Lumpy lumpy 🦀 cake.  I only eat shellfish in months that have a 'r' in it, so season ends in April for me!  I love eating what's in season, although I've been missing summer tomatoes and fruit. At least in season greens are so good right now!  What seasonal food are you enjoying right now? .

This is my weekly food shop. I’ll probably go down to the green grocery mid week to get more veg. I’m proud to say nothing processed here except the choc hazelnut spread I bought as a treat for my son. Swipe for pic of ingredients list; I find it pretty decent. I could easily make it myself but the current heat and humidity are taking away my will to do anything 😆

If you’re somewhere warm, enjoy this for me and tag your creations #eatcomplete. Best part about brain food? It’s delicious. 
Recipe

1/3 cup hazelnuts
1/4 cup extra-­virgin olive oil
Juice and finely grated zest of 1 lemon
2 tablespoons plain kefir
1 teaspoon honey
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 pound salad greens, such as mesclun, baby kale, or spinach
4 carrots, peeled and thinly sliced
2 cups radishes, trimmed and thinly sliced
1 pint berries such as raspberries or blueberries

PREPARATION

Preheat the oven or toaster oven to 350°F.
Spread out the hazelnuts in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet. Toast in the oven until the skins split and the nuts turn a deep golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. While still hot, rub the hazelnuts in a clean kitchen towel to remove the skins (some bits of skin will remain). Cool for 5 minutes, then chop.

Combine the oil, lemon zest and lemon juice, kefir, honey, salt, and pepper in a small bowl and whisk until smooth. 
Divide the salad greens among four plates. Top with the carrots, radishes, and berries and drizzle with the dressing. Garnish with the chopped hazelnuts and serve immediately.

Our superfood month continues with chia seeds! Chia seeds are not new to the superfood scene, but there's cause for the lasting craze! They are the tiny black seeds from the salvia hispanica plant, originally grown in Mexico and South America. Chia seeds are generally flavorless, but will expand and gel when soaked in a liquid. Our superfood month continues with chia seeds! Chia seeds are not new to the superfood scene, but there's cause for the lasting craze! They are the tiny black seeds from the salvia hispanica plant, originally grown in Mexico and South America. Chia seeds are generally flavorless, but will expand and gel when soaked in a liquid. Mirin glazed carrots and crispy tofu with miso sprout rice from my @riverford recipe box - the sprouts are in there, they’re just hiding! Although my eating has been a lot better recently I still have days when I wish someone would wave a magic wand and I would miraculously have the perfect body whilst being able to eat whatever I wanted in whatever quantities - it’s not going to happen.....ever! So I guess I just need to remind myself that today I did really well and, more importantly, not only did I enjoy what I ate I also didn’t feel deprived. Kale is in season! Not a fan? Try this recipe, seriously. Drop a piece or two of chopped bacon in a pan, cook, add shallot and garlic, then some balsamic vinegar to taste. Toss in kale until desired tenderness (I usually turn off the heat at this point and just slightly wilt the leaves). Top with pomegranate and goat cheese for some extra deliciousness! We had this for dinner Monday with venison tenderloin and pierogis, and I just made extra for the week. These fresh spring rolls with spicy tofu and spicy noodles are a serious dose of YUM 🌶🔥🌶 Vegan, gluten free and loaded with in-season, local vegetables that are all grown by my go-to farm @cropthornefarm in Ladner, BC.  So much love for what the ladies at Cropthorne do to nourish us all year round

It may seem impossible to eat local and seasonally here in the dead of winter - especially because the grocery stores are stocking produce from far, far away ✈️
But a visit to the farmers markets in Vancouver (@vanmarkets) reveals a different story.  Farmers grow a stunning array of storage crops and many last until March or even April (and all of it goes well with hot sauce 😉)
Kale, carrots, watermelon radish, purple daikon, onion, cabbage and harukei turnips are ALL in these rolls with the addition of spicy rice noodles and crispy 'n spicy tofu (thank you Habanero Original 🙌🏽)
Summer eating is so easy to get right and delicious that I find WAY more satisfaction in coming up with something local and tasty at this time of year. Since we only pour one malbec by the glass at Flight, we decided to go with a natural one from Fabien Jouves. Locally in Cahors, which is in the south west of France, they call the grape Cot. The winemaker is from an old farming family in Causse and is fairly new to the practice of wine making. Fabien created his first cuvée Mas del Périé on the highest slopes of Cahors, in 2006.

In this region, malbec is the king of grape varietals. Located between Quercy and Cahors, Fabien wanted to choose parcels that could help him show a diverse range of malbec expressions. Biodynamic agriculture adds strength to his terroir by supporting the whole environment from the vines to the animals. The vinification process occurs naturally and without any additives. Last night’s supper included something neither of us had eaten in a salad before (how often can you say that - and it’s a good thing?!). The new addition was our allotment-grown oca. And it was a tasty contribution, adding texture, flavour and colour.

I would say the texture is similar to water chestnuts while the flavour is slightly like lemon. .
Personally, I prefer them cooked. If I was down to my last handful of oca, I would probably roast or boil them. I like the starchiness that the cooking gives them. I also think that cooking brings out the flavour more. Even so, they’re well worth trying raw.

Cleaning out the pantry resulted in a lentil, bulgar, and quinoa “chili”. Smokey kielbasa from @Olympia provisions added depth to the meal. 🍺: @pikebrewing Hopped Honey Ale cleansed our palates. The libation added a twang of sweetness to the earthy meal.

Sunday when my husband and I were chatting about going on vacation (yay!) I threw 2 chicken breasts in a pot of water for ~10 mins. I then threw them into my stand mixer to shred them. Easy peasy. I keep it in the fridge plain, add whatever sauces to a portion (pesto, tomato, bbq) and add it to whatever dish I want. .

So when I came home tonight do you know what I had to do? Chop and roast my veggies, and add pesto to my chicken. That's it. DONE.

Anyway...grocery shopping in Japan was an adventure. Especially when we first moved there. One thing that surprised me was that strawberries 🍓 were in season in January. My Minnesotan brain couldn't quite grasp that at first. Here, fresh berries are a summer treat!
