Mozart: The Late Symphonies by Leonard Bernstein, Wiener Philharmoniker #nowplaying #classicalmusic #deutschegrammophon‬
Frederic Chopin once wrote, “Bach is an astronomer, discovering the most marvelous stars. Beethoven challenges the universe. I only try to express the soul and the heart of man.” For all his modesty, Chopin was to have as profound an influence on the composers who succeeded him as the two masters from whom he drew such heavenly inspiration. This is especially clear on “Chopin Evocations,” pianist @daniil_trifonov’s new album on @dgclassics, which juxtaposes Chopin’s music with compositions that refract and react to his influence, including works by Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Mompou and Barber. The album doesn't come out until Friday, but you can hear tracks from it all this week on WQXR.

Trifonov has recorded Chopin a great deal — this album contains his third recording of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 since 2013 — but “Chopin Evocations” is as remarkable for its curatorial scope as it is for the assertive and resplendent playing that, while in ample supply here, also grace his earlier Chopin recordings.
Chopin was nothing if not moody, and Trifonov cleverly selects homages that channel his disparate emotional range. Where Schumann, Tchaikovsky and Grieg’s tributes evoke Chopin's propulsive, occasionally furious pianism, Barber and Mompou draw on his quiet, compassionate side, emphasizing slinky rubatos and elegantly oblique melodies.

Even Chopin himself doesn’t escape Trifonov’s curatorial gaze. Chopin was maligned (perhaps unfairly) for writing wooden orchestral accompaniments to his otherwise bravura concerti, which Trifonov attempts to rectify by opening each disc of the album with the debut of new, dynamic arrangements created and conducted by his mentor, Mikhail Pletnev. While the musicological appropriateness of Pletnev’s arrangement should certainly inspire debate, they are given a substantial leg up by Trifonov, whose clarity of tone and effortless virtuosity express Chopin at his best: probing the human heart and soul for the multitudes contained within.

‘If they cut off both hands, I will compose music anyway holding the pen in my teeth.’ Dmitri Shostakovich was one of the most gifted composers of the last century - and spent almost his entire life within a totalitarian system. It was left to him to bear witness to the corruption and cruelty of his age, and its many more subtle privations. Remarkably, he did so not through overt polemic but through satire, a sensitive choice of poetic references and a renewal of so-called 'absolute music' in his symphonies and his chamber music. #dimitrishostakovich #deutschegrammophon #rip #russian #composer #classicalmusic - #regrann

The origins of Requiem, the last of the great sacred compositions of Dvorak, dates back to the demand for a choral work to be dedicated to the Birmingham Music Festival: more than a real commission, to which the composer willingly acclaimed as a sign of gratitude for the warm welcome he had received in England during his numerous appearances as an author and conductor. Relations with this country had become tighter ever since the Stabat Mater was first performed; In addition to the commissioning of a Symphony (the Seventh in 70s), he attended performances at English choral festivals, first in Birmingham with the ballad 'The Spouse of the Spectrum' (1885), then in Leeds with the great oratory 'Santa Ludmilla' (1886). Just from Birmingham Dvorak had been asked for another Oratory to be included in the Festival of 1888, but the project had been postponed to a later occasion. Though intimately linked to the tradition of its own land, Bohemia and that of Austro-German instrumental culture, in which it had roots, Dvorak appreciated the English civilization in the flourishing activities of its choirs and its choral festivals, animated by associations of amateur enthusiasts and far from being obsolete in the technical and educational aspect. It is a well-known fact that this golden string, inaugurated by Händel and embellished in the nineteenth century by Mendelssohn's Speakers, has never been interrupted; but at that time, in Victorian England, it came back to light with particular fervor of initiatives: these however not to be entirely met by the creative vein of indigenous composers. Hence the focus on those composers who could reconcile different traditions. And among them Dvorak proved to be one of the best suited to combine cordiality of expression, fresh popular inspiration and wise dominance of the choreal-symphonic form in a context that also took into account the fundamental requirements of the environment to which it was addressed.

Had a sad day today...time to listen to some contemplating music from #maxrichter a german born composer who lives and work in the UK. He represents the new generation of contemporary composers without any limits. #soundtracks (i.e. #leftovers) #classicmusic and #experimentalmusic is his oeuvre. This music from Sleep is a flow of harmony and changing melodies played by a small chamber orchestra and Max Richter adds some electronic patterns to this. The music is written to sleep...better said to calm down, to relax. At first glance it appears like #chilloutmusic but the more you get into this music the more you start appreciating the inner beauty of it. In the liner notes the musicians state that it is much easier to play 16 note per bar rather than 1 note per bar, because this note has to be played with all the beauty which is possible and doable. I promise that after listening to this album you cannot get the melodies out of your head for a very long time! Give it a try! #classicalmusic #deutschegrammophon #contemporaryart #contemporarymusic

The long gestation of the Sixth Symphony by Sibelius has gone through different stages and continuous reflections. At first, as the first sketches of 1914 testify, Sibelius had also imagined it to be transformed into a "violin and orchestra" Concert. The doubts and difficulties encountered in the composition of this Symphony brought Sibelius to a moment of serious discomfort. Compared to the Fifth, which showed a clear Brucknerian impression and a triumphal tone, the Sixth appears almost diaphanous, transparent, however far from the wild and passionate characters that the composer had imagined in 1918.
Completed in 1924, Symphony no. Jean Sibelius's 7 is a superb and enigmatic page of music that brings with it the aura of concluding, or perhaps better, "definitive". Certainly concludes the operos and the original composer's most original symphony, which afterwards thought of dedicating himself to a possible Octave, unless he had destroyed the sketches shortly after they had been annotated; and that in the more than thirty that left him to live he wrote only one more piece for the orchestra, the Tapiola symphonic poem, something from the room, and something still for piano only, nothing more than symphonic. It certainly closes the circle of experimentation begun nearly twenty years earlier with Symphony no. 3 and continued in 1914 with Symphony no. 5: the attempt to combine more movements of the classical form into units of greater breath, which in the Third occurs in the concluding movement (where the traditional Scherzo and Finals are joined), in the Fifth in the initial movement (where the sonata form and Scherzo) and in the Seventh is definitely done, because the work is concentrated in a single impressive movement.

Max Richter- Taboo (Original Television Score)
Notable Tracks: Song of the Beyond, Nocturnal, Lamentation for a Lost Life.
Well it's certainly passable y'know. It's different from a lot of Richters more literary works with this having a strong percussion base, resulting in mounting feelings of urgency. It's good to see that Richter can do this kinda dark and moody music well, it's unfortunately not that interesting though. #maxrichter #taboo #originalscore#tv#tvmusic#filmmusic#studiorichter#deutschegrammophon #tomhardy#fx#bbc #berlin#modernclassical#classicalmusic#darkmusic#tense#brooding#fear#2017television#music2017#music2017#australianblogger#melbourneblogger#anaustralian

With the Brandenburg Concerts, the four orchestral suites - BWV 1066/69 - constitute, in the field of profane entertainment music, the result probably higher than those achieved by Bach during his stay in Köthen (between 1717 and 1723). In the Saxon town of Bach, Kapellmeister was occupied at the court of Prince Leopold, music-sensitive and inclined patrons, as well as most other German sovereigns, to make the life of his own court gloriously with a pomp openly inspired by the example of Versailles. This penetration of French taste on German soil, fertile transfusion of intellectual stimuli, found a realization of particular significance in the diffusion of instrumental dance music according to Lully's style. For a recreational and entertainment function, the kind of dances suite had found in Germany a coded structure in the sequence of four tracks: Allemanda, Current, Sarabanda, Giga. It is no coincidence, however, that all four Bachian suites - contemporaries as ouvertures, by metonymy from the first track of each of the compositions - systematically expel this consecrated succession from Allemanda, the German dance par excellence, and only occasionally welcome the three more dances; Most of the selected pieces consist of dances whose French matrix is obvious from simple names (bourrée, passepied, badinerie, réjouissance). In this, Bach's suites adhere perfectly to their function and to the aesthetics of time. However, the French model, assumed by the composer as a general anthology principle, is applied with a freedom of reworking, inventive fertility, and technical awareness that distinguish the four compositions from the conformism of exemplary contemporary production, and give each of them a specific profile.

#johannsebastianbach  #bach  #suite  #ouverture  #munchenerbachorchester  #karlrichter  #archivproduktion  #deutschegrammophon  #classique  #lovemusic  #classicalmusic  #classicalcomposer  #musicaclassica  #musique  #instaclassical  #instaclassic  #instamusic  #cd  #instaclassicalmusic  #instamusicaclassica

The three Piano Sonatas are Chopin's most constructive engagement, although it is not possible to categorize the music of this artist according to precise patterns and rules, which has left the mark of his original personality throughout his work, from the Nightmares to Ballads, Poles to Preludes, and Studies. The first Sonata in c minor op. 4 of 1828 never entered the repertoire of interpreters regularly, perhaps because it was more of a study essay than a successful and perfect composition in all its parts; the second Sonata in B flat minor op. 35 was written in Nohant, France, in 1839 and contains in the third time the funeral march, already made up in 1837 and inserted into this work as a central psychological moment around which everything else is articulated; the third Sonata in b minor op. 58 dates back to 1844 and is the largest of the three, plus a certain theatricality of conception. It is known that the Sonata op. 35 has always raised discordant opinions even with musicians who have never hidden their admiration for Chopin, such as Schumann and Mendelssohn. When the Sonata was released, Schumann reviewed it and admitted that the song contained many beauties. The Sonata op. 58 has a distinct lyrical character, although there are no dramatic tones, with those passing gradients from the strong to the floor and vice versa, which give impetus and vitality to composition, according to Chopin's taste and aesthetic choices. In this case too, the so-called 'Tempo rubato' is widely used and applied, which was sharply analyzed by Liszt, the most authoritative witness to Chopin's own interpretations of his pianist music.

The last work, excluding the scenes for Rosamunde, was Fierrabras, composed in a few months between May and October 1823, on a book by Josef Kupelwieser, brother of a dear friend of Schubert, the painter Leopold; as secretary of the Court Theater in Carinthia's Gate in Vienna, he was assured of his performance, but his resignation and the modest success of Weber's 'Euryanthe' in Germany, prompted Barbaja to delay and then cancel the work of Schubert: and Fierrabras was still a disappointment in his theatrical vocation. A performance in the form of concert was only in Vienna in 1858, and for the 'first' of the opera one had to wait for 1897, the first centenary of Schubert's birth. The booklet, set in France at the time of Wars with the Moors, is inspired by a French text of the twelfth century, La Chanson de Fierrabras, and tells the clash between Charles and King Boland, who has plagued relics in Rome, and his son Fierrabras, who will convert to Christianity. The result is not very happy: modest and emphatic verses, a complicated and unlikely intrigue, with continuous movements of the places of action; Characters dashed in an elementary way, with sudden and unjustified reactions; and although the booklet confirms the preference for chivalrous and medieval subjects who will be dear to German 'national' work, the dramaturgy of this work is not very romantic, and looks rather to the composite models, to the conventional human type of theater seriously pinkish. Formally, Schubert takes a mid-way solution between the Italian tradition and the Singspiel: spoken, but recitative and Melodramen (orchestral accompaniment), Italian arias, many Lieders and ballads, frequently linked by their ensembles thanks to continuous choral works; linear singing style, alien to the 'belcanto' flourished; classical orchestra (but with trombones) with a particular taste for wood solo works and some 'exotic' styles to characterize the moons.

Evgeny Kissin releases Beethoven album to launch new exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon after 25 years “It has been clear for some time that Evgeny Kissin is a Beethoven player of rare pedigree and distinction, the finest Russian-born Beethovenian since Emil Gilels,” Gramophone
Any history of the great pianists would be incomplete without a chapter devoted to Evgeny Kissin. The 45-year-old artist is blessed with the rare qualities required to enter the pantheon of piano legends. A recent recital at London’s Barbican Centre inspired the Telegraph to describe his playing as “miraculous”, while the New York Times wrote of the pianist’s “blend of technical mastery and eloquent artistry” following a spellbinding performance at Carnegie Hall.
After a break of twenty-five years, the pianist has signed a new exclusive contract with the yellow label. Kissin’s discography already contains landmark recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, critically acclaimed collaborations with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado among them, and the association between artist and label resumes with the release of a Beethoven album in August. The double-disc set, its programme personally chosen by Kissin from recitals given over the past decade, includes Piano Sonatas No. 14 Op.
