In an attempt to keep ourselves mentally warm in the London chill today, we’re dedicating our #foodiefriday to the round little genius, the coconut.🥥
The coconut tree is a synonymous symbol of the tropics, something we’re very much longing for today. Much more than just a beautiful palm, the coconut is a primary source of food, drink and shelter. In Sanskrit the coconut palm is called ‘kalpa vriksha’ loosely translated as “the tree which provides all the necessities of life’.🌴
There is no doubt that the coconut if one of the pillars of Filipino cuisine, coconut milk is one of the most popular and widely used ingredients in Filipino food. From Laing to Bibingka to Halo Halo. Ginataan is a Filipino term which literarily means ‘done with coconut milk’. Did you know that a single coconut has as much protein as a quarter pound of Beefsteak? Go figure.
Coconut production is an important economic aspect of the Philippines. According to figures published by the UN in 2009, the Philippines were the world’s largest producer of coconuts. The coconut is so important that it is managed under its own dedicated agency, The Philippine Coconut Agency.
