@themikestutz and Laurel join @sisterpersister and a new friend at the #NoMuslimBanEver rally and match last weekend. It was a great crowd of people dedicated to fighting racism and xenophobia. A very good job done by organizers at @cairlosangeles keeping things peaceful and educating the public about a subject that for many is a matter of life and death. #NoBanNoWall
Thrilled to have met and bounced ideas around with great #womensmarch organizers @sarahsophief and @paolamendoza in a #creativeresistance workshop they held today, the final day of the #brooklynconference . We worked to figure out how to bend the future's paths towards justice and I brought these #imaginejustice#nyclightbrigade signs in hopes that they could perhaps serve as metaphoric light bulbs above our heads as the ideas flowed.
Oh this woman. We nicknamed her #FartingBetty . She claimed she was spreading a message of "coming together" while disrupting the heartfelt, brave speeches at the #NoMuslimBanEver march. Farting Betty would brainlessly blurt out trite responses and phrases like "all lives matter" at inopportune times, while people whose lives have been upended continued with their stories with dignity. Did she even hear what was being said? She didn't seem particularly self-aware on any level, so @theusefulidiots, at the request of organizers, stood on either side of her to demonstrate how ugly orange fever can be. 👉🏼😡👈🏼 #NoBanNoWall#NoMuslimBan#powertothepeople (📷 by @sisterpersister.)

I am SO DAMN EXCITED for @raynafahey's new book #reallycrossstitch being published soon! Preordered about a month ago from @readingsbooks and I can't wait for it to land! ->> Inspired by the banners and signs at recent marches around the world, Really Cross Stitch takes all that anger, outrage and protest and puts it inside a pretty, decorative border. Along with some snarky commentary and general annoyance.
Featuring more than 40 truly original cross stitch designs, the book also contains instructions on techniques for new stitchers.
Stitching for public protest is not new. First-wave feminists in the US and in Britain used needlework in their demonstrations and public protest lectures during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Needlework and other handcrafts, however, declined throughout the twentieth century, with second-wave feminists arguing against "the oppression of the needle". In the 21st century however there has been a steep resurgence and many are turning to crafting, especially needlework, as an activist strategy. In Knitting for Good, feminist Betsy Greer makes this point strongly when she proclaims, "I think every act of making is an act of revolution. #feminist#feminism#crossstitch#craftivism#craftivist#creativeresistance
This is a beautiful shot by #MarkRalston . He photographs us at various events fairly consistently yet we've never met him. If you ever see this, Mark, we love your work and are so thankful that your images provide such a wonderful opportunity for thoughtful reflection. The minute I got back from Boston and I continued to mobilize my students! Mobilized them to aim to create more artistically inclusive spaces so that their work can resonate with others. To create an activated dialogue with their art. I got tired of being in front of a Mac computer screen all day so I drove them mad for 4 weeks and challenged them to reflect on the madness that continues to unfold around them. Here are just a few images of what my amazing collective of budding street artists have been installing this past week! To mobilize students who may not think they possess the agency to do so is what I strive for every semester.
My Intro to Digital Art class has been wheat-pasting paper monuments all over the DMV & Bmore! The challenge was to produce a creative response that highlighted the perils of social inequity, divisiveness, racial injustice, immigration, inequality, and much more that continues to affect my group of students everyday. With monuments making their way down what can and should replace them? Ask a

@themikestutz and Laurel at the third and final stop of the inspiring #NoMuslimBanEver march in Los Angeles last weekend. Listening to speakers telling harrowing stories of betrayal by who they thought were their fellow countrymen and women here in the U.S. Many of those affected by the various travel bans are U.S. citizens with families that have been torn apart by the Trump administration's racism. There is a fever out there, spreading from person to person, infecting people with xenophobia, small-mindedness, and bigotry. #NoBanNoWall#NoBanNoWallNoRaids#dissentispatriotic (📷 by @sisterpersister.)
The Orange appear again, this time at the #NoMuslimBanEver rally. Modeled after the Blue Men each orange fever sufferer has a unique personality. Here @maxually, in the middle, channels that guy in your office who thinks he's not really racist but always says things like "but you gotta admit..." No, we don't 'gotta admit' anything. #NoBaNoWall#NeverAgain
Concerned constituents in CA-25 spoke up this weekend regarding their republican Congressman, @repsteveknight, who voted to take away their healthcare in May. @repsteveknight was too chicken to face his constituents, so neighboring Congressman @reptedlieu was invited to hold a townhall in Knight's district to answer questions and concerns about the future of healthcare. Thank you, @reptedlieu, for representing and supporting your fellow Californians. You are a true #AmericanHero and we love you! ✊🏽🇺🇸🎤 #LikeABoss#TheResistance#thisiswhatdemocracylookslike
"I believe in the First Amendment. I will fight to the death to protect your right...to say stupid things." -- @reptedlieu to the MAGA trolls in the audience. ✊🏽🇺🇸🎤 #LikeABoss#AmericanHero#TheResistance
Yesterday, @reptedlieu held a townhall in Republican @repsteveknight'a district to talk about healthcare. Why did Rep. Lieu talk to Knight's constituents instead of Knight himself? Because Knight refused to hold a townhall to discuss why he voted to take healthcare away from 30 million Americans. Thank you, Congressman Lieu, for caring about your fellow Californians and concerned neighbors. Thank you for speaking truth to power and being a vocal and brave part of #TheResistance . ✊🏽🇺🇸🎤 #protectourcare#savetheACA#AmericanHero#LikeABoss
This is from an @latimes (photographer Scott Smeltzer) article on our protest of professional homophobe and Trump lackey @vp Pence. Why do we protest when we can't see him? Because thousands drove by in those hours. We must bear witness to the wrongs being done by our alleged leaders. Even if they refuse to hear us. Especially if they refuse to hear us. We thought General Bullshitski and KGB Officer Svetlana were just the ones to send the message. #VPPence#theresistance#TakeAKnee#TheRussians#russiagate
Here we are with #ChrisKluwe , former NFL player and highly motivated activist. He has taken strong stands on everything from LGBTQ issues to gamer-gate. If you don't know him, look him up. Very good guy who lost his job in the NFL (proved in court) because he was willing to fight for the rights of others. #TakeAKnee#Russiagate#theresistance
This is what democracy (sadly) looks like. Right behind us are dozens of uniformed officers, plain clothes detectives and secret service. They have well over a dozen cop cars and SS SUVs. All between us and the man we'd like to communicate with -- @vp Pence. They were all pleasant to us. But Pence was never closer than a quarter mile away. #VPPence#theresistance#TakeAKnee#TheRussians#russiagate
I'm teaching a #craftivism and #crossstitch class at @lanewaylearning on the 23rd of oct! Come learn with me! Bookings via #LanewayLearning profile link ...
Wish you knew how to cross stitch? Don’t know what craftivism is or want to know more about it?
In this hands-on workshop we’ll look at the growing worldwide craftivism movement. Then, we’ll learn the basics of cross stitch and make our own craftivist designs!
We’ll learn about various projects that employ different types of crafts to spread their message. From anti-war cross stitch protests to personalising your urban environment via sneaky guerrilla knitting, from raising awareness about the gender pay gap through baking to guerrilla mosaics protesting the death penalty in the US. Craft can, and has, been utalised for almost every cause.
What will we cover?
This class will explore the various ways people have used their chosen craft to spread their message. Plus, learn how you can promote causes you believe in through your favourite craft! You’ll be guided through the process of designing and making your own small craftivist cross stitch on a cause of your choice.
If you can read a map or play Battleships, you can cross stitch. If you have a cause you’re passionate about, you can be a craftivist! “Craftivism is the practice of engaged creativity, especially regarding political or social causes. By using their creative energy to help make the world a better place, craftivists help bring about positive change via personalized activism. Craftivism allows practitioners to customize their particular skills to address particular causes.” – @craftivista .. #craftivism#craftivist#creativeresistance#resist#persist#artactivism
Sometimes your application to an exhibit is not selected, sometimes it is, other times it makes it to the final round of selection but is ultimately refused/doesn't work out, and other times you don't even apply and your work is selected. Always learning! I'm happy to announce that a sweet librarian got in touch with me to convey that A Queer Cousin Story zine is part of an exhibit called “Zines as Creative Resistance,” curated by the Graduate Center Library (CUNY). Look at us, Queer cousins @sahar_shafqat and @spandya21😉. I hope our story continues to be part of other QTPOC stories of resilience, love, and justice. If you're in NYC now until January 2018, and you're interested in zines, more information on the exhibit and accompanying events is in my profile link. Info on my website soon. Also, I think I want to be a librarian....
The greatest act of protest we can engage in right now is sharing laughter and friendship and love. There are those out there who want us to give in to hatred, anxiety and depression. Fight back with your humanity. #resist#creativeresistance @theusefulidiots
READY TO RISE?
ONE BILLION RISING expands its theme of REVOLUTION and SOLIDARITY this year! OBR has become a movement unto itself, taking activism out of the theater and into the streets, front and center.
As neoliberal policies and rapacious capitalism have become the engine of most governments, bringing profound consequences for the working class and marginalized sectors, it is more important than ever to be in solidarity with women on the frontlines. Suffering has reached new heights this year, and OBR is seeing a new, dynamic and radical militancy and vibrancy that is opposing and rising against such repression and oppression.
