If you think comedy can't change lives, keep reading.
Last night, Brandon and I went to the @alljanecomedy Festival here in Portland. Folks, I adore this man, but for all his great qualities, he doesn't have the most open mind in the world. Me, I'm a live and let live kind of gal. I don't care about your orientation, fetishes, religion, whatever. Just be you and I won't even blink twice. But Brandon ... when he sees "different," he sees "weird." Snap judgements come forth, often not positive. He feels uncomfortable. It's a topic we've talked a lot about over the course of two years, and I've always hoped I could somehow help him realize that "different" isn't weird, and if it is, that weird isn't a bad thing. Let it be, as they say.
After the show, which featured all women---women who said what they thought and live how they want to live---Brandon said to me that he realized something. I'm paraphrasing here ... He realized that he doesn't know why he feels irritation and anger towards people who are different, but that these women helped him see and understand that we're essentially all struggling together in this thing called life. They helped him realize there are issues far worse in this world that should be making him angry ... not someone's orientation, look, style, etc. And he realized that, under our exteriors which may look different, humans are humans. We love. We hurt. We're all just people trying to make it.
You guys, when we left @curiouscomedy and I asked him what he thought of the show, these revelations were the last things I was expecting to hear. I almost cried.
If a grown man of 30 can learn empathy through a 2hr comedy show, it gives me hope that other old dogs can also learn new tricks. What's most beautiful to me is that Brandon's new trick --- apcceptance --- was the result of laugher. From sharing joy with a room full of strangers. We listened to others about their experiences and hardships, the absurdities of life, and we came out better people for it.
Conversations matter. Listening matters. And laughter can deliver us from our own darkness.
Please, check out @curiouscomedy if you can. You won't regret it.
