Last night I went to @lasiguanas for dinner for the first time and I was very impressed! They have a separate gluten free and vegan menu and the waiter came over with the allergen book so I could see exactly what I could eat. I went for the veggie chilli which is made with sweet potato, butternut squash, chickpeas served with spring onion rice underneath and gluten free corn tortilla wraps. I also had the gluten free and vegan holy guacamole plate with corn chips 😍 100% will be returning and definitely recommend!
I LOVE this all butter cookies from @ocadouk new gluten free range! They're really buttery, a really good size, not too crumbly and makes me want to keep going back for more!! Has anybody else tried them yet? I was so impressed!
Did you know that Newburn bakehouse is now @warburtonsgf ?😊 they have also had a packaging rebrand which I think looks fab! I had an amazing delivery of gluten and milk free goodies from them yesterday including their tiger loaf, protein wraps, sandwich thins, multiseed loaf and crumpets 😍 if you are yet to try the tiger loaf, you need to! It’s my all time favourite gluten free bread alternative with no holes and no falling apart! 😊😋
After a long break from insta, I’m back and it wouldn’t be January without some healthy (ish) food inspo right? So here’s tonight’s dins 🥗 A warm salad of chicken, chorizo, asparagus, potatoes all mopped up with the @tescofood GF olive bloomer 😍
Let’s have a chat about why being gluten free is #notjustafaddiet
Living with coeliac disease is really, really tough. It isn’t comparable to going vegan for example because it is not a choice. There is no cure to coeliac disease, the only way to help yourself is to avoid all gluten/foods containing wheat, rye and barley.
There are 2 reasons why gluten free has become a trend for non coeliacs.
1. people with coeliac disease can lose weight very quickly as their stomachs are so damaged they can’t absorb anything. Because they lose weight some people think that following the same diet will have that affect on them, despite not having the disease. Many coeliacs actually want to gain weight. In my case my iron was so low, and my absorption ability was so poor I had to be connected to a drip so I could absorb iron.
2. gluten is in everything. So, by avoiding gluten you’re avoiding cookies, biscuits, rich sauces etc and THAT is how people lose weight on a gluten free diet. It would make sense for them to cut those things out without calling it “going gluten free”
It makes a mockery of my illness when people eat gluten free without cause because they do it so poorly. For example, in a restaurant they don’t mind if it has “a little gluten” whereas for a coeliac we have to ask for our meals to be prepared in a separate area to avoid cross contamination. But, when I order a gluten free meal the restaurant staff don’t think “a little gluten” will do any harm, when for many coeliacs it will. -
