The smaller of our two 2017 Walla Walla Valley 2-Row barley fields. @barleyworld's Full Pint variety, grown by H.T. Rea Farming. Dry-farmed and Salmon-Safe Certified. // Shallower parts of this 11 acre field dealt with a bit more drought stress than we would have liked, which did effect grain fill in those areas. Still, there are sizeable tracts of great looking barley with a hardy work ethic. Stay tuned for updates on harvest and quality!
Our 2017 Athena 2-Row is in its final stretch on the road to harvest. 85 acres of dry-farmed and Salmon-Safe certified Genie barley, grown with pride by Bob Johns and Chris Williams of Johns Ranch. There's a lot of primo barley out here. // For some context... This year's extremely late seeding pushed the crop's maturation uncomfortably far into PNW summer drought conditions. The result was a heavy reliance on soil moisture reserves during grain fill, which did stress the barley. Our hope is that the added stress offers interesting flavors that are unique to 2017 Athena, and systematically excluded in irrigated malting barley production. We'll also have some thin, underdeveloped kernels to screen out between harvest and malting, which will make for some excellent livestock feed.
@washington_university_ / @sustainableseedsystemslab hosted a barley field day last Friday to show new barely varieties being trialed for malting! It's so exciting to see researchers, farmers, maltsters and brewers coming together!
After the field tour we went for a beer and toured @moscowbrewing and @hunga_dung.
It was great to see so many farmers from the Palouse including @josephsgrainery, @mjwgraininc and @palouseheritage.
We can't wait to work with more farmers and see new varieties of barley make their way into local beers.
History!! Who's ready?? The first batch of Oklahoma grown Malt Barley is in the steep tank! In approximately 36 hours we will move to the germination vessel. The first variety out will be Endeavor, followed by Wintmalt on the next turn. #craftmalt#graintoglass#knowyourfarmer#local
@sustainableseedsystemslab barley breeder Kevin Murphy, @lincfoods CEO and @palousepint maltster Joel Williamson, and Mainstem's Phil Neumann talk malting barley at WSU's "Know Barley Know Beer" annual field day. A wonderful time... thanks for hosting, Kevin! // 📸: Bill Myers of @josephsgrainery
We enjoyed our evening at Inland Northwest Bank's Open House last night. Thank you for featuring Joseph's Grainery and pouring beers made with @palousepint #craftmalt : @blacklabelbc and @bellwetherbrewing
Pre-harvest grain bin cleaning. Bob Lick of La Grande hauls our remaining 79 tons of 2016 Athena 2-Row out of storage at the Johns Ranch and into our Walla Walla warehouse. Seth & Mark Small of @smallsfamilyfarm lend a welcomed hand and expertise. // One of the most impressive parts of family agriculture is the willingness of successful business owners to remain engaged in the day-to-day dirty work. It's a very honest and prideful dynamic.

Amanda, from @greatbeeradventure is brewing beers around the state for her event @beergeekretreat and today she showed up at @norwaybrewingco and they surprised her with a 3-part brew (it ended up in three different spots for fermentation: a stainless steel vessel, a huge barrel and a tiny 5 gallon carboy.) They used 500lbs of our malt!!!!
Also: Wait till you hear about the amazing food cycle Norway Brewing has going up there!!! More details soon.
