I'm trying out a few artsy Instagram functions with my iPhone's landscape feature. It's kinda fun. It reminds me of glitch art. This is a b&w mirror image of the CDT in a particularly dense tree lined section. The trail traverses a lot of recent and future tree harvest plantations, and the newly planted pines and furs not only provide nice shade but seemingly cool glitchy art. Last night it was hot, and I had to wake up and dig out my bag liner to use as a sheet. I kicked off my quilt and afterwards slept much better. The weather in Montana has been much warmer than usual during this time of the year. In Butte the waitress at the diner mentioned to me it's usually around 70s days and 40s nights, but there's a late summer heat wave for the next week. I'm okay with it. I like waking up early and not having to put on my cold weather gear. Yesterday and today I didn't see a single person. This is probably the first time that's happened since the Great Divide Basin in WY, and to be honest it was nice. I really enjoy being out in the woods alone. However, a nice relaxing and warm day of hiking soon turned exciting in the afternoon. Around 2 pm I accidentally spooked a black bear sow and her three cubs. The cubs were young, which surprised me because of how late it is in the season, and they immediately climbed up the nearest trees. I instantly froze at the sight of climbing cubs, and sure enough the mother came charging towards me from right of the trail. The forest is dense in this particular section, and it took her a few seconds to navigate the blowdowns allowing me to get my bear spray ready. I turned to face her and she charged and then made a sharp right and ran up the trail. My heart rate was up, but it happened so fast I didn't really have time to be afraid and was just prepared to defend myself. It wasn't until I yelled loudly and started hiking down the trail that I really processed what had just happened. The rest of the day was uneventful, and I made decent time to put me within 9 miles of Helena tomorrow. Song of the Day: America's Son by Air Review. PodCast of the Day: Terrible, Thanks for Asking.
