Mother Nature gave me a huge reality check on Sunday. Now that I had all day yesterday to rest and process what happened the night before, I am ready to share with you guys our experience.

We leave Colorado Springs at 3 in the morning to arrive at the trail head by 5:30. Find the trail head and begin having the time of our life. We had IDEAL weather, plenty of food, and plenty of weed, we were golden. Except I shattered my phone to no return about 2 miles in. At this point I had know doubt in my mind we were going to summit this peak. We make it to South Zapata Lake, took a few naked yoga pictures on the frozen lake and push on. After the lake is where it starts to go south. From the lake to the summit, there was no marked trail so we attempted to scramble loose rocks up to the peak. This is where time just took over and we got stuck on the steep ridge line. We had to make the call right here (sooooo close to the summit) to turn around. We knew we had to at least be off these unstable rocks before dark. We started slowly scrambling our way back down. By the time we get down from the ridge the sun is almost set. Here we are, about to be in pitch black trying to soak in the last bit of sun light we had left. We marked with neon orange tape our trail on the way up.. as we start descending from the lake we don’t see ONE ribbon. Now Madison’s phone is on red about to die, we forgot the charging cord in the car (of course). Recap- here we are pitch black, no phone, no ribbons to find our trail, and fresh snow so no tracks (except the hundreds of wild animals). We finally just kept making our way down and found or original trail, well the fresh snow covering our tracks made us lose it AGAIN. This time true panic sets in, lost on a mountainside in the middle of a December night just me and Madison. We attempted to call rescue he was about to die any second. Couldn’t get through to 911, so at this point we looked at each other and said let’s get down this mountain. We ran 3 hours in pitch black darkness and found our way to the car.

I feel extremely lucky to have gotten off that mountain alive. Until next time Mt. Ellingwood.

For anybody who thinks Mount Evans is some sort of gimme cupcake type 14er, try on the west ridge via the Scott Gomer Creek Gully for size. Has to be one of the best most punishing 12 hr days I've ever had. After 6 hrs of climbing(I swear I was trying to go fast) we had the summit to ourselves and an endless sea of mountains to gaze upon.. #cohighpeaks #conquerthemall #funinthemountains #colorado #denver #highlife #hightimes #happyplace #co14ers #14er #photo #photooftheday #thatsneat #pictureoftheday #instagood #picture #smokeon #instagreat #wildbynature #goodlife #mtevans #fitfam #getoutside #optoutside #mountains #peakbagger #peaks

"Scaling Greyrock Face"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After hiking up to Greyrock in northern Colorado, I came across the climber scaling the rock face of this monolith. He had his backpack on and moved his way up the cracks of the face. I always find it fascinating seeing these lone climbers all alone doing this sport… seems a bit dangerous… but I guess some might say the same thing about lone hikers/photographers in the wilderness.
There were a lot of emotions on top of this summit. Thankfully, I was able to share the excitement, fear, discomfort, and awe with these two incredible people. When you can trust your physical and emotional safety with others, you know you have a solid bond❤️
High key dreaming of winter weather! Check out this thick fog that covered the mesa last winter. Those colors are making me crave that winter weather😭 I originally planned to share another Arches photo today. Once I seen this I had to share! Hope you all have a wonderful Monday❄️
I keep a lot of things about my life hidden in privacy. Things about me that no one would ever guess. But lately I’ve been learning to walk in more boldness about who I am. So, with that being said I want to be the first person with Cerebral Palsy to climb all the 14ers in Colorado. Why? Because I was born with CP. I have a mild form, and most people wouldn’t even notice I have it unless I told them exactly how it affects me as an adult, and maybe then they could see my “symptoms”. I can count on one hand the amount of people in my life that I’ve told.....not out of shame or embarrassment but because I don’t want to be defined by it or treated like a baby or looked at weirdly. Plus, the conversational topic of having brain damage that affects physical movement never comes up in social settings. 😂😂 Having Cerebral Palsy will never been be a barrier to things I want to do in life, especially with climbing. I consider myself very very fortunate to only have a mild form. Hopefully I can be an inspiration somehow for others to achieve goals that they have and not feel limited due to physical restrictions. #climbingwithcerebralpalsy
I love being able to see mountains I’ve climbed from another perspective. Here you can see the Tuning Fork Coulier. A few weeks ago, I was telling a man how to get to the Maroon Bells. It’s a set of instructions I’ve given at least a hundred times, but for some reason my own familiar words struck me in a way they had not before. “Maroon Lake,” I told him, “is where I fell in love with Aspen.” Ever since 2008 when I first came with my dad to climb South Maroon Peak, I’ve lived with a tremendous desire to call this place my home. And now - almost 10 years later - it is. My eyes welled up at the realization.
I started working on this image over the summer. I hope its the first of many that I have the opportunity to create while I’m here. www.joekyle.net
So, I thought I was done with bagging new 14er summits this year 🤔 NOPE! Summited Blanca Peak (14,345’) today, Colorado’s 4th highest mountain. Took 12 hours total. Slog fest. Suffer fest. 😭 Almost cried. Lots of loose loose rock and fresh snow, so you know what that means! Yep, POST HOLING!! 😫 But we made it!! 🗻🗻🗻 14er #36!
