Skógafoss, the stunning, staggering visual treat of a waterfall in Southern Iceland.
Located at the Skógar village, this waterfall is fed by two glaciers, Eyjafjallajokul (prer-nun-see-eye-shun: aye-yeah-fya-tah-yoke-thil....or just E15 [eee-fifteen] if your tongue's struggling to keep up) and Myrdalsjokull (myr-dulls-yoke-thil). .
The force of the Skogafoss causes a continuous spray when it hits the ground, often creating a rainbow when the sun is out (notice it in the middle of the picture?) .
Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are frequent in Iceland. The cliffs of the waterfall were formerly sea cliffs, and I believe the sea's receded now by a few kilometres south. In our world where our coastlines are are constantly being threatened by rising sea levels, it's interesting to note that the landmass of Iceland is feeding off the earth's belly (where do you think the volcanic lava came from?), and constantly shaping up and perhaps growing in size owing to all the tremors and eruptions.
E15 may be atleast a distantly familiar name if you were ever stranded at an airport because of a volcanic eruption in 2010 which momentarily brought many airliners to a screeching halt. I mean who would ever believe that the E15 is actually a volcano which lies under a perenial ice cap?!?! I was curious if the E15 eruption was the worst Iceland had seen in recent times. The response I got from an Icelander was: ''yeah, that's what the world thinks. But the eruption in Grimsvötn (another volcano which erupted in 2011) was much more grave and intense for us Icelanders. Sadly, it didn't catch the attention of the international media because their flights were not disrupted, you see!'' Apparently the wind direction during the Grimsvötn eruption caused the smoke and ashes to be restricted to the Arctic region unlike what happened when the E15 erupted. Thus, the mightier Grimsvötn eruption quietly sank into obscurity without making a whimper in the international media. .
