In the afternoon I visited 'We have a dream', the exhibition in the Nieuwe Kerk about Gandhi, King and Mandela had one slogan got stucked into my mind: 'Mandela's Torch Bearers'. At Arti et Amicitiae there was the artist talk with the South African generation who were born after the Apartheid period. Nate Mokgotho and Molemo Molloa introduced their project 'made-you-look.net' which will be part of the exhibition Tell Freedom. Opening Friday 26th of January at the Kunsthal Kade in Amersfoort, do you want an invitation, send me a DM.

Work by Gloria Oyarzabal Lodge, 1 of 7 artists showing #AtWork on Saturday, January 27th, 6 PM, at the Kia Showroom.
.
Gloria’s project in Lagos, titled “African woman no go ‘gree”, reviews the vernacular representation of the African woman. She takes into account factors such as the imaginary, the influences of Victorian society, of the models introduced through the education of elites in Christian colleges and of feminist studies made in Africa under a Western feminist perspective.

MELEKO MOKOGOSI, ‘Pax Kaffraria project’.
.
.
“My work aims to interrogate narrative tropes and the fundamental models for the inscription and transmission of history along side established European notions of representation. I use the conventions of history painting and cinema to create large-scale installations, which are crafted through years of research that involves extensive travel, data collection, photography, and writing. Through Pax Kaffraria (2010-present), I propose that national identification is a vital force that grounds everything from our speech patterns to the tastes we prefer our tongues to enjoy. Hence nationalism is not entirely about sovereignty or nation-state politics, rather it is aligned with the texture of fantasy and desire, and the confluence of affect in language. Thus the work examines the rise and lure of globalization and trans-nationalism, and how these are continuously sabotaged by the great advance of nationalism and xenophobia in regions such as Germany, the United States, and South Africa.” - Artist
.
Meleko Mokgosi makes figurative paintings that fit together to form “chapters” in large installations that suggest stories or narratives. Pax Kaffraria depicts the history of a fictional African nation- a complex and enigmatic response to the southern African postcolonial experience, with special focus on the rise of African nationalist movements since the late 1950s. It features founding myths and legends of national triumph. An agrarian culture develops into an industrial power and modern society.

The first time I saw « Flowers II » at @154artfair , I could barely bring myself to look. Feeling like a « voyeur » . Shocked, horrified to see a young body violated again (by the excision) and again (by the gaze of the photographer’s and mine). The artist Owanto is committed to raising issues about FGM and broadly « to create change through contemporary art » as she explained in an interview by @artafrica_mag . A must read.

Kenyan born artist Kaloki Nyamai (b. 1985) explores the parallels between the past and the present through richly-layered, multimedia works. Drawing heavily on the stories of the Kamba community narrated to him by his grandmother, Nyamai explores how history and identity are intertwined and how this has informed the identities of people living in present day, post-colonial Kenya. At the core of his practice, Nyamai battles with what it means to be black in white spaces and the textured surfaces of his works reflect this struggle in their very construction. The paint is laid on heavily and becomes scarred with cracks as it dries and the additional layers of ripped canvas that are pasted onto the original surface create a rich palimpsest of colour and texture. Another recurring element in Nyamai’s work are the rectangular shapes that surround his subjects implying their isolation and entrapment. These recurring formal elements in his work highlight his interest in the repetitive nature of human behavior, and through his work Nyamai questions the behaviors of people in post-colonial societies by positioning these difficult questions within the constructs of a skewed power dynamic. .

Buhlebezwe Siwani is a 'Sangoma', a traditional healer endowed with power of divination, a spiritual dimension that nurtures her work. She uses her own body for her installations, performances, photographs and video. 'Batsho Bancama' (And they gave up) is a life-size mould of her body made of soap. This installation is also composed of basins refering to the washing of the girls, publicly performed in the black community and is part of the female rites of passage. Siwani will participate in the exhibition at the Kunsthal Kade in Amersfoort. Photo taken at the Fondation Louis Vuitton ART/AFRIQUE exhibition in Paris.

MALALA ANDRIALAVIDRAZANA, ‘Figures 1889, Planisfero, from the Figures series’, 2015. ultra-chrome pigment print on hahnemĂŒhle photo rag ultra smooth.
.
.
Malala Andrialavidrazana is a contemporary visual artist with a background in architecture. Interested in the notions of barriers and interactions within cross-cultural contexts, her work investigates both private spaces and global issues to explore social imaginaries, primarily through the photographic medium.
With a subtle hint of anthropological fieldwork, examining the in-between space in a multitude of ‘heres’ and ‘nows’, Andrialavidrazana’s visual compositions open up the possibility of alternative storytelling.
Her ongoing series “Figures”, negotiates a diverse range of material - atlases, bank notes, album covers from her youth, to challenge modes of visualizing the world. Culminating in photo montages, Figures reveals the fault lines of knowledge production, conveying our current condition as one gripped by global capitalism.

Sanu Da Zuwa by Musah Swallah, A Solo Exhibition at Calabar Gallery opens this Friday, 6:30pm

Sanu Da Zuwa means welcome in Hausa, a common language spoken in West Africa. It is a phrase I have become very familiar with throughout my life. In Nima, where I was born and raised, whenever a new visitor enters the community, they are met with a warm welcome. In return, the visitor welcomes their companions to their life and shares treasures with the newly made friends.

Baba Musah Swallah is a professional artist born and raised in the densely populated community of Nima in the heart of Accra, Ghana. His painting, sculpture, and mixed media works render stories that reflect everyday life. In his current series, Musah paints on repurposed wooden panels and uses glass, plastic bottles, pieces of cloth, and other recycled materials. His works speak to youth aspirations, urban environments, and the phenomena of globalization.

Title : My Sunshine has come
Acrylic on canvas, 2006

Twelve years on since I did this painting and I find myself constantly falling back to its message of hope especially now more than ever. What is the meaning of life? What is life worth? In a world where there is so much anguish, human displacement, hunger and death, one is constantly drawn to question life and it's purpose. Somewhere in Syria, kids as young as five or younger are roaming the streets scavenging garbage bins and left at the mercy of this ruthless world. Fathers killed and mothers kidnapped for sexual slavery. What is the meaning of life and how does one rationalize this cruel existence to victims like these? I don't know the meaning of life, if there is one. Sometimes I wonder if life on earth isn't some ancient reality show designed for the amusement of cosmic beings. I don't know. I just know that if you are still breathing, perhaps your life is not over. It is cruel even to tell certain people to be hopeful. But it has to be said because life is truly unpredictable. #Repost  @ucheedochie (@get_repost) ・・・ Title : My Sunshine has come Acrylic on canvas, 2006 Twelve years on since I did this painting and I find myself constantly falling back to its message of hope especially now more than ever. Fortunes can and do change. So be hopeful. Be hopeful. #hope  #migrants  #survival  #life  #lifequotes  #art  #contemporaryafricanart  #africanartist  #africanart  #painting  #contemporaryart  #ucheedochieart

MALALA ANDRIALAVIDRAZANA, ‘Figures 1838, Atlas ElĂ©mentaire, from the Figures series’, 2015. ultra-chrome pigment print on hahnemĂŒhle photo rag ultra smooth.
.

#behindthescenes look at #ghadaamer and #rezafarkhondeh’s new exhibition, ‘Love is a Difficult Blue’, opening tonight 6pm @goodman_gallery #capetown. Playfully challenging stereotypes in their collaborative works, which see them masterfully moving from ink to acrylic and embroidery in their sensual renderings.
