This posture, takes soooo much concentration. My Ashtanga practice began with a lot of modifications, so I never learned this asana until after I had been practicing for some time. When I was introduced to it...๐Ÿ˜ž๐Ÿ˜… You want me to do what?! I thought for sure I was going to snap my neck. I was so scared of losing balance in my shoulders and injuring my neck that it took months for me to be able to straighten my arms. Even now I take my time straightening my arms  because I STILL worry about losing my balance. I always feel like I'm on the cusp of falling- a gentle breeze could probably knock me out of urdhva padmasana. Just kidding. ๐Ÿ˜‰ The fear and worry remain, and yet I do it EVERY.DAY. My ashtanga practice going ok! No more, no less. Its a hard routine to keep. The last weeks I have accually just stayed in bed a couple of times. Or snoozed so I get less time to practice. But wow I can really feel the diffrence in my body now. I was so stiff (still are) in the mornings, it starting to loose up abit. Yesterday I went to an #ashtangayoga class for the first time in quite a while. 
I truly love the practice. It's so well rounded and it really forces you to detach and turn inward.

With a little mini vacation, it feels like such a long time ago, that I posted an ashtanga pose.  Ashtanga has been playing with my head, as Micheal Franti sings, "The more I learn the less I know." What I think I know, is this shape is the next pose in the closing sequence.  I was taught it as sirsasana B, but my Ashtanga online resource calls it something different.  Which then led to a long conversation with my teacher about how many times the sequence has changed with seemingly no reason. 
What I can say for certain, is it took me several days to get this shot, as every time I think my legs are parallel to the ground they are not.  The pose takes a large amount of core strength, and places additional pressure on the neck,  as the weight of the body shifts forward.  So practice with full awareness.

The Closing Sequence.

Last week I said goodbye to Tofino and moved back over to the mainland, where I'll be living and teaching in Vancouver and also spending time in North India. Although I find it hard right now to say goodbye to wonderful people and close relationships, I am fortunate that I've had the time to connect with friends and reflect.

In Ashtanga Yoga each practice finishes with a slow cool down and inversion sequence, that harnesses the work of the postures and directs the energy in a way that increases mental and spiritual benefits. The slow practice (the sequence here is 1 minute but should be much longer as it doesn't show the long holds) gives us space to listen deeply and develop a mental clarity that leads to awareness, insights and inner vision. 
This is a framework that can be applied to any experience in life, meaning all that we do can be processed in a way that may be of benefit. 
So here's to reflection, to applying the lessons forward and to whatever's coming next -as fuelled by these island rainforest teachings.

#Sirsasana in the hallway of our hotel. It's the beginning of low season here in Costa Rica so there's hardly anyone here! That means the hallway is the perfect option for a practice space. ๐Ÿ˜Š When I do #headstand I always think of pressing not only my forearms but also my wrists and little fingers into the ground to really engage my shoulders. Sirsasana is the next pose in the ashtanga closing sequence. I love this pose.  I feel steady and strong.  But there is still some tweaking to be done...my ankles need to come a little further back to be in line with my hips. Then I needed to see that my body could experience things again, so it became more playful. Now, I've noticed I have been feeling a lot more grounded however I was noticing my sleeping was becoming disturbed heavily on the days I would practice #secondseries so I took this past week and made myself take extra time (even more than normal) in #closingsequence and it was incredible I slept like a baby ๐Ÿผ. I had one day where it was rushed and it completely threw off my day. I think at times, it's nice to step back and observe what changes (or if any) are happening due to your #practice ๐Ÿ˜‡ just a little #foodforthought hope you guys have a great week!

It is considered that there are  5 main zones on the body where energy can be lost and received....the crown, the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet.  For this reason traditionally one sits in padmฤsana when meditating as all points are off the ground. It looks like bada padmฤsana would be a great way to keep the energy connection kept within the body. I like to think of it like the number 8 or symbol of infinity...a never ending circuit !!!

An awkward truth: it can feel wrong to hear someone call me "inspiring." It may seem like I would be instantly flattered, but honestly it can be just hard to hear sometimes. Makes me wonder if I'm glorifying struggle or beautifying my life too much before sharing it.  How can I be an inspiration when many days I feel like I'm taking two steps backward and only one step forward?  What is inspiring about moving in the wrong direction and being human and average and just going about my day?

But then I remember that I have these feelings too. I have these people too.  For example, @tinabock has been a big inspiration for me recently, especially in terms of my practice.  Today I was walking from work to yoga and trying to convince myself to practice. I just didn't want to. I had a long rope intensive weekend with lots of feels. My body is sore. And I fell and bashed one of my toes real good Saturday night. So I knew I would have to modify *a lot.*

I honestly stopped about a 100 yards away from the yoga shala and just watched some of @tinabock's recent videos--not just because she is strong and graceful and a joy to watch. But also because she has the kind of energy that I want in my life. An awkward truth: it can feel wrong to hear someone call me "inspiring." It may seem like I would be instantly flattered, but honestly it can be just hard to hear sometimes. Makes me wonder if I'm glorifying struggle or beautifying my life too much before sharing it. How can I be an inspiration when many days I feel like I'm taking two steps backward and only one step forward? What is inspiring about moving in the wrong direction and being human and average and just going about my day? . But then I remember that I have these feelings too. I have these people too. For example, @tinabock has been a big inspiration for me recently, especially in terms of my practice. Today I was walking from work to yoga and trying to convince myself to practice. I just didn't want to. I had a long rope intensive weekend with lots of feels. My body is sore. And I fell and bashed one of my toes real good Saturday night. So I knew I would have to modify *a lot.* . I honestly stopped about a 100 yards away from the yoga shala and just watched some of @tinabock's recent videos--not just because she is strong and graceful and a joy to watch. But also because she has the kind of energy that I want in my life. So she reminds me that energy like her's is possible--but only if you're willing to show up to your mat everyday, even when your toe is busted and your heart is full of feelings.
