Today on January 22nd 1506, the first regiment of 150 Swiss Guards arrive at the Vatican City to protect the pope.
The Pontifical Swiss Guard, or simply known as the Swiss Guard, are a small, but elite force of soldiers maintained by the Holy See. They are the de facto military unit of Vatican City with one simple mandate; to protect the Pope at all costs. Swiss Guards patrol the Apostolic Palace, which is the official residence of the Pope.
The Swiss Guard was originally established under Pope Julius II in 1506, making them one of the oldest operational military regiments in history. Decades before their official arrival, the Vatican had built a training barracks to oversee the development of potential Swiss mercenaries. The first contingent of 150 soldiers marched towards Rome under the command of Kaspar von Silenen. Pope Julius granted them the title of “Defenders of the Church’s Freedom”.
Since the early days, Swiss Guards have dressed in a very distinctive uniform. Their Renaissance attire consists of blue, red, orange, and yellow cloth with most soldiers still carrying the ceremonial halberd (a long pike). However, since the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II, they now carry more practical firearms for protecting their leader. Recruits are Swiss Catholic males that are typically between 19 and 30 years of age.

JESSICA JONES: CHAPTER 4
Jessica turned each corner until she found herself in a narrow alley, finally alone with the stranger. And yet when the man removed his overcoat, the detective learned she had just made a grave mistake. The man was clad in black from jacket to boot, a white skull sprayed across his bulletproof vest. This was not a man. This was the Grim Reaper—Death incarnate.
"Frank Castle, huh?” Jessica said, crossing her arms across her chest. “So what could the Punisher possibly want with me?”
"Been hunting down a mutant,” Castle said in a raspy voice. “Big hairy piece of shit. Asshole killed twelve in the last week. Shot him in the head, but the bastard sprang to life, blew up our base and sent my hacker to Metro-General." He seemed constantly on edge, his eyes wandering about. “So if you’ve heard of anything, if you find anything, I need you to let me know.” Castle pulled out a folded note and handed it over.
Jessica raised an eyebrow. “Okay, you lost me at sprang to life.”
Frank Castle seemed tired but resolute. The vigilante had a cut on his temple and another scratch on the bridge of his nose. “Look, the point is, I need to put this dog down for good.”
"Fine,” said the detective. “I’ll look around.”
Castle nodded, wheeled around and started to walk away.
"Have you…” Jessica found herself saying. She had to ask. “Have you seen him?”
The Punisher stopped on his tracks, but didn’t turn back to face her. “No. But I know he’s out there.” He resumed his pace but uttered before fading into the dark. “Red's too stubborn to die.”
