This cold and rainy weather in Austin today has me thinking about cold, rainy camping adventures. Often people shy away from camping or backpacking in this weather but don't let it stop you! •
My top tips for cold, rainy camping are:
- have a synthetic sleeping bag to minimize condensation - line the inside of your backpack with a trash at and stuff your tent in between the trash bag and backpack so you keep everything else dry
- always have a couple dry socks stored away in your sleeping bag so you have dry feet at night
- buy a waterproof glove lining for your hands - have an inflatable sleeping bad to keep you off the wet ground - sleep in the middle of your tent so you don't get wet from the sides
- wear gaiters to cover your boots to prevent them from getting wet - have a blister care kit ready.
What are some of your best practices for cold, rainy camping ?
Wrote a little bit about the science behind our brains on nature. I thought this picture from my solo trip to Alaska where I spent days completely unplugged from technology was fitting ! Link in profile!
One of the most rewarding experiences I've had this year was leading this group on top of a mountain in Northern Washington. This day was my most challenging day yet as an outdoor guide, with some challenging terrain that I had not yet experienced with other people. We covered snow, sliding rocks and steep edges. I did this as part of a further education course with @nolsedu in order to hone my outdoor leading skills. Needless to say I am so grateful and humbled by other outdoor adventurers who believe in the power of leading and hiking together. Special thanks to @audrajung and @socirincione for being the most badass outdoor female leaders I know and pushing me to be a better guide!
How to be a dirt bag biker:
Step 1 - take your bike apart and throw it in a hockey bag to bring it on the plane. Still not sure how that worked out.
On another note - anyone have beta for bringing wheels as a carry on? Stoked for @thisisroam in 1 day. #dirtbagchallenge#winning @thekonasupremes
