(NEW SERIES!) Studio shot of an old Chinese-language textbook for primary (elementary) level school pupils in Singapore, from the 1980s.
Made up essays accompanied with watercolor illustrations, the text incorporates hanyu pinyin to help readers identify the Chinese characters. New vocabulary is also highlighted at the bottom of every page.
The hand-drawn paintings are original artworks specially produced for this project. The watercolour medium brings out nuances within the subject's expression and character.
This is a work that, despite being created more than 30 years ago, retains its elegance and authenticity even to this day.
This page spread depicts the story recounting Alfred Nobel's discovery of dynamite. (To be continued ⏩⏩⏩) #designresearch#chineseart#calligraphyart#bookdesign#singaporeart#contemporarypainting#typographyart#teachersofig#艺术#sgartweek

Those fun sock illustrations were for this one of a kind projects. Patrick's Sock Drawer was the culmination of interviews with Patrick, surveys with his friends, and observation of Patrick's life. As a connoisseur of socks it was the highest honor for him to see his character portrayed in socks.
First exciting milestone of 2018: I’m happy to announce that I, along with @kevinzweerink have been given the opportunity to be designers-in-residence at Fikra Campus @fikradesigns for the next three months. What will be doing during that time, you ask? Hopefully something very interesting. Watch this space. #designresearch#designresidency#fikracampus

Japanese master craftsmanship research #3 .
The Japanese crafts Design follows a strict set of rules and codes(on a higher degree of craftsmanship), that are particularly hard to be understood on the west. First, the design of an object is strictly related to its use, such as this Sakura flower arrangement (detail), part of an under construction Flower observation set prepared for an important family.
After hand cutting the 0.5mm mother of pearl material with a needle shaped tool on this very complex design, the master craftsman will cover it all with black lacquer, to then, with a tiny piece of charcoal, peacefully sand these fragile pieces of northern lights until they shine again on the surface of the object .
