Day Ninety Five with @ironbridgemuseum. Today I've been continuing with work on the Scheduled Monuments in our care. Scheduling is the highest level of protection a building or structure can be granted, and is reserved for places of National Importance. As part of my work I access spaces within scheduled monuments not open to the general public, in order to monitor their overall condition. This photograph was taken inside the 'Old Furnace' in Coalbrookdale, where I need to inspect for movement in any cracks within the structure - see Day Eighty Six for the crack monitoring kit and Day Thirty Three for the 1980s cover building erected over the 'Old Furnace'. #ironbridgemuseums#ironbridgemuseum#ironbridgegorge#scheduledmonument#Coalbrookdale#protection#spaces#monitor#oldfurnace#whs#worldheritagesite#unesco

THANK YOU to everyone who came to support our first Street Food Night of 2018 💚 - congrats to our friends, and the evening’s traders, @plantkindvegan & @toyahemily, who smashed it!
Our next Street Food Night is 26.01.18 with @mixitupfoods, hope to see you there ✌️
Street Food Night by @plantkindvegan and @toyahemily . ⚫️Wrap up warm; food is ordered and served up by the traders out front of the café.
⚫️Your food is being made to order and there will be a queue... why not grab a beer first from inside and use the queuing time to get a bit social.
⚫️ Our street food events are first come, first served. When the food's gone, it's gone!
⚫️Drinks are served inside the lodge.
⚫️ There's seating outside & inside the café, and in the adjoining hall - it's *very* limited! We encourage sharing tables and getting social.
See you tonight ✌️
Day Eighty Eight with @ironbridgemuseum. A Curatorial Team meeting this morning to discuss the 2018 programme of exhibitions, displays and related work. And a meeting this afternoon to discuss possible funding opportunities for a project with another charity. In between I was working on my research to identify areas of archaeological potential around our listed buildings and scheduled monuments. As an example, this the (famous) painting by Francois Vivares entitled 'A View of the Upper Works at Coalbrookdale in the County of Salop' (1758). Looking at previous archaeological reports enables me to carry out 'deposit modelling', where calculations can be made about where archaeology will still exist, and at what kind of depth below the surface it can be expected. The location of the 'Old Furnace', which has been partly excavated has been marked in red, and I'm looking at what kind of archaeological remains still survive around it and how they can be plotted onto a digital map for future reference. #ironbridgemuseums#ironbridgemuseum#ironbridgegorge#coalbrookdale#curatorial#exhibitions#displays#funding#archaeological#listedbuilding#scheduledmonument#salop#deposit#depth#oldfurnace#excavated#digital#map#GIS
Day Eighty Seven with @ironbridgemuseum. Today was essentially a big 'to-do' list. Which doesn't make for the most riveting Instagram image. But those 'to-do' lists achieve something. Late last night Dr Chris Caple from @durhamuniversity came to collect four boxes of archaeological finds from Coalbrookdale. That doesn't sound very interesting but the finds dated from the 1960s, and came from a very famous excavation, that of Hen Domen (NGR SO21379802) a medieval motte and bailey castle in Montgomeryshire (Powys). Hen Domen was excavated between 1960 and 1992, during which time half of the castle was revealed. The four boxes of finds collected were mislaid in the early 60s and never examined or included in the final report, published in 2000. The finds had somehow ended up in Coalbrookdale, and I was able to make arrangements for their examination. Dr Caple's students will examine, and where appropriate conserve the finds, before they are written up and then the finds and a report on them passed to @museumwales, the National Museum Wales, Cardiff. I'm pleased I was able to facilitate this work, especially as my other specialism is medieval archaeology #ironbridgemuseums#ironbridgemuseum#ironbridge#todolist#instagram#durhamuniversity#archaeologicalfinds#coalbrookdale#famous#excavation#hendomen#medieval#motte#motteandbailey#castle#boxes#finds#finalreport#conserve#conservation#nationalmuseumwales#medievalarchaeology
