Before Watchmen: Ozymandias • #SuperheroSaturday • #AdrianVeidt is the (self-proclaimed) smartest #man in the #world &, in #BeforeWatchmen : #Ozymandias , we see the steps he took to prevent himself from becoming, “the smartest man on the cinder.” • I’m just going to say, right off the bat, that this story is *incredible.* Of all of the entries, this is probably my #favorite - perhaps even more so than BW: #DoctorManhattan . There’s so much of Adrian we never got the chance to learn about during the original series’ run, & this story finally gives us much needed insight on the enigmatic #character . • One of the (many) reasons I enjoyed this #story so much was because it covered his story in a completely linear fashion. In fact, it was Adrian himself telling the story in the form of his own Journal - explaining his #childhood , his #travels around the #world , his rise to corporate #power , & exactly how he came to adopt his alter-ego, Ozymandias. • I also really liked the fact that I could see elements of many of the other characters “BW” stories sprinkled into this tale. Moments from a few of the previous entries were retold from Adrian’s perspective - especially those in regard to Dr. M’s story, as the two ultimately have one of the most important relationships in the series. • Speaking of relationships, I found it interesting that many of Adrians motivations & decisions were directly correlated to the relationships in his life; whether it be familial or romantic. • To be honest, everything about this story is pretty damn incredible. In fact, my only gripe is with the #artwork , & even that has a unique purpose. There’s something about the art that feels pompous and arrogant; like Adrian himself illustrated each panel - depicting himself like a God, & others (specifically those he didn’t respect) as subhuman. • One more thing, I never noticed just how much Veidt reminded me of #DoctorDoom in terms of his ideology & self perception. I *really* liked that. • Of the six titular heroes’ prequel stories, BW: Ozymandias is perhaps the greatest entry in the series, & is a must read for fans of the Watchmen. • My rating: 10/10 • And now back to your regularly scheduled feed!
Before Watchmen: Rorschach • #SuperheroSunday • When I first heard of the “#BeforeWatchmen ” series, years ago, I was skeptical. I worried that it would ruin the source material by offering cheap origin #stories for some of my most beloved #Watchmen characters, & for that reason I avoided them all together. However, with the advent of #DoomsdayClock in full effect, I decided to take a chance & give them a chance. While the first entry I read, “Before Watchmen: #DoctorManhattan ,” was #brilliant , this #story , unfortunately, has proven I was right in being weary. • Having #read Dr. M’s prequel first, it’s difficult not to compare the two in terms of overall quality. I honestly would have thought that telling the story of #Rorschach would have been a relatively easy endeavor, but apparently that’s not the case. It’s not as though I feel #author#BrianAzzarello is bad, but this story just feels incredibly uninspired. The characters, the motives - even the artwork - all of it feels very dull. There’s nothing about it that makes it stand out as something unique, or even worthwhile. • Even the overarching threat that was mentioned at the start of every chapter didn’t have a very satisfying conclusion. However, after spending some time thinking about it, I wonder if that was the point. Perhaps it’s supposed to show that Rorschach isn’t the tactician or #detective that we’re familiar with characters such as #Batman or #TheQuestion ; to show us that, unlike them, Rorschach is an unwieldy beast - just a reactive force to the issues in his city, as opposed to one that tries to consider any preventative options. Basically, he lacks foresight. In that regard, the story could be New interesting - but even still, I can’t be sure that was the intention, & even if it was, the way in which it was done was lackluster at best. • With its bland story & uninteresting characters, this story leaves a lot to be desired. In short, I really expected more. Perhaps Rorschach is just one of those characters that is better used sparingly - sometimes less really is more. • My rating: 5/10 • And now back to your regularly scheduled feed!
Before Watchmen: Doctor Manhattan • #SuperheroSaturday • As it’s name implies, the “#BeforeWatchmen ” series provides readers with insight on the life of their favorite #Watchmen characters prior to their joining the #team . These four issues focus on the life of #JonOstermman /#DoctorManhattan . • While Dr. M’s was the first #story I read in the series, I decided to hold off on #writing about it until after after I had #read the stories of at least two other characters. I did this because I imagined that this story - due to it revolving around a man who sees time in such a *unique* way - would be structured differently than the others, & I was correct in that assumption. This story doesn’t *just* focus on Dr. M’s #life prior to his time with the Watchmen, but instead presents us with the past, the present, & the future - not to mention the #multiuverse - all at once. In short, it gets pretty #wild - which was just fine by me. • I want to start by saying this story is absolute #SciFi#Nirvanna . If you’re intrigued by concepts such as the #Multiverse & #TimeTravel , or love #ThoughtExperiments such as the #SchrödingersCat#Paradox , then this story is for you. It’s so steeped in theoretical sciences that it may end up teaching you a thing or two. Familiar with #QuantumMechanics ? Well, you will be after reading this. • I would normally take this time to interject any qualms I had with the story, but I honestly can’t think of any glaring issues. Everything is practically solid. I will say that there was at least one moment of inconsistency in this story in comparison to the original Watchmen, but it didn’t actually detract from the story at all. #JMichaelStraczynski understands this character - so much that I might have though it was #AlanMoore , himself, penning the #tale . I also want to give special praise to artist #AdamHughes in regard to some of the creative liberties he took - especially in the final chapter. Honestly amazing. • This “prequel” to the Watchmen is not only a Sci-Fi #Nerd ’s dream, but it’s also a very emotionally engaging experience that, much like #Watchmen , I recommend anyone read. • My rating: 10/10 • And now back to your regularly scheduled feed!
WHY I Don’t Understand Doctor Manhattan as the Antagonist in Doomsday Clock! • #TheoryThursday • The following contains SPOILERS for #Watchmen (1986), #BeforeWatchmen : #DoctorManhattan (2012), & #DoomsdayClock (2017) • So, by now we all know Dr. M plays a very significant role in #DC ’s new #DoomsdayClock event. While I’m all for more #comics about the Watchmen, I can’t help but have a sinking feeling about the idea of Dr. M being the villain of this series. While he hasn’t been depicted as such - or even been seen - yet, in my research (i.e. reading some comics) I’ve found that it’s heavily implied that he will be the central threat of the story. • Dr. M was always depicted as a #God in the Watchmen, but if he is found to be the creator of the #DCU , then that would mean that he is, in fact, an *actual* God - & by the looks of it, he’s got an #OldTestament style of judgment. The reason I take such an issue with that is because of the #BeforeWatchmen series, which showed a brief glimpse of what occured after he left #Earth at the end of the original Watchmen. In it, we see just how excited he was as he “opened the box” on a new world - claiming, “perhaps we will become something amazing, together. I would like that very much.” • What could have possibly happened that would have caused him to shift his view & want to destroy the universe he created? Is his universe (the DCU) not to his liking? Is the DCU so bad that it deserves to be wiped from existence? Or, is he still indifferent to life, & simply no longer cares whether it thrives or dies? • Who knows, maybe the being wrecking havoc on the DCU isn’t even the Dr. M. we know; as Adrian implied in D-Clock, “Jon may have wanted to start over with a new identity. A second chance [at] saving a world.” I suppose only time will tell. • At the end of the day, all of this is just speculation. With only two issues published, there’s no telling where the story will go from here. And, while I am skeptical about this aspect of the plot, I have faith that #GeoffJonhs will find a way to have it all make sense, “in the end.” • Let me know your thoughts on the matter in comments! • And now, back to your regularly scheduled feed!
doctor manhattan has a soft spot for unborn babies I guess lmao. am I the only one not LOVING doomsday clock? geoff johns has been nailing all the characters but I don't feel invested. like am I supposed to care about batman meeting fake rorschach?? and that's another thing, who's idea was it to make the sequel to the greatest graphic novel ever, (a story known for the fact that it exists in it's own universe) take place in the DCU? I get it's cool too these characters crossover but it's distracting and seems like a cheap gimmick. let me know your thoughts tho
One of the most awesome news was that HBO (@hbo) ordered a show based of one of the most important comics of all time: Watchmen ☺. This new show is in charge of Damon Lindelof (@damonlindelof), responsable for Lost 🌴 and The Leftovers ✝. The comic itself, created by writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons and colorist John Higgins is one of the most admired in all of the DC Comics (@dccomics) library, and it couldn't have found a better home in HBO and for one of the most creative minds in the current entertainment world 😄👌. I can't wait to see who will play Owlman, Silk Spectre, Doctor Manhattan, Ozymandias, The Comedian and, most importantly, Rorshach. Watchmen doesn't have a premiere date yet, so we'll have to be on the lookout 😋.
Doomsday Clock: Issue #2 (Full Review) • Just read the new issue a just HAD to share my thoughts! • As the #DoomsdayClock strikes midnight in the #Watchmen universe, we see the #NewWatchmen leave their own universe, “for one less complicated.” Upon their arrival they immediately continue the search for Doctor Manhattan by seeking out the help of the two smartest men in the DCU! • For as many answers as this issue provided, it prompted a plethora of new ones in its wake - & I’m incredibly excited to find out the answers in the coming months. #GeoffJohns is doing an excellent job - as usual - creating a story that carries elements of what we’re used to from the DCU, but also paying respect to the familiar characters from #AlanMoore ’s Watchmen with dumbing them down. I also give credit to illustrator #GaryFrank for his artwork which is reminiscent of #DaveGibbons work, but with a modernized edge to it. • SPOILERS FOLLOW • We saw a couple of familiar faces this time around in regard to the Watchmen. From the flashback with Doctor Manhattan, to the gun-toting, #REBIRTH of everyone’s (second) favorite jester. Much like everyone else, I can’t help but wonder what a.) The Comedian is doing alive, but also b.) how he got to the DCU? Unlike our wayward #Multiverse travelers, he wasn’t aboard #Archie when they made the jump, so it’s begs the question.. how’d he get there? Also, there was a mention of #NiteOwl & #SilkSpectre - who, apparently, are still together seven years later. Go figure. • My only real issue with this story is the fact that, since I haven’t been reading the new Rebirth comics, I’m a bit out of the loop in terms of what the current climate of the DCU is - apparently everyone is against #Batman ? I’m not sure if this is fallout from the #DarkKnightsMetal storyline, or if it’s some other reason. • I want to add that #Rorschach ’s & #Ozymandias ’s psychoanalysis of #Batman & #LexLuthor , respectively, was VERY interesting. • There’s so much more I want to say, but that’s all for now! I can’t wait to see where it goes from here! • My rating: 10/10. • More new posts coming in 2018! • And now back to your regularly scheduled feed!
