Despite their bad reputation and gross mouthparts (they spew out enzymes onto their meal then vacuum up the liquid), I think that flies are fantastic - hence why they are painted on this pinafore. They can pollinate; hoverflies are pro-pollinators and we have 27 species in the UK. They also are excellent pest controllers and can keep populations of aphids in check. Even pesky houseflies are effective scavengers, and their maggots are a vital source of protein for our British birds. I'm still trying to convince Nadia that flies are great - she isn't as keen.
