorak this weekend! I’ve already tested it in the rain because #portlandrain and I love it.
First jacket: ✅
Finally using up fabric bought at @fabricdepot more than a year ago: ✅
Using up fabric scraps from other projects: ✅✅✅
Finally getting the olive jacket I’ve been lusting after for years: 😍
Changes for next time: add an angled split hem in back, additional pockets?, lined instead of underlined, pop snaps instead of this kind (whatever they’re called), lengthen sleeves >1”, reshape shoulders somehow so I can lift my arms more easily, remember to sew the bar tacks at the right time, and pay attention to right and left when I’m cutting out the front 🤦🏻♀️. #ceyxicsewingnotes
#bpsewvember Origin Story // My mom use to sew here and there; mostly our halloween costumes when we were little. I took 1 sewing class as a child but it didnt stick. 20 years later Im looking for curtains for my house and decided I didnt want to spend the amazing amount of $ on custom curtains so I went for it with my mom's help......Then I started sewing cotton things like bags and little things here and there for my kids with an old Pfaff I bought from a neighbor.... enter @threadsewingschool and @chelisepatterson who gave me my first real intro into knits and clothing. From there I was hooked... and havent stopped since 👌 #closetcasepatterns#ebonytee
Just in time for the end of the Madrid «autumn» (and it's even waterproof--in case it ever rains here again) #closetcasepatterns
Oh hi, it's me, Jessamy, and I'm joining in for #BPsewvember 3 days late, because that's how I roll. My name is pretty much just my name, and I'm cool with that. I can often be found at home sewing, or standing in my mucky yard trying to get my husband to take a picture of one of my latest makes without it being blurry. He's a good sport, but not great with the camera. Can't wait to pop in and out of another photo a day challenge, because lets' be real, I can't do anything everyday. Except drink coffee and brush my teeth. I definitely do those things everyday. #isewmyownclothes#butidontalwayshemthem
Wow that was tough going to get all my Pattern pieces cut out for my #closetcasepatterns#kellycoat with only 2 meters of fabric rather than the 2.3 meters as stated!...I’m still to find a lining Fabric (hopefully @livingstonetextiles will have something when I pop into their store on Saturday 😍) as I want to have it lightly padded due to feeling the cold a lot more than most ☃️ I am very excited to start making this coat and I know I will be wearing it all the time 😍 #newhandmadecoat#handmadecoat#handmade#sewing#sewingcoats
