The Curlywurly game [ blog post]
*
*
*

Today, I am fizzing with excitement because Joe is coming home! I haven’t seen him for almost two weeks.
He’s been in Germany for two weeks, and then when he came home at the weekend, I was up north in Sunderland presenting at my friend Dom’s brilliant Poodle to Pitbull Pet Business Bootcamp.

So we’ve been like inept relay runners missing the tag.
But while he was home at the weekend, Joe created a game for me.
It’s a brilliant game, because each day I get rewarded with a Curlywurly (a British chocolate bar from the 1980s (not an out of date chocolate bar, a relic of my childhood) a living fossil chocolate, if you will)

The game is:
Find the Curlywurly!
If you follow me on Facebook and Instagram, you’ll have seen the ingenius hiding places he came up with. I have one left to find, and something tells me it’s going to be tricky…
It’s been really good fun, and it’s lessened the amount I miss him. A bit.
And it got me thinking about keeping your customers occupied. See, not that I’d forget about him at all ever, but hiding the Curlywurlys kept Joe at the top of my mind when I was feeling a bit lonely in the evenings.
It was a little slice of Joe humour and thoughtfulness from afar.
How often do you keep in touch with your customers and clients and prospects?

The scariest thing in the world [ blog post]
*
*
*

I know what you’re afraid of.
It’s the same thing I’m afraid of. The same thing every-bloody-body is afraid of.

You’re afraid of not knowing. Not knowing what comes next.
Not knowing what’ll happen if you do this thing or that thing.
Not knowing whether hiring this writer or that web designer is the right decision.
Not knowing enough about the thing you’re about to spend money on.
And I have the answer.
Study it.
Even if you’re not going to do it yourself.
You can never know too much, and the more you know, the less scary it is.

Smash the monster under your bed [ blog post]
*
*
*

You know when you were little and there was a monster in your bedroom?
You’d hide under the covers — because somehow your bedcovers have magical powers — and everything would be alright.

Okay, you couldn't really breathe and it got so hot you thought you might explode, but the monster couldn't get you.

Mostly, I don't hide under the bed from actual monsters anymore (unless I've just watched a scary film). These days, the monster is the sheer volume of stuff I have to do tomorrow and sometimes the best way to deal with it seems to be to hide under the covers.

Amiright?

Because no matter how much some of us might look like we have our shit together, let me tell you it's not like that all the time.

I've gone from scattered shit all over the place all the time, to mostly under control with a semi-regular let's stay in bed today day.

So I thought I'd share with you what I do when I feel like hiding under the covers.

I make a list! * *

Stuck in a donkey rut [ blog post]
*
*
*

I’m stuck in a donkey rut.
Now I’ve written it, it sounds a bit rude… but it’s not.
It’s just… I’ve made loads of progress with my cartooning skills, but I’m stuck. On Derek the Donkey.

Don’t get me wrong: I love Derek. He’s completely ace.
But I don’t just want to be a one-donkey cartoonist. I want a small set of characters, and I want to be able to create gags and stories.
I want really simple characters, too — not massively overcomplicated ones that take ages to draw, like I usually come up with.
So, what’s the answer?
I need to force myself out of my donkey rut, and the best way to do that is to look outside my own skull, my own sketchbooks, and my own way of doing things. I need to dive back into the cartooning group and start gathering inspiration.
Then I need a kick up the bum to act.
How about you? Are you stuck in a rut with anything at the moment? Hit reply and tell me what it is… * *

You have an egg hanging out of your bum [ blog post]
*
*
*

Have you ever seen a chicken running around with a half-laid egg hanging out of its bum? Chasing after a piece of toast?
I have, at my friend’s house.
And it reminded me of you… but don’t take offence, because it also reminded me of me.
Most of us are starters, not finishers. We’re business owners, so we’re easily excited and enthused by new ideas and big plans and the next shiny thing — but when it comes to finishing what we started?
We’re like chickens running around with a half-laid business egg hanging out of our backsides. Someone comes along with a delicious piece of tactical toast, and we abandon our half-laid egg mission.
It’s what happens when we get panicky and unfocused and lose sight of our goal. It’s what happens when we get overwhelmed and the weight of Things To Do start pressing down on us.
Those bright shiny objects, those cure-all magic beans being offered by all those experts… they start to look pretty tempting.
After all, this is hard work. It’s uncomfortable. And it’s exhausting.
But if you can just stick with it, finish what you started, you’ll be in the tiny, successful minority. But it takes a lot of will to do that.
So when someone comes along and offers you a magic pill that’ll easily put 6 figures in your pocket fast, it’s exciting.
The problem is, though, it’s just another distraction. Just another piece of toast. * *

Maybe they're right about you [ blog post]
*
*
* “Your little business looks like fun, but when are you going to get a real job?”
The words twist in your gut, because secretly, you’ve asked yourself the same question, haven’t you?
All those sideways looks from well-meaning friends and family, worrying that you won’t make it, wondering what you’re doing and why you don’t just settle for a nice, safe, regular income like the rest of them.
And all the while, deep down, you’re wondering if they might be right.
Maybe you can’t do this.
Maybe you’re not cut out to run a business.
Maybe it will all go tits up and you’ll look stupid and they’ll all be right.
Worst of all, you feel like a freeloader because you’re not the one bringing in all the cashmoney. And although your partner doesn’t come right out and say it, you can feel it: when are you going to get a real job?
Some days… it’s tempting.
Nine-to-five.
Paycheck at the end of the month.
Bills paid.
Ticking along.
Safe.
But inside, something is screaming at you. Shuddering back from taking that nice safe paycheck and making money to line The Boss’s pockets. Shrinking from the gilded bars that’ll cage you in a “proper job”.
Because that’s why you started this business, isn’t it? * *

YOUR DIRTY LITTLE SECRET LAID BARE
*
*
“God, I’m such an idiot.” “Why am I so crap at this?” “I’m so clumsy.” “I’m such a muppet!” “Moron!” You’d never speak to anyone else this way, would you? So why do you think it’s okay to speak to yourself that way?

Not so long ago, I woke up actually thinking to myself, “I’m a fucking idiot.” * *

Scared to death but doing it anyway.

See that person hiding in the corner at a party, working up the nerve to talk to someone?

That's me, that is.

See that person putting her foot into her mouth, followed by her entire leg?

That's me, that is.

Socially awkward should be my middle name.

I'm telling you this because it occurred to me this morning you might think all this comes easily to me. I email every day. I podcast every week. I get in touch with strangers and ask them to come on my show, or talk to me, or generally do something fun together.

I stand in front of a roomful of business owners and tell tall tales and teach them stuff -- and it's fun.

I get up on stage and perform on trapeze in front of hundreds of people -- and I bloody love it.

Every time I go out to talk to strangers, or perform in front of them, I spend two days fretting. Then I spend half an hour beforehand either barfing or thinking about barfing... 👆👆click link in bio to keep reading... .

Only giant progress will do - right? [new blog post]
*
*
* “I nearly didn’t post this because I’m so frustrated.”
That’s what a pole-dancing friend of mine said on Instagram this morning.
She’s doing a bridge a day, so she can improve her backbend flexibility, and she’s posting progress photos on Instagram.
But today she felt like she’d made no progress at all. In fact, she felt like she was going backwards, because she couldn’t see a difference between today’s photo and one from a week ago.
I get it. Oh boy do I get it.
In pole and circus, in cartooning, and definitely in business.
We’re impatient creatures, and we want to see big progress NOW. It doesn’t help when we’re surrounded by people all posting their “after” lives. That’s the downside of following people who are further along than you: we’re always looking forward and upwards, and reaching further ourselves.
And that’s a good thing. We should be doing that.
But it’s super important to take time out to stop, and reflect, and look at how far we’ve come.
At the start, that’s tough, because we’ve not come far – and that’s going to be the test of your will to succeed.
At the start, after the initial enthusiasm has worn off, that’s when you’ll get frustrated and want to give up.
Don’t.
Because, as I’ve said before, progress is made in tiny beetle steps. * *

Are you a rock? Then get moving! [new blog post]
*
*
*

Tick. Tick. Tick.
Tick. Tick.
Tick.
Okay, now it’s glaring at me. The blank piece of paper.

It’s actually emanating waves of malice at me, because I can’t squeeze words out of my eyeballs and onto the page right now.
So what did I do?
I closed my eyes and listened. And heard the clock.
And wrote down what it said to me.
Because writers write, even when the words won’t come.
Sitting there and waiting for inspiration to strike will lead to starvation and cramp. Probably not in that order.
But just getting on with it gets you started.
This goes for anything in business or in life: sitting there worrying about getting started is always far worse than actually getting started, because we have this magnificent ability to build up little hitches into giant horrific mountains that look totally overwhelming.
Then, when we grit our teeth and just start, we realise they’re not giant horrific mountains after all.
They’re just little bumps we can step over. * *

Accidental money launderer – oops [new blog post]
*
*
*

The other day, I did a simple little thing. For the longest time, I had the stupidest business name. It's six words long with 90 characters.
So I just changed the name. Five minutes online and a few quid -- sorted. Simples. Hurrah!
Apparently it was like lobbing a hand grenade into an accountant's palace... and the blast radius has just reached me.
Honestly, this is why I should be kept away from sharp objects.
In all seriousness, though, this is why we should not try to do everything ourselves. Even the tiny little things that are super easy and super simple...
Because my little "I'll just do this, no need to bother my accounting superheroes" escapade created hours of work for them to clear up my mess.
Which they are doing because they are wonderful, kind, patient people.
I simply didn't engage my brain long enough to think about what that company name is linked to: my bank account, HMRC, payroll, PayPal, Stripe, my email software, all my invoices, EVERYTHING IN THE BLOODY WORLD.
Of course, now they've sat me down and gently chastised and mocked me and pointed it out, it's obvious.
(And if you're sitting there shaking your head and rolling your eyes at me, that's fair enough -- but also, you know, I stick my tongue out at you because we all do this stupid stuff every now and then.)
The great thing is, though, I have grownups to look after me and help me clear up the mess.
If I hadn't?
I'd be spending probably the next two days frantically trying to stop being a money launderer and avoiding big scary women in jail.
So my lesson for today is: if you're doing your own accounts, stop it. Stop it right now.
Ain't nobody got time for that. * *

Judge me baby one more time [new blog post] *
*
*

Scrolling through a Facebook networking group yesterday, I saw something that made me facepalm my glasses off my face and onto the floor.
Some guy asked: “Do you judge people by the car they drive?” And what followed was the most magnificent virtue-signalling bullshit I’ve seen in quite some time.
(Virtue-signalling, if you didn’t know, is “the action or practice of publicly expressing opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one’s good character or the moral correctness of one’s position on a particular issue”. It’s commonly used by douchebags to make themselves look good, often at the expense of others, and usually dishonestly. You’ll never find out what a virtue-signaller really thinks, because it’ll depend on whom they’re talking to.)
Buried within the virtue-signalling were two or three honest replies, along the lines of, “Yes, I do judge people by the car they drive.”
But the majority was snowflakes whining about the awful state of humanity, and how anyone who judges anyone based on what car they drive is a heinous human being.
The loudest shouter of all was someone who’d studied psychology, which I found mildly hilarious… but also troubling, because this individual has set himself up as a “coach” and will be proclaiming himself an expert.
Whatevs — this just strengthens my call for you to do your due diligence before signing up for any coaching or training.
Anyway, my point is this: we all make snap judgements all the time.
All the time. * *

All the time. * * Click link in the bio to keep reading 👆👆👆👆 #smallbusiness  #marketing  #entrepreneur  #cartooning  #cartoonaday  #davincicartooning  #marketingtips  #marketingonline  #entrepreneurtips
Stop touching your customers inappropriately [new blog post] *
*
*

Are you touching your customers inappropriately?
ARE YOU?

Let me ask you a question. What would your reaction be if a potential date walked in to meet you, said hello, then grabbed your boobs? (Or your boy bits, if you’re boobily challenged)

You’d be outraged, right? You’d back away fast? Possibly call the police?

Of course.

So why are you grabbing your customers by the intimate danglies?

I only ask because this is what most businesses do.

They pile in, say hi, then yell about how they’ve got the answer to your problem and all you have to do is BUY MY STUFF NAAAAOOOW!

It’s a bit of a turnoff.

Aggressive, even. * *

Why "never work for free" is crappy advice [new blog post] *
*
* "Oh woe is me, the whole world is against me, I'm not successful because Reasons, woe, woe, woe..." ^^ that's pretty much what I saw on a Twitter feed this morning.

So today's rant is twofold.

Let's start with a wholly erroneous and damaging piece of advice shoved out at new freelancers everywhere: Never work for free! Rule 1

I have worked for free before. When I was starting out, untried, untested, and with no real clue what I was doing.

I've sent work on spec, and then got paying gigs from it.

Would I work for free now? No, but I have no need to do so. Telling new copywriters NEVER WORK FOR FREE OMG DOOM is idiotic and damaging.

Here's a top tip if you're a new creative -- or a new anybody -- find someone you really want to work with. Someone at the top of their game. And offer to do your absolute best work for them. If they don't like it or want it, no harm, no foul (you now have a portfolio piece). But if it makes them money -- they pay you.

You'll be surprised how often this works. And if you do well, they will come back for more.

The bottom line is, if you've been running a freelance business for a good while and you're still fighting off offers of "exposure", that's your fault. But that's a good thing, because it means it's in your power to change it... * *

Gin for lunch is not a business plan [new blog post]
*
*
*

I see you.
Right now.
Doing something you know you probably shouldn't be...
Whether that's eating chocolate chip cookies for breakfast (ahem), working in your pyjamas, drinking gin at lunchtime (kidding), or skipping lunch entirely.
Because that's what happens we run our businesses from home, right?
We fall into baaaaaaaad habits because we think nobody can see us.
Well, I see you. And I see me. And I worry, just a bit, because looking after ourselves isn't just a good idea -- it's bloody essential if we want to get the best out of ourselves and be more productive and have more time off.
It's essential if we want to be healthy, and full of energy and enthusiasm.
So here's today's top tip, ahead of the weekend.
Spend an hour or so planning next week's meals. What will you have for breakfast, for lunch, for tea?
Then go shopping and get your provisions. * *

New ways to take people's money [new blog post]
*
*
*

Overheard in a Facebook group for marketers: "In many marketing roles you're inevitably trying to find new ways to take people's money, but I reckon there's a difference between marketing a product you believe has some benefit to the customer, and outright lying." Well yes, but let's address that first part first.

I am never trying to find new ways to take people's money.

And nor should you be.

That whole attitude screams a lack of respect for the customer -- for human people -- a lack of respect I am seeing bandied around more and more on social media.

When did it become cool to yell that all clients and customers are idiots and a pain in the arse?

When was it suddenly okay to shriek FIRE THE CLIENT! every time there's a miscommunication?

Because let me have a little rant of my own, and not just about copywriters and marketers, but about all business owners... If your whole ethos is about "trying to take people's money", you're coming at it all wrong. * *

It's time to engage f*ck it mode [new blog post] *
*
*

When everything around you is burning to the ground, it’s time to engage FUCK IT mode.

You could be one of those people who wails and gnashes their teeth and gets out the blamethrower…

Or you could be like ma sista from another mista, Misty — who just blinks a couple of times then flicks the let’s do this shit switch.

There’ll be t-shirts (for real). Because we are people who get shit done.

Sometimes, disaster is a catalyst for change. Not huge, sweeping changes… those small but significant actions like writing that report instead of talking about writing it.

Finding that event venue rather than talking about it.

Putting on that marketing extravaganza with costumes and goats and fun and a goddam fine dining torture chamber… rather than just talking about it.

Thinking a little bit bigger than usual… then getting it done, and screw the difficulties.

So when you feel like your world is crashing round around your ears — because we’ve all been there before and will be again — take a moment to process it.

Blink and breathe.

The no.1 reason you're not making progress [new blog post] *
*
*

Wanna know the number one reason you’re struggling to make progress?

The myth of greener grass.

I’m pretty sure I’m right, because I’ve fallen for the myth of greener grass myself, back in the day.

Let me tell you a true story about a business owner named Fred. (His name’s not really Fred, but I’m protecting the guilty.) Fred joined my Superheroes a few months ago. He had his Superheroes kit, took me up on a complimentary Borrow My Brain session, received two newsletters packed with lessons and specific instructions showing him how to do stuff, and had access to hours and hours of critiques and phone classes on a range of topics.

He very carefully stayed for two months, then became the first person ever to take me up on my two months guarantee: If you don’t think this is the place for you, I’ll refund your two months’ membership.

His reason: “I feel at this time I need a little more in the way of “handholding” with the marketing etc side of things.” I rolled my eyes so hard I saw the inside of the back of my head, because not once did Fred ever ask a question in the group or send me anything for critique. Nor did he take any action on the Borrow My Brain consultation.

Then I found out Fred was also a member of another membership group… and another. *

This has been 10 years in the making [new blog post] *
*
*

Sometimes you just need to bring out the hornèd hands and yell

YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Yesterday was one of those days, because after more than 10 years of pole dancing I finally managed to nail KNEES:

Why has it taken me 10 years? Partly because it bloody hurts, and partly because sometimes it just takes ages to get where you want to be.

When we look around at what people are doing with their lives and businesses on social media, we only see the end result, often. We see what they want us to see. And I can understand that — humans get embarrassed when our failings are out there for all to see.

But rest assured, our failings are out there. Some more hidden than others.

We don’t see the progress, just the result.

Which is a problem when we’re working hard to build our own businesses, right? We see other people out there at the top of their tree, raking in the cash and spending all day on the beach or something — and we compare ourselves to them, and wonder why we’re still grafting five days a week, 10 hours a day (or more). Why isn’t it all happening now? *

One-way ticket out of miseryville [new blog post]
*
*
*

Eyes down, arm curled around your exam paper, shielding your hastily scribbled answers from prying eyes.

Remember those days at school?

Doing tests, and jealously guarding your answers from your neighbour... Gathering everything into you so nobody else can see... We think we leave those days behind us, BUT -- Do you do that with your business?

Most business owners do -- at least at first. I did. I'd jealously guard my clients and my fees and everything I did, terrified that someone would come along and take it all off me.

Scared they'd take a slice of what's mine.

Because it feels like there's never enough to go around.

Right?

Wrong.

Because although it feels like that, it's not how the world is.

There's plenty to go around.

Now? I'm always referring potential clients to my "competitors", because they're a better fit, or they offer something specific I don't, or because I simply don't have availability.

As one of my Superheroes has realised: *

Motivated by death-defying penguins [new blog post]
*
*
*

It’s funny what can motivate you to get stuff done.

Despite what people close to me think, I really struggle to get started sometimes. There’s resistance, a lack of clarity, and sometimes it’s just plain tough to get going.

So I’m always on the alert for something that kicks me up the arse, and when I find it, I’ll milk it for as long as I can.

Most recently, the thing that kicked me up the arse has been sobbing brokenheartedly at penguins.

Joe and I are watching Planet Earth II, and the other day we were watching the penguins struggling for survival on Zavodovski Island — one of the most hostile places on Earth.

The seas there are the roughest on the planet, and penguin parents take it in turns to toddle two miles to the cliffs, hurl themselves into the maelstrom, and hunt for food to bring back to the chicks.

Then they have to make it back.

Many of them don’t.

The ones that do, are often bruised and bloodied and broken, because they get hurled against the rocks and smashed around. *

Talking to my 90-year-old Grandma on her birthday a couple of weeks ago, it struck me just how much has changed in the past 90-odd years.

Stuff like, not only were computers in mobile phones inconceivable, but the very concept of a modern computer was beyond people.

Grandma still had milk deliveries from a man with a horse and cart, and she’d see more horses on the roads than cars when she was a girl.

But one thing they did have a lot of were picture houses. Cinemas. Far more than today, because nobody had televisions in those days and people went to the pictures often.

Every Sunday evening, after chapel, as I found out my Grandma did.

Then she proceeded to tell me a story that made me laugh until tea came out of my nose... *

Scarecrow ideas for small businesses [new blog post] *
*
*

Waving a glass of wine, shrieking at nine men on a rope, and getting all tribal about our village?
Yep, that’s what Joe and I were doing last night.

It’s Community Week in our village and we were at one of the local farms drinking local wine (surprisingly good) and watching the inter-village tug of war contest. Our village won, naturally.

There was much gossip about what’s to become of the local pub, whose scarecrow is the best in the village scarecrow competition (ours, obviously — see the photo)…
…and general drinking and nattering.

I like my own company, and it takes me a long time to get to know someone, and I find public social gatherings a little scary — but when I do go, I always enjoy them.

Because there’s always something to learn and there’s always connections to make.

Social media is great, but actually talking to people face-to-face is incredibly valuable. You can’t beat it.

In your personal life and in your business.

Because running a successful business is all about making connections and building relationships — and it’s not enough to do it all online.

Pre-11am gin shout-out [new blog post]
*

Sometimes you help people in unexpected ways.

Take Sheena, for instance. I hadn't really considered how what I do might help people who don't even have a business yet... "Hi Vicky! Dropping you an email to say thanks for all of the awesome resources you provide to business owners and potential business owners and for the constant and regular encouragement.

I am a lurker in the Vicky Fraser world - I have read your book, completed the 49 ideas email series and I regularly listen to your podcasts, but I don't currently run a business and have a full time J.O.B. (which is a daily challenge, but not the good sort!). I initially ordered your book to help out my husbands fledgling business with marketing and promotion, but having read it and your email series I am now more specifically focused on starting my own business (which I have been toying with for a while) and using your ideas to build my marketing and productivity plans. (I did pass on the link to the book and the 49 ideas to my husband, however, and told him not to ignore the advice and suggestions!). I regularly receive your emails with the call to action to join the inner circle, which I think will be completely invaluable when I get to the point of needing to borrow your brain and share ideas with your superheroes. For now I am at the very (very) early stages of working out how I am going to go about this crazy change and your emails and podcasts are keeping me moving forwards, despite not having any copy to review, products to complete or website to create.

Keep doing what you are doing - your content is brilliant for non-business owners at the beginning of their journey as well as seasoned entrepreneurs. If I never manage to live the dream it will not be because I didn't have access to some truly inspiring material!

Cheers! (*gin clink on hold - it is not even 11am), Sheena" *

Pre-11am gin shout-out [new blog post] * * Sometimes you help people in unexpected ways. Small but perfectly formed [new blog post]
*** While everyone else is scrambling to get their product in front of as many people as possible, I’ve got a fresh idea for you.
Instead, let’s get it in front of as few people as possible.

Let’s find your smallest viable audience and show them exactly what they want, when they want it.

Then let’s turn as many of them them as possible into happy clients, as efficiently and effectively as possible.

And do you know what else?

Choose life [new blog post]
*
*
Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a big fucking telly. Choose a scraped together holiday once a year.

Choose grafting in a job you tolerate for 50 years until you retire.

Choose to start living then.

Or… don’t.

Choose something different.

Choose to live now.

Yeah, I know, many people who choose the usual path love their lives. And I’m happy for them. But this email isn’t about them.

This email is about the others.

The very many who just do life this way because that’s what you’re supposed to do.

You work so you don’t have to work anymore.

Who made those the goddam rules?

Not your average afternoon tea [new blog post]
*
*
A little extra effort on your part can create fanatically loyal customers, you know…

Take Coombe Abbey Hotel in Coventry.

We were there just last week for my amazing Grandma’s 90th birthday afternoon tea.

It was a proper good day: gifts and cards and silly balloons, followed by a ride in a limo (me and Grandma had never been in a limo before, so we had a blast) with champagne and Frank Sinatra, then afternoon tea at Coombe Abbey — a medieval stately home which is gorgeous.

The staff offered to decorate our table for us so we could get on with the serious business of having fun, and…

As we were tucking into our cakes and sipping our tea, the restaurant manager came over with a big smile on his face and presented a card and a little gift box to my Grandma, and wished her a happy birthday from everyone at Coombe Abbey.

Not ordered. Not expected.

Most welcome — Grandma was delighted, because it was a tiny thing to the hotel — a box of little truffles and a card — but the gesture was thoughtful.

Afternoon tea was delicious, but even if it hadn’t been as good as it was, the hotel’s little gift would have made sure I’d go back again.

Marketing lessons from Nigerian princes [new blog post]
*
*
Every now and then I get propositioned by a Nigerian prince.

He explains how his vast fortune is sitting somewhere just waiting for him to claim it, but he can’t! He’s displaced, and on the run, and needs my help.

If only I’ll give him my bank account details, he’ll transfer 10 million quid into it, and as a thank you, he’ll leave behind a million when he takes it out again.

What an amazing offer!

You can imagine I jumped at the chance… …to delete the email and give it no more thought at all.

Until the day I did give it some more thought.

Because these guys are super-smart. Do you think they’d go to all that trouble if it was a total waste of their time?

Let me tell you this: they wouldn’t, and it isn’t. “But who’d be so stupid and naive as to fall for a story like that?” I hear you ask.

Good question. (And don’t forget greedy — these people are appealing to greed.) Almost nobody will fall for a story like that… which is the point.

The scammers know most people will roll their eyes and delete. They want most people to do that.

If their message is too believable, they’ll hook too many people, and will lose them all later on when it comes to the scam.

But if they repel all but the most gullible people right at the start, the ones who are left are far more likely to give them money.

This is a numbers game to them. How much effort should they put in for how many people?

If you’re paying attention, you’ll know exactly how to apply this to your own marketing (and no, before anyone gets their knickers in a twist, I’m obviously not telling you to scam anyone ever).

Progress is made in tiny beetle steps [new blog post]
*
*
Twisted. Distorted. Deformed.

These are all synonyms of contortion, and they are my goals… in circus shenanigans and in life.

I’ve been working on my backbends in contortion class for what seems like forever.

And sometimes it feels like I’m making no progress at all.

So I take photographs (if you find me on Instagram @treefrogtoe you’ll be able to shake your head in bewilderment at me). Because our brains are tricksy things. They hoodwink us into believing we’re not getting anywhere useful, when in fact we are.

Progress is made in tiny beetle steps.

We do better and better in such tiny increments we don’t notice it, which is why I focus on progress, not results.

In backbends and in business.
In an effort to distort my business away from what everyone else is doing and towards what I want to do, I have to remind myself to focus on those tiny beetle steps and stop beating myself up for not being There yet.

And sometimes — yes — it feels like we’re going backwards...

Exposing my hairy ankles to the world [new blog post]
*
*
In defiance of the current trend of only showing your most perfect manicured and made-up face to the world, I’m going to expose my hairy ankles.

I’m calling bullshit on this gormagon of perfection that keeps us low.

Because underneath it all, quite often, we don’t have our shit together quite as much as it might seem that we do.

Underneath it all, sometimes we’re actually pretty confused and fed up.

And it’s exacerbated by all those lifestyle photos of biz guuuuurrrrrrruuuuuus living it up on the beach in some far-flung country where it costs 30p a day for a luxury villa.

Don’t get me wrong, that’s fine, and it looks like a fab way to live…

Except when they’re selling that lifestyle to you and me, and we live in the eye-wateringly expensive western world where a lux villa on the beach on the south coast will set you back a cool million quid or so (I checked), it’s disingenuous at best and dishonest at worst.

See, they’re not telling you the whole truth about how they got there, because while they might work an hour a day now I can pretty much guarantee you they didn’t get there by working an hour a day back then.

The net effect of this whole perfection confection is feelings of inadequacy, frustration, and dissatisfaction.

"Vicky knows her onions" [new blog post]
*
*
Well, this is a hell of an introduction…
“I discovered Vicky through a Linked In contact, we had a talky.io video call and Stuart said to me “Kyle, you should listen to Vicky Fraser, she knows exactly what you need”. Business for Superheroes Stuart said. I admit I was not sure on the domain, but I listened because Stuart had been there and done it. I signed up for the email series 49 idea. You all know that Vicky knows her onions, what I was reading everyday was awesome. I had already started to read about influence and psychology myself, this all seemed to be exactly the stuff I was enjoying.
“This marketing business all seems like a lot of fun I thought. Next I went to the podcasts and got listening, I love listening to audio books and podcasts. Started out with Stuff you should know, then the Infinite Monkey cage, Car Stuff, In our Time, Serial. What else is there to do when you are driving? Vicky stands out in her podcasts as much as her writing, this was different I thought. I am not sure what has happened yet and I am 5 minutes in, there is a lot of gin being drank and this amusing chap called Joe with a real dead pan wit. I stuck with it, the value was obvious. Not only are the podcasts full of the best information, they are genuine, I can imagine the Dingle with Vicky and Joe in the house together, that really brought it home that this is a person I can trust to help me with my business.”

It's Not What You Sell... [new blog post]
*
*
I’m dropping a little nugget of gold-dust for you this morning, straight from the fingertips of Tanya — one of my Superheroes: “I was initially drawn to Vicky as she lives in the village my Uncle used to live in (and I used to go and stay there as a kid!) and I liked her style re copywriting (it was refreshing to meet a UK person doing it well, as it seems most of the people I see online are US based). So…. moral of this is never second guess WHY someone might be attracted to do business with you…I bet Vicky would never have thought it would be those reasons Just put yourself out there, and be good at what you do…people will choose you for their own reasons!”
Do you know why your customers and clients choose you?
Because let me tell you something: it has actually very little to do with your product or service.
Sure, if your product or service is shit, people won’t come back for seconds…
But why they choose you in the first place?
It’s you.

Wisdom from Pink Leopard on a Mission
[new blog post]
*
*
I had an email from a Pink Leopard the other day. She’s reading my book and emailed me in response to a question I ask in it.

Why do you do what you do? What drives you? Here’s what she said: “Hi Vicky,

Started reading my (your) book and I’m loving it so far…and I got round to the “why” bit. I’m going to soak up and take on board all of your words of wisdom and number 1 was emailing you my why…so I’m doing it It’s something I think about a lot because sometimes I don’t think I’ve got it nailed. But I really want to ingrain it in to my brain and use it to motivate me every day. My initial why was to start my own business so I could work from home and be on my old schedule and that’s happened. And I’m loving it.

But also why I need something now to progress me further.” My Pink Leopard has nailed it: without really understanding why you do what you do, what drives you, you will always struggle to do what you need to do to succeed (whatever success looks like to you). I used to call it my “why”… Now I call it my Mission.

Sounds a bit goofy, I know, but it helps me.

My Mission is twofold, and I reckon yours should be too. A Mission that your business serves — mine is to help small business owners struggle less, thrive more, and enjoy their businesses and lives.

And a personal Mission — mine is to create a lifestyle that serves me and Joe, and gives us enough time to do the things we want to do for fun. (Of course there’s lots more detail in there that I’ll share another time… but rest assured it involves lots of time for circus shenanigans)

What’s your Mission? Is everything you do in your business serving that Mission and taking you closer to the life you want to live? *

Dodging the business poo [new blog post]
*
*
When you start achieving what you want, people start flinging poo at you.

Jill, one of my Superheroes, has taken what I teach and run with it from day 1. The second she joined my group, she did stuff.

Now she’s seeing the rewards… …and the poo.

She posted this in our private email group yesterday:
“Is being good at marketing a bad thing? So someone said to me today ‘…but you’re so good at marketing yourself…’ (btw I’m not, I just do what vicky tells me), like it was a bad thing. That I couldn’t be a good pilates teacher and be a good marketer at the same time?? “What’s that all about?? Anyone else have this? I’m just learning and reading and taking as much advise as I can from those who know – the same opportunities are open to everyone – it’s annoying! “Anyway, I’m taking heart from the great Dan Kennedy who says ‘the best people at business are those who are the best marketers’ – or something along those lines.” I think it happens to most business owners when they start to see results, and it’s usually born from envy.

You start out being superb at your Thing — pilates, in Jill’s case — then you have to get good at marketing your Thing.

Because you can be the best pilates teacher in the world, but if you’re crap at marketing yourself, nobody will ever know about you...

Pole-dancing chicken-farming copywriter kudos [new blog post]

In a couple of weeks, I’m giving a talk and doing a workshop at my mentor’s event.

Jon McCulloch, aka the Evil Bald Genius, asked me to come and talk about one of the things I do best: helping businesses be more fucking interesting.
I was pretty chuffed, because Jon’s well known as pretty much the highest-paid copywriter in Europe. He’s worked with multimillionaires to make them even more multi, he’s lauded by Dan Kennedy, and he’s sought-after by marketers whose names you’ll definitely recognise.

So you can imagine I was even more chuffed when his daily email landed in my MacBook the other day and it contained this…

Angry Marketer shouts at radio [blog post]
*** Do you ever shout at the radio?

Wouldn’t catch me doing that. Ahem.

But this morning, I was yelling YASSSSSSSSSSSSS! and punching the air as I listened to the BBC Inside Science podcast.

The presenter was interviewing the Angry Chef, who basically spends his life debunking all the bullshit diets the weight loss industry touts to unsuspecting and desperate people. These weight loss asshats make millions from their rubbish.

The Angry Chef said a lot of very sensible stuff, but one thing stuck out at me like disco tits at an accounting convention: “All these people selling their paleo diets and their gluten-free and dairy-free and processed-free stuff, they’re all so sure of themselves.” ***** Click the link in the bio to keep reading ☝☝☝#smallbusiness #marketing

Adjusted my Wacom stylus setting & I am loving the results 😬. Add to that a new font installed and I feel super-inspired 🎈
