I’ll just be over here working on my S&M (Sit & Meditate) practice.
I’ll admit it. I’m pretty crap at meditation sometimes. My brain likes to race ahead and as soon as I manage to quieten myself, thoughts like ‘oh it’s working, I’m not thinking about.. Oh’, ‘Mmmm Donuts, I remember donuts’ or ‘What did Jesus have against white wine’.. Pop into my head.
Being able to sit and mediate, and not feel the pressure to NOT think, has been instrumental in me finding a place of peace in my practice. Usually I’ll listen to binaural beats or relaxing music and just let the thoughts drift through and process and if I catch myself getting caught up in then I’ll focus on my breath, or my heartbeat until it passes.
Over time it’s gotten a little easier, and I love group mediations and sound baths since for me it’s easier to let go when someone else is leading the experience.. If only because I don’t have to keep an eye on the time or have the expectation of the of my alarm going off..
Either way, I'm staying with the sometimes struggle of it. I’m all for working on anything that reduces stress, improves concentration, increases happiness and slows aging.. 🙌🏽

Meditation improves how you respond to stress and helps you to you feel calm and centered. However, not everyone finds it easy to meditate... especially if you're just getting started with a practice!
If you have a busy mind it might be difficult to quiet your thoughts and to focus inward. The irony is that if this is something you struggle with, it's exactly what you need!
While over the years I have learned to enjoy sitting still and meditating, one of my favourite ways to calm my mind has always been getting outside in nature. As I walk, I naturally breathe more fully as I deeply inhale all of the amazing scents in the air (especially in the fall!). My senses come alive and I'm rooted into the present moment by focusing on the beauty that is around me. My to-do lists momentarily disappear and I connect to just how amazing life is when I let go and BREATHE!
Mountain living combined with puppy parenting 🐶 now allows me to explore mountain trails on a daily basis, but when I lived in the city here are a few practices that got me out in nature as much as possible:
- Get outside for a walk and to enjoy your lunch at a city park on your lunch break. - When you get home from the office and change out of your work clothes, get outside for a walk before making dinner or settling in on the couch. - Use your weekends as an opportune time to head out to the mountains or forest... whether that be for a hike, to go snowshoeing (the snow will fly soon!) or to simply relax and take in the sights and smells.
Calming your mind and immersing yourself in nature decreases your stress, improves your sleep and boosts your happiness hormones! The mountains are calling and this doctors orders are for you to make a date with mother nature 🌿
